"I don't get it," Deacon said, sitting in the passenger seat of the Dodge, one foot out the open door, and staring at the glove box. "It's shut tight now and no matter how much I tug it ain't openin'. So how come it keeps smackin' you on the knees?"

Charlie was sitting with one half of his bottom hitched onto the passenger seat of Dolores and rubbing his raised knee. "I dunno," he said, "but it gets me in the same spot every time. I'm getting an adhesion," he added, without much concern.

"Just doesn't make sense."

Deacon frowned at the glove box and got out of the car to look for a tool.

Charlie swung his foot and scowled at the Car. "I'm beginning to think it's personal," he complained. "I bet it didn't happen to Zack or Jack."

"Didn't notice it happen," Deacon admitted and as soon as his back was turned....

thwack!

Charlie yelped and tipped backwards over Dolores as the half open door opened fully and cracked its corner against Charlie's shin.

"Oh - ow - shit," he said, on his back on the dirty floor with his legs in the air. "D! Did you see that?"

Deacon had turned around at the sound and stared a the car and then Charlie.

"What the fuck?" he said and went to help Charlie up. "You okay, Mouse?"

He looked at the car again, this time with a thoughtful - and slightly worried - expression on his face.

Unable for the moment to put his foot on the ground, Charlie clung to Deacon and hitched up his pants leg. "Eeew, look at that," he said. "She got me a good one. It's bleeding and everything."

He laughed, wincing as the brusies on the back of his head and his shoulders twinged. "Faulty spring?" he suggested.

"You ever read that Stephen King book, "Christine"?" Deacon asked, helping Charlie into a chair and finding a clean towel and wetting it in the shop sink.

"Stephen King's scary," Charlie said, as if that answered the question [which, in his case, it did]. "Why what happens in it?"

Deacon came back over and put the wet towel over the cut on Charlie's shin.

"It's about a car that's - alive," he said. "Gets possessive of its owner, kills people and shit like that. And the kid that owns it turns all bad too. Like him and the car feed off each other. Not sayin' that's happening to me but... Well we do live in the Manor."

He looked at the Car again.

Charlie looked too. "You mean - you mean she's jealous of me?" he suggested. "And - and that's why she tried to run us over that time?"

"Just a thought," Deacon said with a shrug and lifted the towel to look at Charlie's leg. The bleeding was stopping.

"Let's test it. Go see if you can start her up."

Charlie gave him a wide-eyed look. He might not read Stephen King but his imagination could cope with all kinds of appalling stuff that he knew existed in real life.

"Er - okay," he said and got up and went round to the driver's door. He put his hand on the closure and tugged. "S'locked," he said then sprang back as the door shot open. "No it wasn't."

He fitted himself carefully into the drivers seat, put his feet on the pedals and reached for the ignition.

It was a good thing his feet were completely inside because the door suddenly slammed shut. But when he turned the key - nothing happened.

Not a sound, not a click, he might as well have not even touched it.

"It's - um - not moving, D," Charlie said. "Is there a disabler or something? The key won't turn."

"No it should just turn."

Deacon got up and came around to the door and opened it with ease, leaned in and reached around and turned the key.

The car roared to life obediently.

Charlie frowned and leaned back in the seat, putting his hands on the wheel and just touching the accelerator lightly to make the engine roar.

All at once the steering wheel chilled under his hands and the seat seemed to be flowing around him, gripping his hips and shoulders, and a shrill note hummed in amongst the engine noise, ear-aching and putting his teeth on edge.

His eyes unfocussed and the interior of the car lit with a light as pale as that of rotting fish.

"D," he said. "D, I want to get out."

Deacon frowned in concern but moved and helped Charlie out, leaving the car running for the moment.

"What's wrong?"

"Possibly nothing," Charlie said, edging away. "How 'bout you get in now and do what I just did?"

"Oookay," Deacon said slowly and climbed in. He settled in the driver's seat and put his hands on the steering wheel - smiling to feel the vibration of the motor idling beneath him.

The nasty rotten light warmed, the chill eased and the shrilll whine deepened to a pleased moan. From the easy way Deacon relaxed in the seat it didn't appear to be trying to eat him alive.

"She likes you," Charlie said. "Oh yes. No problem. You'll be fine. As lng as she doesn't get away from you on a bend."

Deacon gave the wheel a stroke and the vibration of the engine deepend still. He reached and turned the car off and sat for a moment as the engine ticked and cooled.

"What'd you see, Mouse?" he asked after a moment.

Charlie bit his lips together and shook his head. "Nothing specific," he said. "Just a feeling. She likes you, doesn't want me near you, simple as that."

He smiled. "I can see her point."

Deacon snorted and climbed out of the Car, shutting the door gently and then stepping up to wrap his arms around Charlie's waist.

"Well she'll just have to get used to ya then won't she," he said. "Cuz I certainly don't plan on lettin' ya go."

Charlie gave a pleased little purr of appreciation and lifted himself on his toes to kiss Deacon.

He only flinched a little when the car alarm went off and removed one hand from Deacon's shoulder to flip Car the bird.

Deacon chuckled and released Charlie long enough to turn off the car alarm and get his keys.

"Now now, children, play nice," he teased then leaned in to Charlie and whispered, "at least until we get back to the apartment. Then I want ya to play naughty."

Charlie, who had linked his hands in the small of his back and had hung his head and was dragging a toe and mumbling an overdramatic apology, as if he was five instead of getting on for - OMG - thirty, glanced up at that and grinned.

"Fair's fair," he said to the Car. "you can take D for a nice drive another day."
