BASIC INFORMATION + | |
The world of Neptune is just like our own real world. The Vampire Diaries and Scandal are on television and Orange is the New Black will release a new season in June. All of the fanfic, gifs and media frenzy surrounding these shows exist in Neptune like they do here. So, what happens when Buffy Summers from Buffy the Vampire Slayer suddenly shows up in Neptune? A complete media frenzy, that's what. The first few displaced individuals that showed up in Neptune weren't afforded the same luxuries that the ones showing up now have. They were placed under intense scrutiny and had to prove that they were who they said they were. Nymphadora Tonks was the first to show up and has become an advocate for displaced individual's right to privacy. She was able to help put into place the Department of Welfare for Displaced Individuals (DWDI for short) who are now responsible for any "fictional" character that ends up in Neptune. It is up to each individual who shows up in Neptune whether or not they would like to become public and let the world know they are around. There are certain perks that come with being public (job opportunities, fame, endorsements), but there are also some major drawbacks to it too. The media isn't always the kindest of people.
THE MEDIA + | |
The media is a constant sore spot for the displaced individuals inside Neptune, Ca. The tabloids have paparazii hiding in bushes just waiting to find the next "fictional" character to make a buck off of. It's the biggest news story in the last 50 years. Newspapers, magazines, radio shows, tabloids, blogs, talk show hosts and news stations all want a piece of the pie and they can be ruthless. Individuals who decide to go public on their own have their choice of media outlets to use to come forward and let the world know they exist. In some cases news stations or magazines will try to negotiate an exclusive contract with displaced individuals in order to be able to be the first to cover their coming out story. There is a lot of money to be had for the brave.
