Who: Eddie Nigma (The Riddler); NPC Doctor; NPC Guards
Where: Gotham City General Hospital
When: Saturday June 19th
Summary: Bad news gets worse, and Eddie contacts a friend for help
"Looks like there's now gonna to be two less wackos for us to deal with." The pair of cynical guards in the hall jeered between themselves. The first person they referred to was Poison Ivy, whose death had been broadcast yesterday, but Eddie didn't know that; Akrham had denied him television privileges in his hospital room. It didn't matter to Eddie, though - he had his own concerns, having just been told that his cancer was terminal.
"You can't remove it?" he quietly asked, stunned by the news.
Dr Sandeep stood close beside the bed, much more sympathetic than the guards. It was never easy telling somebody they were going to die, and just because the man was criminally insane didn't make it any easier for him. "The tumor is in an area of your brain where, if we attempted to do surgery, would most likely sever your brain stem, killing you on the operating table."
"I want to see," Eddie said, leaning forward, wanting to read the medical report in Dr Sandeep's hand, himself. The guards became momentarily alert, making sure that their prisoner wasn't going to do something stupid.
The doctor handed over the clipboard and while Eddie read, he continued, "We can give a painkiller to ease the headaches and another to help prevent any more seizures, but that's all we can do. I'm sorry, Mr Nigma."
Eyes frantically scanning the report, Eddie's shoulders sagged in defeat. "How... long do I have, doctor?"
"Because of the rate the cancer is spreading, we estimate three, maybe four months."
Eddie let the clipboard go limp in his grasp and his gaze drifted to the window, eyes becoming moist with tears. He pinched the bridge of his nose to try and regain his composure. "Is it alright if I can be alone for a while?"
"Of course," Dr Sandeep replied, soberly, taking back his clipboard. "The nurse will be back in a while to bring you your medication."
When the doctor left, the guards, who had been listening to the entire conversation, continued to laugh amongst themselves. "Enjoy yourself while you're here," one said to Eddie. "You're going back to Arkham, tomorrow. Looks like your life sentence just turned into a death sentence."
Still laughing while they closed the door, Eddie continued to look forlorn out of the window. That is, until the very moment he heard the door click shut, and then his expression changed to one of deep determination. From under the sheets, Eddie slipped out the iPhone he'd stolen from Dr Sandeep's coat, seconds before. Anticipating that the doctor might realize it was missing any time now, Eddie moved fast, his thumbs furiously typing on the tiny keyboard. His henchwomen, Echo and Query were doing time in Star City, so they couldn't do anything. Therefore, Eddie texted the only other person in Gotham he knew would help him out in a jam.
If he was going to die then goddamn it, he wasn't going to spend his last remaining days behind bars.
