I wasn't driven into medicine by a social conscience
Characters: Dr. Harold Jordan (sinister); anyone else at the World Genetics Summit in Spain
Location: Santiago, Spain
Content: Nothing bad
Summary: Dr. Harold Jordan finally presents the details of his 'cure' to the medical community and world at large.
Doctor Harold Jordan's name had been the top subject of internet searches for two days following the short note about him on CNN. The week following that it dropped to number three, directly behind Britney Spears Crotch Shot and Porn. It hovered in the top five for another week before dropping down into the mid-30,000's until the day before the Summit. At which point it shot back up to the top ten.
So by the time Sinister took the stage in his guise as a mid-aged and graying be-speckled man, he was quite certain that everyone in the room and everyone watching over the television was fully aware of all the details that could be gathered about him in the course of the last few weeks. Which, satisfyingly, wasn't much. Dr. Jordan's name was attached to a sizable ranch in the middle of Nebraska, as far from proper civilization as possible. Food was grown on site so only the barest minimum of out side supplies were brought in from the nearest town on a bi-weekly basis by one of the numerous live-in assistants. The set up had been established some years ago, complete with social security number - which the U.S. Government had access to. Jordan's taxes were done on time and there were no outstanding issues. To all appearances he led a very average life of research. If the government had sent over any spies to explore the laboratory in his basement they would find it somewhat less than state of the art for the current era, but adequete to the experiments he was running. None of which had live human or mutant subjects. Only donated blood tissue sample, each with the proper documentation showing they had been acquired legally and willingly. A decent amount of lab rats as the only animal subjects. All files and findings were encoded and encrypted in a cypher that Sinister knew couldn't be cracked. Because it wasn't a real cypher, just a bunch of random numbers and letters. Sinister had all the knowledge in his mind, the paperwork and notes were just for show.
He stood at the podium, looking a bit flustered at all the flashing lights from the cameras and perhaps even a little uncomfortable with the attention. The upper layers of his conciousness were filled with a carefully crafted persona of a man who hadn't had any contact with the outside world for close to two decades and would prefer to keep it that way. Random thoughts of needing to remember this point or that point about his presentation and how annoyed he was that the lights hadn't been lowered yet for the slide show and he could really go for some hometown BBQ instead of all that Spanish food the hotel had peppered in and out as randomly as mind untrained in the ways of telepathy. All for the benefit of any telepath - such as Xavier, who had a front row seat - doing a sweep of the room. They would find nothing out of place that would indicate there was anything more to Doctor Harold Jordan than what had already been given.
When the clamoring in the room finally died down enough and the lights had been lowered, Dr. Jordan began his presentation.
It was very comprehensive and very, very dry. Something that only those familiar with genetics would be able to follow without yawning or wondering what every fifth word meant. Another carefully crafted part of Sinister's current persona. The gist of the matter was that Jordan had found the singlular bit of DNA coding that caused mutations to turn 'on'. Not the X-Gene, though that was a requirement. But the specific sequence that made the X-Gene active. And the 'cure' - which Jordan admonished his findings being called because it was such a simplistic term that didn't begin to describe all the particulars of the process - was to just made that marker go from the 'on' position to the 'off'.
It certainly sounded simple, until one realized that to do this, the subject of the testing would have to undergo a very long proceedure of genetic therapy. In theory it was a permenent solution for those who wished to no longer experience genetic expression. But live testing had yet to be done because the process was simply too complex. It wasn't like he could just inject someone and be done with it. Yet.
When he was done, a good two hours later, the lights came up and the floor was opened for questions.
