Few Banks of Americas varied. Charles Walton had worked at three over his entire life and all of them had been similar. They offered a decent, though not very good, pension. They had reliable hours. They used the same security system. They had trusted him. The latter was a mistake – a niggling one, he couldn’t shake off, even as he scanned the screens in front of him and his partner on duty. Below he could just make out the windows lining the two sides of the store – the view was more focused on the tellers down below, dealing with customers. He wished for a moment that the cameras were angled the other way – giving him a moment of warning perhaps – before remembering this made him less guilty. Somehow.
Lee let out a snort beside him and Charles grimaced. He didn’t mind Lee most days, but today he was a reminder of that guilt. It was inescapable. The air in the security room below the bank felt hot and stifling – he’d taken his jacket off three times already, before succumbing to chills. His mind would wander and the air would change again. He wondered, with more than a hint of morose, what had happened to his daughter; if she’d make it out of this. If she’d come back after two night’s missing.
He glanced at the clock – 3:52 – and knew that in the next five minutes, he’d probably know. His hands shook over the security’s controls, waiting.
