WARNINGS: extreme attempts at not being massive bitches? Is that a warning?
To say that Demeter had not reacted well to the news of Persephone's pregnancy was to put it all very lightly. That the two of them had been seeing each other behind her back was bad enough, but a child?
Demeter had destroyed a lot of things in the city that night and not one plant in her apartment had lived to see the dawn rise.
But anger changed nothing. The fact that it made her physically ill to think of the two of them changed nothing. And so she tried to be supportive of her daughter. She loved Persephone, even if she held no love for Hades. And this child - this child that she was sure should never be, that was a crossing of fates and breaking of rules - would belong to Persephone, would be of her blood. And, because of that, it would be Demeter's blood as well.
When it came time to let Persephone go for the year, Demeter held her even more tightly than usual. She breathed in the rich flower scent of her hair and touched the warm skin that she knew she'd miss, and then she let her go.
Hades and Persephone were seeing each other in the summer, but Demeter was not ready to break the rules herself in such a way. She could remember the time they had seen each other when the rules had been broken last time and Persephone had stayed with Hades. She could remember looking upon Persephone then and not even seeing her daughter. The thought of seeing Persephone and not loving her... no, the idea of it was too much for her. And so she would wait.
But when Demeter heard Makaria mention that Persephone was taking her out on Sunday, Demeter began to have ideas she was sure she'd soon regret. And that was why, on Sunday afternoon, she showed up on her brother's doorstep, jaw set firmly as she waited for the door to be answered.
