[It's late when Euphie slips down the hall in her pajamas to lightly knock on her brother's door. She doesn't want to disturb or potentially alarm anyone. And she hopes she won't be waking him up.

She's not even entirely sure what she wants to say or do. She just needs to see him. It usually makes her feel better. She hopes tonight won't be an exception.]

[He's still awake and at his computer, but puzzled by the knock. It's probably Suzaku. Who else would have reason to come pester him in his room this late -- aside from C.C., who wouldn't bother knocking? Lelouch gets to his feet and crosses over to the door and opens it, shifting to stand in the doorway.]

What is it, Su-- [And then he pauses. You're not Suzaku, Euphie.]

[She's aware.] Oh, good, you're still up. [Pauses awkwardly here because she's not sure what to say next.]

Could I come in?

[He's the tiniest bit red, but he smiles at her, expression softening.] Well-- Of course you can. Everything's alright, isn't it?

[But even as he asks, he's stepping back and waving her in. Whatever the answer is, you're still welcome to come in.]

[She steps inside and shuts the door behind her, before stepping over to the bed and sitting on the edge of it.]

I...

I'm not sure. [No.]

[sitting down next to her, finding her hand and taking it in his] That's not what I was hoping to hear. [gently. he'll let her get around to it, however she'd like]

[She looks at him apologetically. She doesn't want to come bearing problems. And yet...]

I'm worried about all of the monsters. How can people feel safe here when it keeps happening? [How can people like it here and want to stay?]

[smiling faintly at her] I know. It's difficult to keep spirits high when we're all worried about what might happen in the night. It isn't such a bad place -- not so very different than Ashford where I lived -- except for that.

I want to think it's not such a bad place. [She's full of doubt.] But the monsters come so often now and sometimes in the day?

[She looks down at her hands.]

...And it takes people.

[is this about that airheaded knight]

--The monsters are dangerous. I can't pretend otherwise. But... [a beat, and then, murmuring] The disappearances are almost as bad. And they may not be something we have any power to fix.

Did... Did you know that Gino is gone? [Casually! Really. It was. Kind of.]

[damnit] I heard about it from Suzaku. I'm sorry, Euphie. You two were getting along so well, weren't you...?

Seeing? [it takes a moment] --Dating?

[what-- what would Euphie want with an airheaded knight like Gino Weinberg. no, no. Euphie's very good at ignoring obviously concerning things about people she likes. but how long have they been seeing each other? he bid on her at the date auction, but not that hard, so... afterwards? have they-- guh, do not want.

Then. I suppose I'm even more sorry. [a smile, faint but more or less sincere]

Well... We never actually discussed it in those terms, but I think so. [There had been some kissing and spending time together.]

Technically... [his voice is still kind and gentle, while he slips into more clinical reasoning] We've only been here for a few months. Given the number of people we've seen disappear and come back even in that short time, and Acumen's stated claim that it will never stop bringing people back -- sooner or later, I think it's likely that he'll be back, unless Acumen is somehow stopped from performing his functions. [which is of course Lelouch's end goal, but for now...]

Like Nunnally. She came back when we least expected her, didn't she? [a smile for her]

She did. [Which was something that made her happy. Something she feels guilty for now with how dangerous the prison has become.]

I would... I would like to see him again. [Selfish, but it was still so new, and she misses him. She tries not to think of what else happens when people return sometimes. The part where they don't keep their memories.]

I know how you feel. But you'll see him again soon. He's probably a high priority for Acumen, you know... being part of the defense force, and all. [he just made that up but maybe it'll make her feel better]

Well, that depends. Obviously he wouldn't be imprisoned, but he didn't dislike being here. And you wouldn't be there.

No, but... [Blushes a little] I'm hardly a reason for someone to want to stay in a prison, Lelouch.
