"Have a great night." A man in his early fifties said to the valet's as he circled the length of his black SUV. The men in the red vests mumbled their send off to the customer, already on the look out for the next guest. Jack DuMorne slid onto the leather seat and flashed a content smile to his wife in the passenger seat. He fastened his seat belt before he pulled away from the restaurant and merged seamlessly into traffic.
The couple made idle chit-chat as they began the trip home, their needs sated by yet another wonderful date night. Jack's wife Shirley was engrossed in a story about one of her coworkers and he nodded along with a smile on his face. The SUV made a few twists and turns before Jack reached one of the main thoroughfares. Shirley's story ended with a rather harmless remark that illicit a laugh from Jack. Shirley joined in on the laughter but hers quickly died away as Jack gripped the steering wheel in a fit of laughter. His knuckles seemed to pop from the strain of squeezing and he floored the gas pedal.
The SUV lurched forward and roared loudly as it picked up speed. Shirley's voice became panicked as she tried to ease Jack back to a sensible speed. The SUV swerved erratically as it raced toward an oncoming intersection. Jack's body began to shake with the laughter and his eyes were wide with panic. Clearly he was at a loss for words and just as confused. Jack's laughter began to crescendo as Shirley was practically screaming at him to stop. Tears ran down his cheeks in streams from scarred eyes as the SUV tore through the intersection. A little sedan clipped the back tires and the SUV jerked up onto two wheels before it careened out of control.
The SUV slid along its side, sparks kicking up in its wake. The vehicle wrapped itself neatly around a light pole after taking out a fire hydrant and mailbox. Jack's form became very still, resting against the glass of his window. Rigor mortis had already set in and a frozen grin stretched his face. Shirley hung in her seat sobbing. It didn't take long for those sobs to become laughs that continued until she choked down her last breath of air.
