summary: Viper can’t let shit go.
note: Jess is evil now. Sorry kids.
Raindrops pattered against the pavement. Jessica tipped her head back and sighed up at the sky curtained by night clouds. She didn’t mind the rain--it was mildly refreshing. Arms extended, she dove off the Empire State building, looking more like a red flashing bullet as she picked up velocity.
A trip to the movie theatres appealed to her tonight, but Nick was busy and her teammates were, presumably, off carrying on their own plans. That was fine. Maybe she’d go anyway. Just like that, Jessica shot upward and took flight, cutting through incoming rainfall.
A few minutes snowballed into a few hours and as Jessica glided through dangling construction poles and swung off the thin pinnacles of buildings, she wondered if there were any last minute showings still available. Rounding to the nearest stopping point--a passageway too narrow for cars or even mopeds to get through--Jessica landed and switched into a set of clothes she had hidden there.
It beat going back and forth to the Tower sometimes.
Zipping up her black leather jacket, Jessica sauntered down the alleyway. She lifted her collar to keep her neck dry. At quite a distance behind her, she heard a sound--rustling movement--and she turned her head to speculate it. Who knew that one thoughtless move would be her biggest mistake tonight.
Somebody did.
“What--” The Avenger snapped her hand to the spot on her neck vulnerable to the feathered dart that pierced through it. She pulled it out and held it up to her grimacing face.
10...9...8...
Overcome by vertigo, Jessica reached for the wall. The strength in her legs waned, those limbs tangling one over the other until they could barely support her and she fell over, clawing the brick in desperate attempt to keep herself together.
7...6...5...
Fuck.

It couldn’t have been anything but the ferocious will of this woman that kept her fighting for just a few seconds longer; kept her heartbeat from tapping out. It’s over, done, give up. Body sprawled over hard wet grime, Jessica stared blank at the sky, fists uncurling at the whims of defeat. Raindrops pit-pit-pattered across her cheeks. She didn’t mind the rain. It was...it was...mildly...

“Sleep well?”
A shadowy figure emerged from the corner and slithered closer; stirred, Jessica turned her head in its direction, eyes clouded by grogginess, wondering what fucked up hospital she was in now. Nuh-uh, but this was no hospital. Not even a loony bin, or a prison. Swirl them all together, and out came this piece of shit place. This was corruption. Hell.
This was home, once.
Her face paled with revulsion and her vision became clearer, collecting bits and pieces to put the silhouette into focus. A pair of tar-colored lips grinned down at her. Jessica felt like she might vomit.
“You’ve got to be fucking kidding me.”
Laughter. “Surprised? I know, I know. Not that I blame you. You’re probably wondering, ‘What on God’s green earth is Viper doing with me now?’, right? ‘Didn’t she try to kill me? Twice?’ Well. Yes. But.” Dragging her tongue over the front of her teeth, Viper’s eyes wandered up to the ceiling, fingers drumming thoughtfully across her lips. “That was a mistake. A lapse of judgment, if you will. I was in a terrible mood all year, now that I think of it. Mm...yes. I took it out on you and I’m so sorry -- from the bottom of my heart.”
Back turned, Viper glanced over her shoulder, pouting, a thick curtain of dark green hair cast over the marred half of her face. “It would have been outrageous of me to destroy something so valuable. And--you know? Maybe I was a little jealous too. Do you like my boots?” She plunged the sharp heel just inches from Jessica’s face on the table, fingers gliding up those tight leather thigh-highs. “I know you’re a fan.” With a wink, Viper lowered her foot to the ground and began to pace.
“I guess I just couldn’t get over the fact that you’d gone to SHIELD. Not that I was surprised, that Nick Fury just--he just couldn’t wait to sweep you up for his own agenda, could he? Always taking things that don’t belong to him...” She ground contempt past her lips. “Tsk, tsk, tsk. And you’re involved with him now, that’s interesting. Actually, it’s...it’s quite perfect.” A devilish glint flickered in her eyes.
“Go near him and I will rip you to fucking shreds. Gladly."
She gasped. “You’d do that? For Fury? Don’t tell me you actually care for him? Love him, even? Jessie. This’ll turn out even better than I thought! And I bet you care for those Avengers too, don’t you? How are they, by they way? Iron Man? The Captain? Beautiful, beautiful.”
Jaw clenched, Jessica remained stretched out on the table, blood boiling. This bitch, this fucking crazy bitch, she would kill her, honest to god, she would...
“You guys are quite the little unit, aren’t you? It’s cute, really. But no matter how close you get to them, you know that, well...they’ll never be your family. Right?” Viper’s voice softened and she shook her head, frowning. “No, Jessie. We’re your family. HYDRA. I think you’ve forgotten that. We know who you really are, who you’re meant to be. We made you. Vermis was on the right track with you, honey, and we’re here to turn you back into the agent we all adore. Just think of all the fun we’ll have together. What do you say?”
“Go fuck yourself.”
Viper sighed. “We have got to redirect this hostility.”
“Redirect this.”
Jessica jutted her leg over her head, the agent standing behind her taking a crushing blow to the face with her foot. She threw her other leg over and with her hands sprung off the table to swing an angry fist into the jaw of an incoming agent, and then another. And another.
Crack. Snap. Pow.
She thrust her knee into a set of ribs, shattered them; she turned around with a biting grip on the agent’s arm, lifted him over her shoulder and hammered him into the ground. Panting, the Avenger swiped blood trickling from the corner of her mouth, eyes glowing viciously toward her perpetrator. Blood drained from her knuckles, she tightened them and charged after her.
Spider-Woman would have her head.
An agent who could have been a bodyguard caught Jessica by the throat and slammed her into the wall. Three times.
Thrown back on the table, Jessica curled up, gasping for air until she was pinned down by the neck again at Viper’s request. Jessica’s fingers twitched violently. Her windpipe was blocked. The agent was enjoying this entirely too much.
Viper sauntered around the table, the surface grazed by her fingertips. “Was that necessary?” She paused beside Jessica’s head and crouched low enough so that her face was level with hers. “Hm?” When Jessica’s eyes began to roll to the back of her head, Viper gestured for the agent to loosen his grip. But just a little. Lips shaped by a poisonous smile, Viper had her chin propped up on a closed hand while the other swept collective wisps of hair from Jessica’s face.
“I greatly admire your spirit. We all do. Isn’t that right?” Viper looked between her handful of agents, all of them unconscious but the one. Sighing contently, she patted Jessica’s cheek. “You have no idea how much this thrills me.”
Standing up, Viper swerved her attention long enough to regard the man pushing through the steel door. “Doctor.” Wearing a toothy grin, Viper clapped her hands together, nearly bouncing on her toes when he held something up between his thumb and index finger. Jessica only caught pieces of this weird exchange and began her struggle again, writhing against the table, pounding her fists and clawing into the agent’s hand.
Viper whipped back around and pulled a loaded syringe out of her pocket.
“Relax,” Malice clouded her eyes, and there was something much more sinister about her smile this time. Viper perched herself up on the table, legs crossed at her thighs. The Avenger growled. The agent gripped her tighter.
“Don’t be like that." She frowned, stroking the side of her face. The agent backed off to watch. "You won't even feel it." Sure, okay, as she stabbed the needle into her neck. Viper’s grin sadistically grew. “A little something to knock the edge off.”
Jessica’s body lurched forward and fell back again by the force of Viper’s hand. Her nose flared desperately for air, mouth sealed shut, refusing to give this psycho the satisfaction of seeing her cry out in pain. Nothing less than defiance shouted in her eyes, even as stupor began to erode her senses all over again. This bitch be damned. Proving her devotion to rebel, Jessica mustered up the power to mar Viper’s face with a backhanded slap.
“Like I said--” Viper chuckled darkly, soothing her reddened cheek as she watched her new puppet’s consciousness dissolve with delight, “I admire your spirit. We’re all very...very happy to have you again.” Before the doctor in white strode closer with his tray or surgical instruments, Viper brought her lips down to Jessica’s ear. “Sweet dreams, Arachne,” she lilted in a whisper.
“Welcome back.”
