WHO: Menelaus and Helen
WHEN: Friday afternoon
WHERE: Prospect Park
WHAT: A random encounter with Menelaus and his little girl
Now that school was out, Menelaus had Adriana to himself most days. One of his clients had called out so he decided to take a day further out from the city to Prospect park. Arianna had seen one of her new school buddies with his mother and was currently running around playing pirates with sticks for swords. He felt his stomach clench at the thought of her growing up so fast. She was already six, and he was in no way prepared for her to start hanging around boys.
The two laughed and chased one another while the mother sat on an opposite bench with her baby, watching the children as hard as he was. Arianna's flash of reddish hair shined in the sunlight as she ran off with her friendly suitor behind her.
The days of motherhood had long since been forgotten for Helen. It had been how many years since she had had a child of her own to raise and care for? She couldn't remember. She had been very careful over the years not to have anymore children, because she had always been scared Paris would show up and take her away from yet another child. Considering the last few years and her very recent freedom, those fears weren't unfounded. It seemed Helen was doomed to repeat history, but now with those who knew exactly what the curse did to her she hoped they would be able to break it if it ever happened again. In all honesty, she secretly wished Briseis could be with her at all times in case of such an emergency.
She felt more compelled to leave the safety of Briseis' apartment, wandering farther each time she left. She always carried her phone on her in case she met trouble. It made her wonder if she was even less of a Spartan knowing that she needed those people to save her. She didn't like playing damsels, because Helen of Sparta was no damsel. She could save herself. And yet, she couldn't escape something as simple as a curse.
She sighed, hearing the sounds of children laughing and playing. After stopping in front of the park sign she realized she had walked farther than she had meant to. For a moment she felt a little panicked and reached for her phone, but as she did so she felt a presence. It was familiar, but was it a good familiar or a bad familiar? Before she could dial Briseis' number she saw a hint of red hair pass by. A little girl who looked vaguely familiar, but Helen was certain she didn't know her. Her eyes followed the child, trying to place how she knew her, and that's when she spotted Menelaus. She looked outwardly relieved when she realized it was his presence she felt, now realizing who the little girl was, and walked over to his bench. She offered a smile, "I see Arianna is enjoying her summer break."
