“Welcome to the Las Vegas Motor Speedway!” the energetic young woman cries out. She writes something in block letters on your nametag and then sticks it to your chest. You look down to make sure the color is right. If it’s green, you’re telling the world you’re available for romance. If it’s yellow, you’re just here for a friend. It’s the color you want, but that’s not your name. Before you can tell her that, she says, “To help everyone feel a bit more protected, you’re going by the model of a car!” Then she shoos you inside. Around the sides of the banquet hall are family-style tables, decorated for the event. You’re late enough that people are already sitting there, eating spare tires and other tasty treats. Caterers zoom around on rollerskates someone has done a lovely job decking out to look like chrome car tires. They’re happy to give you a little splash of something bubbly if you need to calm your nerves. The center of the room is taken up by tables meant for two. When you enter, they tables are empty. But before long, someone calls out, “Monster Matchers, are you ready to start your engines?!” The music cuts to the revving of a car engine. It’s very subtle. You might appreciate its subtlety. You might not. Hosts and hostesses dressed up as pitstop attendants (or the sexy version of pitstop attendants, in their hot pants and askew caps) help those who will remain seated to their places and then, with grandiose gestures complete with flags, send in those who will move around. Even if you’re not interested, they’ll encourage you to go around from table to table. “Make a new friend, Vegas!” Perhaps you cringe away. Perhaps you don’t. You might as well make some friends while you’re here. Once the speed dating portion of the event is over, the floor is cleared of tables. A group of merpeople take the stage and sing surprisingly good covers of 90s and early 2000s hits until well into the night. |
