Who: Draco Malfoy, Blaise Zabini
When: sometime in the afternoon Feb 15th, 1999
Where: Blaise's place
Rating: PG
Status: Incomplete

Draco had sent an owl off to Blaise, telling him to expect him sometime in the afternoon. It wasn't much of a surprise that it was Blaise who Draco had decided to see next, now that he was free. He was still in a bit of surprise that he'd managed to pull the wool over Blaise's eyes for so long while they were still at school. Or, had he? Draco wasn't quite sure. Blaise always saw more than he ever let on, and it would be foolish of him to assume that he'd been hoodwinked. Maybe Blaise had only chosen to turn a blind eye for his own reasons.

All of these things mulled in Draco's mind as he apparated to the spacious Zabini residence, and knocked on the door, waiting to be admitted.

Blaise had spent the morning making sure things were set up to his satisfaction. He still wasn't sure how to exactly handle seeing him face to face. It wasn't that he didn't want to see his former housemate, he just was apprehensive. As he had mentioned earlier in his journal, he wasn't thrilled with the fact that Draco had pulled one over on him. Snapping irritably at a house elf who crossed his path, he changed directions and headed for a different wing of the house. Finally deciding on the study, he strode the open doors and stood next to the window and looked out. Shaking his head, he took a seat in one of his favorite chair and crossed one long leg at the ankle over his knee. Lost in thought, he waited for the house elf to show Draco in when he arrived.

Draco was brought to the study where Blaise was waiting for him. It felt odd to him still, to be walking out and about without an escort or wihtout fear of being tugged back to the Manor. It didn't keep him for making sure his wand was close and at hand.

He stopped at the door when he was announced. "Afternoon, Blaise," he said urbanely, steeping into the room and going over to greet his old roommate with a handshake.

"Draco." Blaise replied, before standing and shaking the offered hand. "Please, have a seat." he said gesturing with his hand. He wasn't quite sure on how to act, what did one talk about when your old roommate has just been released from Azkaban? Mentally shrugging, he decided to just be relaxed as he could be.

"Would you like anything?" he asked.

Draco took a seat. "Nothing at the moment, thank you," he replied quietly. Well, this was awkward. He had some questions he wanted to ask, but he felt entirely out of his element. Shoudl he expect Blaise to be angry? Probably. He was trying to steel himself for some kind of outburst...something.

At least...he knew how to behave on that footing.

"So," he began. "There's been..interesting time had? Hasn't there?" Draco cleared his throat gently. "How--did you end up faring? Afterwards, I mean."

Crossing the room to the small side table, Blaise poured himself a drink. He figured it was late enough for one and that he just might need it. Taking a seat in a nearby chair, he chuckled softly. "Interesting is one way of putting it." He glanced aside at the second question, before turning back to face Draco. "I managed." he said quietly. "The Ministry froze our accounts, searched our home, and even now conducts periodic searches. I'm not sure what they think they'll find." His hand tightened on the glass briefly before releasing, though otherwise he showed no emotion. Taking a drink he continued. "Though I suppose things could've been worse. At least we got the family artifacts moved before they searched."

Leaning back in his chair, toyed with his glass before turning his attention back to the conversation.

"How's it feel to be a free man?"

"Free is a relative term," Draco said. He noted that slight tightening of Blaise's hand around his glass. "I have been cleared by the Ministry, of course, but in popular opinion...we both know that I'm just this side of dirt." Draco was glad Braise didn't offer him a drink. He already knew he had a propensity to drink himself into a stupor...he was trying to break himself of that bad habit.

"I won't be exactly the most sought after dinner companion for quitre some time," he said. "I've lied to too many, burned too many bridges with others," he added. His gaze was steady on Blasie as he said that. He wondered which camp Blaise placed him in. "What aboutyou? How does it feel to be trusted enough to work within the Ministry?"

"The court of popular opinion is almost always harshest." Blaise agreed while shrugging. Taking a final sip, he placed the half filled glass onto the table next to him. Blaise wanted, no needed to have his wits about him.

"You are, of course always welcome here. Never doubt that." he answered returning his gaze. "I was through being angry with you some time ago I think. After all I can't fault you for doing what needed to be done to survive." Had he said too much? mentally shrugging, he continued on to answer his question.

"I don't know that trust is the right word exactly. It's more that I'm qualified and this way they can keep an eye on me. I have no illusions that I'll be respected, but in time things may change."

Draco was trying hard to read Blaise, but that was never an easy proposition. He had alwasy held everything close to the waistcoat, as it were. He didn't easily let others through for even a hint. "There's having a certain resignation in why someone decided on the necessesity of an act," Draco said slowly, "and actually understanding the why. There aren't many people who will allow themselves to get remotely close to the former, much less get to the latter. But, it's good to know that I haven't blasted too much of the bridge all to bits."

He did understand was Blaise was staying. Keep all the snackes close at hand," he said. "Of course. Shacklebolt isn't entirely stupid...unlike his predecessors."
