Who: Red Baron and Emma Franklin
When: Friday afternoon
Where: Grocery store
Warnings/rating: tbd
College students needed to eat, especially when ones fridge was empty and the campus food couldn't really be called food. Emma had gotten used to it the last few years, but that didn't mean she always wanted to swipe her card and waste a meal on something that would make her queasy. This semester she intended to buy most of her food. Because knowing what was in your was surprisingly comforting.
Her roommates seemed to like the idea of making their own meals, but none of them had much time to spend preparing and cooking. They decided to leave the bigger meals for the weekend when they could all chip in and do their part. It was actually a lot of fun. Emma was on her second shopping trip, the fist week having gone really well and none of them had had to go to the cafeteria... yet. They had run out of food so she took her turn with the shopping and got things she liked this time. Luckily her paycheck had just come in and she still had a handsome sum of money from Christmas. Her birthday was just a few weeks away, and although she did feel bad about expecting money, she was expecting something from the several family member who always sent her some extra cash. They were more helpful than they would ever know.
She stood at the deli, waiting her turn to order the deli meat she wanted. There was that strange feeling she kept getting. The one she couldn't explain and habitually, she turned to glance around at the area. She didn't really know why, she just felt compelled to look around.

Conrad had come to pick up a few things. It was his weekend with Natalie, he wanted to make something for them to eat. A dinner that he wouldn't burn.
There was an odd tingle in the air but in this city, the list of immortals that could come into view were many. He wasn't like most of them. There was no one of his past that could come calling. He lived for the future. For the now. Right now that was making his peace with Natalie, taking things slow.
He stepped up beside the young girl not catching a glimpse of her just yet, or the fact that she had faint similarities to himself. Picking up a few items from the refrigerator just at the corner of the deli he remembered he needed cheese. He waited for her to retrieve her own order before requesting his.

After her orders were filled she set them in her basket. Just as she turned she stopped in time before bumping into the next person in line. At first she felt foolish for not looking, but then she had to do a double take.
She stood there for what felt like an eternity. In her wallet, no matter where she went, the only picture she had of her father was tucked safely away. It was something she looked at on occasion, but when she was little she had memorized that face. The man here looked so much like that, but it couldn't be him. Her father should be in his mid-forties, but this man was clearly much younger than that.
"Sorry, I..." she began, not really sure how to say You look like my father is supposed to look, "You just reminded me of someone." Well, this felt extremely awkward and she didn't know if she should stay and chat or what. It was very possible this man was her brother, but how did she even start that conversation? All those prepared speeches had left her mind the moment she saw him.

"Pardon me," he politely spoke not having meant to get in her way. His eyes glanced over catching an odd similarity between them, but he did not recognize her. "Do I?" That wasn't the kind of comment he received very often. He reached over the counter to take his sliced cheese and place it in his handcart. The poor girl seemed stunned. He would give her a minute to explain.

Emma was starting to think that maybe going out today had been a terrible idea. She and her roommates could have just ordered takeout instead. But nooo, she just had to go and buy them some more groceries like a good roommate. After she had her fill of staring she shook it off and looked around, her cheeks bright pink. "It's nothing. You'll just think I'm another New York freak," she reassured him and started to leave. This city was starting to get very weird.

Conrad laughed softly waving his hand at her to stay. He was curious as to who he'd be. A father? A brother? Perhaps an uncle? It was nice to feel recognized in a favorable way when his face was nothing like it had been in his first life. "I won't think you crazy, trust me." He shook his head, that attractive smile still stuck. "I've had my own share of crazy, anything you tell me wouldn't be at all surprising I am sure."

Emma considered him a moment and then turned back feeling more confident. "Alright," she said and took out something from her wallet. It was a picture of her mother with her father, some twenty years ago. "That's my mom.." she pauses, "and the man is my father. You share an uncanny resemblance to him"

His smile faded the moment he took that picture into his hands. It was a little crinkled, showing age from having spent a lifetime in her wallet. He remembered her mother, faintly, another failed relationship when Conrad pushed too far to have a wife and family. It suited him to have that now when he'd died so young before, but everyone now failed to hold a candle to Natalie. Natalie had a connection no other woman had had before, nor had they believed him when he said he was The Red Baron.
The recongization on his face was hard to miss. He wouldn't deny it, it wasn't like him to lie. "I remember your mother." Explaining why he hadn't aged a day would be another trick.

Emma frowned, this whole thing making her both uncomfortable and annoyed. She didn't know why she was angry, but she just was. She couldn't explain it. It was like all these years of wonder, of believing that if she ever found her father that it would be this magical moment of harmony and glee. But this was far from it. This man couldn't possibly be...
And then her frown was replaced with shock, "You know my mom? So what, are you my dad's long lost son or something? There's no way you're my dad, I mean... you're way too young. My dad should be at least forty-five now." Being (mostly) mortal, Emma simply couldn't wrap her mind around him not looking a day older than that picture.
