Who: Major Carol Danvers
NPCs: Colonel Greene
When: May 5, 2003 - backdated as fuck.
Where: Karshi-Kanabad Air Base, Uzbekistan
What: Carol gets assigned a recon mission that doesn't end too well. Part 1.
Rating: PG-13?
"Major Danvers?"
Carol turned, clasping her hands behind her back. "I'm ready when you are, Colonel."
"This is a straight up recon mission. No combat. First point of duty is to cross the border into Afghanistan, if the Stark's stealth designs are working, then you proceed to the mountains just south of Mazar-e Sharif. The Taliban has been moving supplies into the area recently, but the satellites aren't picking up anything, so we want to use the StarkJet's experimental holographic camera to scan the entire region." Apparently, according to Stark himself, the camera alone was worth more than the whole plane.
"If you're spotted, if anyone tries to engage, you beat feet back to Uzbek airspace. Got me?" Carol nodded. She understood.
"Fly over Mazar-e Sharif, pass through the mountains, don't shoot anybody and be back by dinner," the Colonel surmised, lifting his hand in quick salute. "Good luck and good hunting."
"Thank you, sir," Carol did the same, saluting the Colonel.
Soon enough she was strapped in and sailing through the air. The bird was solid, more than solid, down right beautiful. About an hour and a half after she was checking in with the Colonel who was now in the flight tower monitoring Major Danver's progress. "Cheeseburger, this is home base. Report."
"Colonel, you can tell Stark this plane operates better than he does. Approaching fist photo op and engaging the holo-camera." Holding onto the control, Carol flicked a few switches on the plane's console. A little holographic display appeared advising her of the system status. "Oh, wow, this little projector in the cockpit is pretty cool. And its also distracting as --"
Bzzt. Bzzt. Bzzt.
What the hell was that? The holo-display flashed MISSILE LOCK IDENTIFIED. WARNING: ELECTRONIC COUNTERMEASURES FAILING.
"What the hell?" Carol fought against the rising panic in her chest.
"Danvers! What is it?"
"Missile lock, Colonel! Somebody spotted the unspottable plane!" She shouted back, focusing on how not to get blown up. The mountains were to the left, Carol snagged the controls and the plane soared in that direction. "Evasive maneuvers aren't working! Electronic countermeasures aren't working! Hopefully this does the trick." She few the plane in between a gorge, weaving in and out of the the mountains, it was tricky maneuvering, but still the missile was right on top of her.
"Sir, its gaining on me! I don't know what else I can do --"
"Eject, Danvers! Eject and make your way to the emergency extraction point in Mazar-e Sharif. An agent there will --"
"I'm too low! I can't eject! The chute won't have time to --" What other choice did she have? The missile was on her ass. With barely seconds to spare, she pulled the release, and ejected from the plane just as the missile made contact and erupted into a ball of flames. She had been right, the chute did not have time to deploy. What went up, must come down and Carol's descent back to earth was a quick one.
She grunted, "No! Please!..." to no one at all (maybe God...) as she tumbled over the rocky terrain, still strapped into her seat. Finally, she came to a halt, when she landed into a pile of rocks face down. The breath was compressed from her lungs and she was left gasping big gulps of sandy air. Time got a little fuzzy after that and she wasn't sure if she had been laying there, still entangled, for thirty minutes or three hours. Slowly freeing herself from the plane's seat, Carol managed to her feet, using it to steady herself. She went one way and her leg went the other. Unsure of what was happening, her head sank forward as she looked down. Oh, her leg was broke. That was funny, she barely felt anything at all.
"So...tired..." she muttered, falling back against the rocks and her seat, looking dumbly at her femur. That wasn't right. That wasn't suppose to happen. Her body was going into shock. The sound of humvees caught her ear and Carol tilted her head upward to look across the bleak horizon. "Hi, I'm just...going to...take...nap..." Reaching out, she slumped forward, blacking out just as the convoy full of militants reached her.
To be continued...
