"I did, didn't I?" she murmured faintly, and laughed as she reached up to brush her fingers along Steve's tear stained cheek. Steve believed she could do it, even when Wanda didn't, when Wanda refused to believe. She realized that now, realized that she was so afraid of failure that she'd refused to risk trying. It was never can't, she'd lied to herself, it was always won't. It was easier to believe that she couldn't so that she wouldn't have to. But that hadn't worked, had it? No, her life became worse for her denial. She'd lost everything.
When she'd first joined the Avengers it had only been because Uncle Charles thought it was a good place for her, but Wanda never believed that. Until this very moment- You did it. I knew you could do it- Wanda had never felt that she belonged with the team or deserved to be a part of it. Wanda Maximoff was tainted, Wanda Maximoff was a murderer, Wanda Maximoff was, more often than not, just a scared little girl. But an Avenger, the Scarlet Witch, couldn't be that scared little girl. She had to be capable, she was capable now.
She could have evacuated, she could have ignored Cap's pleas and gone, but she hadn't. With no faith in herself she'd still been willing to make a sacrifice, because she had faith in others. Wanda's acceptance of death meant now that she had no choice but to accept life and in doing so she had to stop being afraid. They'd been trying to tell her that all along, the people who loved her. If they believed in her, then wasn't she worth believing in? Her mistakes and her past did not define her to the Avengers, they were only a self definition, self-imposed boundaries and innumerable cant's.
Wanda understood, gazing blearily up at Cap, it could no longer be a question of what she couldn't do, but what couldn't she do? The Scarlet Witch could be a hero, would be a hero. Wanda Maximoff was an Avenger and she shouldn't deny it anymore.
"Steve," she began softly, "Steve, can I come home now?" Wanda asked because she was sure, certain that she wasn't going to lose her powers this time; because she wouldn't let herself lose it all again.
