Zod stood before the sleek ship, the end result of what seemed like an eternity. Some thirty five years, he had been in the Phantom Zone by his calculations. And for what? For all knew, he and his two most loyal followers were the only survivors of their race left in the universe. Because until he physically saw the son of Jor-El, there would be no telling that he had successfully made it to Earth at all. In a certain way, Zod saw his own quest as a sort of parallel, and he could not help but wonder if in his efforts he would not blow himself into an even worse, and more permanent oblivion than the one he had been imprisoned within all of these years.
"It's too risky", Ursa said. She never contradicted him or second guessed her decisions, but she voiced her concern now. He could not help but think that a lot of it had to do with how they had passed much of their time within the old abandoned Kryptonian prison they had discovered, the one that they were in now along with Non. The one place where they could stand as solidified mass, as opposed to being little more than ghosts anywhere else within the aptly named Phantom Zone.
"It should be me. You are too important."
Non grunted something that Zod took to be an agreement, but to their concern he simply shook his head.
"I shall lead this charge. It is my design, my plan, and my burden to bear. If I should survive, I shall send for you both at the first available opportunity."
What would happen if he failed, they all knew.
Tension remained within the trio, but no further arguments came forth. Ursa and Non had questioned him as much as they dared.
To Non, Zod gave a clap upon the shoulder. The brute was near mindless now, but not long ago he had been among the brightest of all their people. That was something he would not forget. To Ursa, he gave little more than a passing look. They had already given their farewell to one another the night previous, away from the prying eyes of their companion.
Carefully, Zod climbed into the shuttle and began activating its systems. If it worked, it would allow him to pierce the fabric of the Phantom Zone and materialize outside of it in the vicinity of the planet Earth. And if it didn't, he would likely never know what happened.
"Soon, my companions", he said as he slid the hatch closed. As he lit up the engines and lifted off, his fellow Kryptonians saluted him.
It was the last he saw of them.
