"It's like in the great stories... The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger, they were. And sometimes you didn't want to know the end, because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it's only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines, it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something, even if you were too small to understand why."

"You want to do what?"
Mike stares at Stella like she's the total twit he thinks she is.
"Flaming torches. In my program. It'll be fantastic! At the circus, we…"
No one should ever start a sentence with those words. Mike waves her away. "Whatever, fine. I don't give a shit."
Two hours and fourteen pairs of torches later, though, his hangover is forgotten. The ice rink has become a half-melted mess covered in soggy torches and scorch marks. Stella looks like a bedraggled, drowned, burned, mortified, bruised rat, and Mike has everything on video.

BWHAHAHAHAHAHA Oh I love it! I love that Stella didn't think it through, that she couldn't even get close to making it work and Mike, for taping each and every minute of it. And the image at the end - GOLD!

Everyone thought they were perfect kids; close but without the Flowers in the Attic vibe Ingrid got from a lot of her charges.
Most of the time it was great; Isabelle needed ferrying between rehearsals and ice rinks, the occasional piece of cake slipped her way when her body demanded chocolate and her mother pushed salads.
Tom needed focus, needed channelling because he was so determined not to put his energy into the family business that it went everywhere else instead.
But when things went wrong; Isabelle burned with insane, unpractised rage while Tom stayed in cool, immobile denial.

Oh, this is beautiful. I always love me some Reichensiblings, and the insights into them as kids here are just lovely - I especially like the bit about Tom needing focus because he only knows where NOT to put his energy, and something about the nanny slipping little Izzie cake makes me go all "awwww, yeah!" Cake makes everything better!
One of my favourites so far! *pets*
(lol, also I may have unintentionally written something where I gave Tom the fire part of the prompt. We can pretend he does both, y/y? *g*)
winterlover on May 15th, 2011 08:05 pm (UTC) Re: Nanny-Cam
Actually I did read it like they both change between fire and ice with Isabelle usually being the "colder" one and Tom burning with his passionate convictions buth this changing when things went wrong I love this mixture/crossover (whatever the correct word for Überkreuzung is)
aldiara on May 15th, 2011 07:52 pm (UTC) A Difference of Temper
Tom's nice. He's nice, laid-back and generous, and it's all too easy to forget that when he blows up, he blows up hard, and when his claws come out, there's blood.
Marc's anger is cool; he gets quieter and chillier as his fury grows. When they fight – really fight – Tom's fire rages into empty space while Marc's iciness goes ignored, and they both come away wondering why they ever thought this could work.
But in the end, so far, they've managed to temper each other, and someone either cools down or warms enough to say, Don't go.
alsha on May 16th, 2011 05:42 am (UTC) Re: A Difference of Temper
*shiver!burn* This is...well, my favourite so far. It's elemental and personal and just choc full of intensity.... even before the "Don't go" which just kills me. 100 words my ass! Somehow you're cheating and fitting in at least three times that amount, right? Because otherwise I have no idea how you pulled that off.

HELL YEAH, ISABELLE. You can utterly destroy her in much more effective ways! <3333
Love all the fire imagery here, such a great selection of words - entbrennen, Weißglut, das Ausbrennen-Wollen der Sommersprossen. So visceral, yet balanced by the cool rationality she's learned. Beautiful.

“Mike! Shut up! You like Ron/Draco. I get it! Firey temper/cool disdain - makes for a passionate pairing. I know you love the drama. I just can’t choreograph my next show based solely on your desire to have manifested on the ice a relationship that will never be canon.”
Mike looks grouchily at him. He didn’t think Lars knew anything about Harry Potter.
Lars feels very exposed. He’s practically used up an entire day’s quota of words in that one outburst. Fucking Mike.
Mike rounds on him, “Could we at least role play?”

LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL OMG IT'S A GOOD THING WE'RE ALREADY MARRIED OR I'D HAVE TO SEDUCE YOU AWAY FROM SOMEONE ELSE. THIS IS PURRRRRRRRRE LOVVVVVVVVVE. <33333333333333333333333333333
*pets poor Lars and his overuse of words* Heeeeeeeeh.

OMG. That is so Lars.
And I love that Lars and Mike are both into Harry Potter. (Although, not literally into, darn it. Although if they ever do go that route, I want a front row seat!)
