You can hate me, until you pay me. Characters: Pete, Kitty Setting: S.H.I.E.L.D Content: Swearing and bitterness with a hint of girlish charm Summary: Pete doesn't know the meaning of a day off and goes into the office to write a report, be a bastard, smoke in his office and avoid Kitty. Or so he thinks.
It had been almost two weeks since he had returned and he was still adjusting to life in America. Although one could argue he was still adjusting from the first time he moved to New York. The sounds, the smells, the obnoxious accents irritated him, which was easier to do these days. South America had changed him a little and he was constantly on edge. It didn't help that he knew he was in close proximity to her. He would be lying if he denied thinking about her, it was just one of those things that happened. He had grown accustomed to it, although it slightly more unnerving knowing he was working in the same organization as her. When he walked around the building, he was careful to avoid anywhere she might be, even going so far as to jump into a closet when he thought he heard her voice. It had been a long time since the talked and he wasn't sure he wanted their first conversation to be under the watchful eye of Fury.
It was because of Fury that Pete had come into the office on a dreary Sunday afternoon. The report he had promised the one armed, one eyed pain in the ass pirate was late and it had to be in tomorrow. Or else. And while Pete would welcome 'Or else', he knew the full report was needed. It was moments like these that he longed for the days of wet work. Sure he had to kill people, but it was less paperwork for him, that was something that someone else took care of. After hours of staring at a blank page on his typewriter he decided it was time for tea and he slipped out of his office and headed toward the break room. His footsteps echoed as he lit a cigarette, flipping off a camera that moved in his direction. He wasn't going to walk all the way outside to smoke if he didn't have to and if it was going to piss off Fury, then it was worth it. And if it had the chance of annoying Kitty if she heard, after all he had quit for her once upon a time, well that would be icing on the cake.
