Hershel felt a bit on edge. All right. So, Hershel felt more than a bit on edge. He found himself, more often than not looking over his shoulder, scared shitless out of his mind that that man, the one that made him burn down the cafe in Diagon Alley, would come back for him. To make him do something else horrible, or to hurt him. To kill him even. And Hershel was a naturally paranoid person as it is, honestly. He didn't really need to extra agitation of his current situation with the DMLE. They'd told him it had likely been a Death Eater, or a sympathiser. But that had made no sense to Hershel, because they were supposed to have all been caught and in Azkaban or on their way, or dead. Not running around dark alleys, taking his free will and forcing him to do horrible things. People had gotten hurt that day. By his wand. And even though his friends and family kept telling him it wasn't his fault because he wasn't in control, he couldn't help thinking that it was. Hershel stopped before an alleyway. It was his usual shortcut, but it was dark, very dark. And he could readily admit that he was scared out his fucking mind. But what was better? Running down a short dark alley to get home, or going to long way and being out longer? The alley, of course, won out, and Hershel started into it, hands shoved into his pockets and his pace more than quick. There was a shuffle and the sound of something hitting the ground that forced Hershel to spin around. "Who's there?" The only answer he received was that of a cat scurrying past and Hershel let out the breath he'd been holding. Turning back around, he resumed walking, pushing to reach the end just a little bit faster. Alecto had been biding her time to eliminate Avery's little mistake. She wasn't sure why he'd left the man alive in the first place, but it wouldn't do for it to come too soon on the heels of the attack. Better to let everyone stew for a little bit. She'd taken to following him, seeing where he went what routes he took, where best to ambush him so that he would die without witnesses or any chance to fight back. That was why she and Avery were waiting quietly in the alley the man took home. She'd watched him go down it this past week, hoping he was feeling reassurance that nothing had happened to him yet, becoming more and more careless. As they waited, she heard the sound of footsteps and Avery started forward, knowing into a trash can and sending a sack of garbage to the ground. A cat, startled by the noise, bolted out of their alcove and into the main alley, and she watched it disappear with narrowed eyes as she heard the man's footsteps falter. "Idiot," she hissed softly, grabbing his arm and pulling him back. "Slowly." His heart was beating wildly in his chest as he tried to get himself to be rational and calm. it had been more than a week, right? If anything was going to happen to him, it would have happened by now. Therefore, he really had nothing to worry about, if he took this situation in logically. "There's nothing to worry about. Nothing at all," he murmured under his breath, trying very hard not to think of the upcoming alcove that anyone could hide in, because no one was there. "There's no one here. No one but me, looking mad for talking to myself." For some reason, he was finding this shortcut longer than usual; it had to be the nerves. That was the only explanation, really. When he was close enough, Alecto stepped out in front of him, leaving Avery to close in on him from behind. "You really ought to be more careful in dark alleys," she said. "All sorts of rats and other nasty things can be waiting for you." Hershel stopped short when he caught sight of the woman suddenly standing in front of him, the very look of her not giving him a very good feeling. He backpedaled as quickly as possible, more than sure that what he needed was to find the nearest place with a lot of people, but found that wasn't exactly possible when his back hit something. Turning he caught sight of the man he'd backed into, his look just as sinister as the woman who'd spoken. Figuring she was the leader between the two, he turned back to her, a pleading tone to his voice, the look on his face matching. "Please, don't." Alecto simply shook her head. Did he think he'd get them to change their mind by begging? "Sorry, it's too late for that. You were just at the wrong place at the wrong time." She lifted her wand and killed him with a murmured curse and a flash of green that lit up the narrow alleyway, not wanting to be bothered with torture today, they didn't have time to get caught. Behind her, Avery cast the dark mark into the sky as she pushed past him to leave the narrow space. Her sharp eyes caught movement at the end of the alley and she quickened her steps, wand at the ready. That movement was none other than Madoc Cadwallader who’d taken a step back from his frozen state. He’d stopped the moment he heard people talking a few yards ahead of him. Having spent the evening out in Bristol drinking he’d hardly expected to stumble upon a confrontation of this nature. The alleyway was a good apparition point home and he’d used it on a number of occasions. The presence of other people was…..out of sorts, but he’d waited for the space to clear – or so was his original intention. Unfortunately, his friendly alcoholic buzz had left him almost instantly when a body fell to the ground after a green flash of light. A flash of light he was quite certain was out of sorts for muggle flashlights…. “Aw….fuck,” he mumbled to himself when the dark mark filtered up into the sky. His heart picked up in pace and he was almost instantly sobered. When he looked back to the two remaining figures the sight of one of them approaching caused him to stumble backwards. He kicked a trash bin lid and fumbled slightly - but remained on his feet to the best of his ability. As the noise echoed up the building walls Madoc broke into a sprint back toward the street. Alecto didn't hesitate, breaking into a run and firing stunning spells after the fleeing figure. Avery puffed along heavily behind her, his larger form falling quickly behind. At the entrance to the alley, she paused, squinting and trying to see the boy who was still running, firing another spell that hit a barrel and knocked it into his path. Mid sprint he'd retrieved his wand from his inside coat pocket. Unfortunately, the moment he'd chosen to look back to see how closely those chasing him had managed he tumbled over a barrel he'd not acknowledged as being there. With adrenaline still pumping through his veins and a dull pain in his wrist he unleashed a piercing hex in the woman's direction from where he laid awkwardly on the ground. With the vacant street it wasn't particularly complicated to make note that it was in fact....a woman standing at the opening of the alleyway. A woman he was certain he'd seen before... Despite his supposed recollection Madoc didn't bother to see if the hex hit her. He skillfully apparated immediately away from the location once the first bit of magic left his wand. Alecto cried out as the hex hit her shoulder, opening it up and sending her blood pouring onto the pavement. Behind her, Avery caught up, catching her as she stumbled back and steadying her before apparating the both of them away. It was hours later that she woke up in the garden shed, with Avery bandaging the bloody wound in her arm, and she gritted her teeth sharply as she stared at the dark rafters above her. She would remember that boys face. And he would pay. |
