Terspichore finished the position she'd been showing her Pilates class, and glanced at the clock out of the corner of her eye. "That's all the time we have for today, guys," she announced, nodding her thanks at the pianist. "But I'll see all of you back here at 2:30 tomorrow." The teenagers nodded and gathered their things, some of them waving goodbye and calling goodnight to her.
Terpsichore sank into a chair, massaging her temples. She loved teaching the kids, she did. They had so much potential, and they genuinely wanted to learn. But dammed if they didn't put her through her paces sometimes. Sometimes she just forgot about the seemingly inexhaustible energy supply teenagers had.
Standing up, she retrieved her own bag and left the studio, heading for the main stage. It was all but deserted by now, the Level 7 class had let out a few moments ago, so it was just her and the stage. She found an abandoned boombox in a cupboard backstage, and she slipped her Nutcracker CD into it, laced her pointe shoes up her legs, and switched on the music. The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy poured from the speakers, but that wasn't the footwork she was doing. She was simply moving as the music spoke to her.
Plie.
Arabesque.
Jete.
Pirouette.
Brise.
Deboule.
Terpsichore ran through all of those steps, and more, almost as naturally as she breathed. Her feet were a pale pink blur as they flashed across the stage, the stiff toes of her shoes barely making any noise as they made contact with the stage.
The music changed to the Coffee Dance, and she switched her style to match it. She was completely wrapped up in the music and the steps, moving almost without thinking about it. Doing what she was made to do-dance.
