Who: Veronica & Monique
What: Sisters catching up and being adorable
When: Friday night
Where: Veronica's place
Once she'd adjusted to the time change, Monique was discovering she quite liked this new country she was in. Of course, one might say she was being hasty in that statement, seeing how she'd only been there about a week, but she still felt that way. There were all different kinds of people everywhere, new types of food to try, and of course, she was going to play tourist as soon as she could arrange it.
But for now, she was hanging out with her sister in the living room, watching TV and eating dinner, just having a quiet night in. She might like America just fine, but uprooting your whole life and moving across the ocean was a little draining. She honestly couldn't think of any place she'd rather have been, though.
She nudged her sister with her foot, dangling the other leg over the sofa's arm. "V" she said. "V, V, V, you might have to pinch me next week. It would really suck if this was all a dream and I was still back in London." She grinned. "Not that London isn't awesome, but it lacks both you and my adorable nephew, so in that area, it can't really compare."

When Monique nudged her with her foot she gently shoved the appendage right back at her sister. The familiarity of it all was something she'd needed. After everything that had happened, having someone from home was rather nice. She needed the sense of normalcy.
"You won't need that, you'll get stuck in New York's traffic and you'll yearn for London." She smiled then, "we missed you too." She set her hand on her sister's, "but I needed this, you know? I love mum and dad, but they were almost raising Bernie as their own. I needed to know if I could do it. I decided to have him, I should be his mother." She didn't want her sister to think she'd left for any other reason. If she hadn't had Bernie she'd probably still be in England.
"So far we're doing fine on our own, without the constant advice. It's hard, but I needed it. But either way, you stay as long as you like."

Monique just laughed, grinning. It was like picking up where they'd left off, and starting over, all at the same time. It was a good feeling, and she'd missed it.
"Ah, if that happens a lot, I'll just take the tube. Or the subway, whatever it's called. Or I can walk, last time I checked, both legs were working." She poked one of her thighs. "Yup." She smiled. "It was really quiet without you, V," she said. "But I know you did, and I don't resent you at all for leaving. You had to do as you saw fit for you and your son, and I respect that." She squeezed her sister's hand.
She didn't roll her eyes, but it was a near thing. She remembered their mum's constant advice on just about everything. "I'm sure you are," she agreed. She tilted her head. "You should have heard the lecture I got about finishing my graduate work before running off to parts unknown." She shrugged. "But like you needed to leave then, I needed to leave now. And I think I'll be around for a while, hopefully you won't get sick of me."

Smiling she released her sister's hand, glad Monique wasn't angry at her for leaving. "Well at least you had the argument you finished school. I never did. I'll get to it, eventually. And I get the need to stretch wings."
Her smile dropped a little then, "well I don't mind either but just be careful alright? The subway can be dangerous. I never like it. It's not like home. There's a lot of nice places around here in walking distance. Bernie's school is."
Grinning she shook her head, "what, get tired of a free babysitter?" She smirked, "joking, but I may use you every now and again. Bernie is supposed to spend his weekends with his father but," she sighed, "Dorian isn't the most responsible sort. He's got money, and an ego the size of the planet. I have to work on his schedule and God forbid if I change it. He changes it every day on the other hand. And Bernie doesn't get it, keeps thinking his father doesn't like him. I could strangle him for that." She paused then, "and I invited someone to meet Bernie. And Kyle and Lachlan are here too." She used the last tidbit to change the conversation, "and Kyle's seeing someone. Lachlan is himself and working on his doctorate's so we should find him something to celebrate that. I've got a bunch of friends who are very anxious to meet you too."

"'Sort of finished'," she replied, borrowing their mother's phrase. "At least that's what I've been told. And I know you will, you're certainly smart enough to do anything you want. And you're talking to someone who knows that need all too well."
She nodded, more seriously than she had before. "I'll be careful," she promised, drawing an 'X' over her heart. "I know things are different here. Maybe when you've got an afternoon off you can show me around the neighborhood? Cut out the need to travel really long distances."
She snickered and stuck out her tongue. "You know I have no objection to spending time with Bernie," she reminded her. "If his father decides to flake out, just tell me. I can stay with him whenever, since I'm not working. That reminds me, I need to find a job," she murmured to herself.
She raised an eyebrow. "How could anyone not like Bernie? That's practically a character flaw. I might be slightly biased, though," she finished with a smile.
Her eyes lit up. "V, have you got a man in your life?" she asked, grinning. "Is he nice? Tell me about him!" She clapped her hands. "I haven't seen those two in ages! We should all hang out and catch up. And I'd love to meet your friends! Have you told them stories about me?" she asked teasingly.

Laughing she rolled her eyes, "we could all have doctorates and mom would still say that. She just wants us to know we can reach the stars." She shrugged. She loved her mother, but sometimes it felt like she was asking too much of the kids. "Eventually. Bernie's at an age where he'll get it if I need to study. I just have to figure out what I want to do with myself."
"Good. I'd be devastated if anything happened to you, you know that. I'm going to ask you to carry mace too." She nodded then, "of course I can. I have the weekend off so we can go out and explore. We can let Bernie play guide. He thinks he knows all the best spots."
She gave her sister a grateful smile, "I'll help you look if you like bu until you do I would be so grateful to have someone I can trust looking after him. He's not the fussing type." She sighed, "Trust me, if you ever meet Dorian, and if I have a say you won't, you'll understand."
She blushed and looked down, "damn. I can never get you to follow my clever topic changes. And yes there is someone. His name's Anthony. We're just dating right now and he's sweet and adorable. We're getting along really well so I'm giving him the Bernie test. I kind of hope he passes. I really want this to work."
She laughed then, "well of course. They all know of my little sister and what a pain she is." she gave a teasing smile, "I'll call them both, figure out a time to all catch up."

"She totally would. And I know she does, but I just...I felt like this is where I needed to be, you know?" she said, running a hand through her hair. "That's because he's a sharp kid. I'm sure you'll figure it out, and it's not like there's any rush, you're still pretty young."
She was a little surprised at the request, but nodded anyway. Veronica knew the city better than she did, and if she thought it was wise to carry mace, she'd carry some mace. "I won't let anything happen to me, V. I promise." She tried for a smile. "I'm tougher than I look, you know that. But it doesn't hurt to be cautious." Her smile became more genuine. "That sounds good, I'd like that."
"You know I will whenever you need me to," she replied. "I just don't want to be the bum sister, sleeping in your guest room and not chipping in for bills or groceries or something." She tapped her fingers on her leg like she was playing a piano, even though she'd quit taking lessons years ago. She just needed something to do with her hands. "He sounds like a peach. And if he keeps flaking on you guys like you say, I'm not so keen on meeting him."
She grinned, her eyes sparkling. "Nope! Aww, he sounds adorable! I'm really happy you found someone nice. You deserve it, you really do. And I like that, 'the Bernie test'. Can I meet him sometime?"
She hit Veronica's knee lightly with a pillow, sticking out her tongue again. "It's in the little sister contract, you know, therefore I'm obliged. Or the sibling police will come after me. Or something." She giggled. "I'd really like that. It seems like I've just fallen out of touch with everyone, and I hate that feeling."

Smiling she leaned forward to brush her sisters hair from her eyes, "I know. I understand. Mom does too, she just wants us all to achieve great things.." She chuckled and leaned back into the seat, "I feel old some days, but I know. There's still time."
"I know, I know. You're my little sister. It's in the contract to fuss over you. Besides I'm not rich enough to bail dad out of jail if I tell him you got hurt and he decides to go to war with the country." She smiled, "I take weekends off now. I want to be social. Usually Dorian takes Bernie. He's decided to go fuck off to the Bahama's."
"Don't worry about that Monique. I'm doing fine. If I need some help I'll ask for it, but until you get a job, I'm going to be hospitable." she groaned then, "oh God Nique, he's just so," she make a strangling motion with her hands. "he gets on my temper. You know those guys who think they are Gods gift to the world and you have to bow to them? He's like that. And he's scary. So of course I get angry at him, and he's the type to hurt people. He almost broke my wrist once, just because I talked back at him." She gave her sister a look, "and you are not telling Bernie that. I'm never around him without company, but Bernie adores him, for some reason, and I promised." If she could convince her sister never to meet Poseidon, then she'd be happy.
Happy to change the subject she smiled, "of course you can. I was thinking of inviting him for a barbecue for the Memorial weekend. Keeps it casual, and he can meet Bernie and you. And he is adorable. He's a P.I.."
She went to take the pillow and laughed, "it's alright. I was surprised to find them both really. And you should see Kyle. Covered in tattoo's head to toe."

She smiled, because she was glad someone did. "Yeah. I know. All of her kids are talented, she wants us to succeed. I get it, I really do." She snorted. "Pssh. You're not old. What are you, all of 24? You've got ages."
She wrinkled her nose in a fond way. "I know. And we'd have to knock off Fort Knox for that kind of cash. Because he would totally do that. I think that is in the dad contract." She nodded. "Being social is good. And so is having some time to yourself, and to get out and be a person. Dorian can fuck off."
"If you're sure..." she said hesitantly. "You let me know if you do. And you know me, by nature I'm not really cut out for sitting around and not doing anything. Go go go, that's me."
She raised her eyebrows. "Oh, so he's like that? It's probably for the best we don't meet, then." Her eyes narrowed. "I'll kick his ass if he tries to hurt you again. Fuck that, V, you're allowed to say whatever the hell you want, and he's not allowed to hurt you for it."
"I wouldn't tell him that," she said. "And I'm glad you're not, that's probably a smart move."
"Yay!" She threw her hands up in a happy gesture. "Barbecue and meeting my sister's new boyfriend. Perfect Memorial weekend." She grinned. "Ooh, really? I wonder if he'd let me ask him about that. That's got to be an interesting job."
She laughed too. "I'll bet he looks like a rock-and-roller. Which wouldn't surprise me all. Funny how we all ended up here, isn't it? But good."

She chuckled, "it can be a little rough at times. But she does listen when you tell her she's pushing too hard." She stuck out her tongue and went to set her head in her sister's lap. "I still feel old."
"It totally is. I remember when I found out I was pregnant. Dad was ready to tear down London to find the guy responsible and make him be responsible for both Bernie and me. I wouldn't have wanted it though. I'm not forcing some guy to be with me for a child. That never works out."
She sighed, switching the topic back to Poseidon, "oh I know that. You know that. Apparently once you get tons of money logic goes out the window." She smiled up at her sister, "but it's okay. I'm not around him alone, and Anthony's already said he'd punch Dorian's lights out if he tried that nonsense again." She gently poked her sister's stomach, "plenty to do around here. Oh, you have to meet Nat. She's like my best friend here. You two would get along perfectly."
"I'm sure he wouldn't mind. I'll ask if he's busy. And Kyle is a rock star. His band hasn't gotten big lights yet, but I've heard them. They are good."

She shifted a little so they'd both be more comfortable, absently playing with a few pieces of her sister's hair. "I know she does," she said softly. "And I love her to bits, I think about her every day. But I have to fall down every once in a while, make my own mistakes, walk my own path, insert cliche of your choice here." She poked her shoulder gently. "Does that make me the whippersnapper in this conversation?" she asked with a laugh.
She chuckled, remembering that time. "Has it really been almost nine years? God, time flies. And I honestly was a little intimidated by him that time, being...what? Fifteen? Yeesh." She jerked herself back to the present. "It really doesn't. Plus, you raised a great kid, and you did it all by yourself. Doesn't that qualify you to join the League of Supermoms, or something?"
She sighed. "Isn't that how it always goes?" she said despairingly. Then she brightened. "Oooh, defending your honor! I like him already." She let out a little squeak when poked and answered, "Oh, I know. Sure, I'd love to meet her. How'd you two meet?"
"That would be excellent," she said with a grin. "Ha! I knew it. That's so great, I'll have to make sure I go and listen next time they perform."

This was familiar and comfortable. She'd done this time and time again, and knew her sister had done similar. She smiled to the comment, "I know. It's why I left too. I need to be able to deal with my own skinned knee's." Grinning she nodded, "totally, even though you're just a year younger."
She nodded, "he's growing up so fast. I just want to bottle it all up and stuff it away. That reminds me though, I have a party to plan. That'll be something." She laughed, "he's still intimidating. And I had help for some of it, but we're doing alright. Still alright."
"I also want to put Anthony in a bottle. Or in my bed." She smirked, "through the blog thing. I'll show you. We started talking and really hit it off. She's also from England, but a few years older then me."

It was simple, falling back into this routine. They traded who was in which position, but it was always like this. Just talking, or teasing, or something similar. "I think we've done alright for ourselves, don't you?" she asked. Then she grinned. "Thought so. I'll buy you a cane so you can shake it at me, while you tell me to get off your lawn."
"Once you figure that out, you should patent it," she mused. "People would definitely be interesting in something like that. And I can help with that, make grocery lists, help clean, stuff like that."
"He is," she agreed. "But he's Dad, and I wouldn't have him any other way. And you definitely are, at the risk of repeating myself."
She snickered. "I bet you'll wear him down eventually. And bottling a person just sounds...awkward, somehow." She hummed in agreement. "I'm down. She's going to be at the party, yeah?"

She grinned, "I don't know. I'd hardly mind some big mansion with a pool and a cabana boy or twelve." She grinned, "but money isn't everything. I have my son, and now you. This is happiness." She laughed then, "that would be awesome."
She nodded, "I would like that, and I know. That would make me rich." She straightened and then nodded again, "she will be. Hopefully."
