LOTR - Holiday Extravaganza
Photobucket
thanks to [info]rebeccama for the gorgeous banner!

MORNING EVERYONE!

I hope to see you all here at least once this weekend.

Discuss anything you like...from the fantastic narrative opening to Frodo and Gandolf sailing off to Valinor and everything in between.

I'm open to discussing any CHARACTERS: elves, hobbits, orcs, wizards, kings, men, dwarfs, ents, uruk-hai, the ring, gollum, or Sauron. (Did I miss any?)

PLACES: The Shire, Rivendell, Rohan, the Dead Marshes, Gondor, Isengard, Mordor, Bree, the Misty Mountains, Lothlorien...what did I miss?

THEMES: good v. evil, friendship, loyalty, love,

OR just come and squeeeee with me over all the pretty. ;)

I think the opening narrative sequence is one of my fave scenes. It's so amazing. The music, the fighting scenes...Sauron...the ring...the story. OMG.

"The ring of power has a will of it's own." squeeeee

I didn't truly believe that it would be a good film until I saw it. LOTR seemed to be a completely unfilmable story. I remember watching that sequence and starting to realize that maybe just maybe the film really would do justice to the story.

I always wished they had Treebeard do the opening speech since it was originally from him.

My favorite part of the opening is the Elrond and the rest of the elves battling Sauron. It's so beautifully shot.

So pretty and green and...hobbit-y lol.

I haven't watched these movies in so long, it's sad. I think it's time to bust out the extended editions lol, if they're not in storage :/

I remember (when I first saw this at the theater) that I wanted to live in the Shire. It's just so peaceful and calm looking. It also made wish I could just pack up and head to New Zealand, lol.

ilove the juxtaposition of Bilbo narrating "Concerning Hobbits" and the various scenes in the life of the Shire e.g. "of not counting among the very wise" with the Hobbit dealing (not) with his ear wax. i love the shot of Samwise with the flowers.

If I had to pick someone to sleep with it would totally be either Arwen or Aragorn, but I'm definitely down for a threesome.

um...that is my comment to this marathon, hee!

The MUSIC! I can picture every scene thru the music and go thru all the range of emotions the music evokes.

some of my favourites:
- the Shire (Concerning Hobbits)
- The Bridge of Khazad Dum
- Lothlorien
- The Breaking of the Fellowship
- The Riders of Rohan (the three running thru the plains)
- The arrival of the elves at Helm's Deep (early part of Helm's Deep)
- The death of Haldir (ending of Helm's Deep)
- Gandalf and Pippin's ride to Gondor (Minas Tirith)
- The End of All Things
- The Return of the King (expecially the part that Aragorn and Arwen reunite)

Howard Shore's an absolute genius!

btw - Tweak just said "I am a Hobbit"

Howard Shore rocks my classical socks!!

I have all three soundtracks, and I swear, the ROTK one was in my car CD player for a year. I still love the music, and can visualize each scene. ROTK is my favorite, though. Arwen's Song when she sees her son, omg, Renee Fleming OWNS me!!! Anduril, it's so magical and majestic, and Pellenor Fields, I used to blast that in traffic. lol

On the FOTR soundtrack, definitely Lothlorien, so spooky and awesome, Khazad Dum, with the tribal chanting, and that soprano soloist as Gandalf falls, it gives me chills. And the main theme, as they're leaving Rivendell, when the orchestra builds up to the crescendo, damn!!!

Okay, I'm SUCH a music geek, lol SUN!

The music is amazing. I am one of those people who doesn't sit still easily, but I can put on the soundtracks and just close my eyes and listen. (Of course it is even better when the music is combined with the actual films.)

I'm scaring myself. I didn't realize I could practically recite the entire first movie line by line.

And oh, how I've missed the pretty. Even if the story had been crap, I still would've fallen in love with the cinematography. Gorgeous.

I go into visual overload when I watch these. Peter Jackson understands the concept of using all four corners of the screen like nobody else. You can't take your eyes off the screen, ever. Some of my favorite visuals:

-Nazgul on Weathertop
-race to the Ford of Bruinen
-first glimpse of Rivendell
-shot of arguing council reflected in the One Ring, as it flames
-Khazad Dum (entire sequence)
-first glimpse of giant mallorn in Lothlorien
-the Argonath
-Aragorn arriving in Rohan, as the flag tears away from the pole
-Fangorn, and Treebeard
-Helm's Deep
-elves arriving at Helm's Deep
-Gandalf arriving at Minas Tirith
-LIGHTING OF THE BEACONS!!!!! Best. Cinematic. Moment. EVER.
-Gandalf riding out to stave off Nazgul
-Arwen's vision of her son
-re-forging of Narsil
-Opening of Minas Morgul, flight of the Witch King
-first glimpse of the Secret Stair
-Ride to death of the Gondorian soldiers (omfg, Pippen singing and the look on Faramir's face)
-Muster of the Rohirrim
-Elrond presenting Anduril
-Paths Of The Dead (and under the mountain)
-Aerial attack of the Nazgul (I jump up and down and scream "RUN!!!" every time, lol)
-Denethor doing a swan dive off of Minas Tirith's peak (I come up with a different scream every time: "bonzai", "Yee-haw", "cowabunga", stuff like that)
-Ride of the Rohirrim at the Pellenor Fields (beautiful!)
-Eomer screaming as he sees his sister (I scream, too)
-Frodo and Sam climbing Mount Doom (the pennywhistle makes me cry, and so does Sam's speech)
-FOR FRODO (guh)
-the fall of the Dark Tower
-Flight of the eagles
-coronation
The Grey Havens

I'm sure I left out tons of stuff. Those are just some that come to mind at first thought.

The scenery is beautiful, the set design magnificent, the cinematography is to die for. I see movies like this, and want to work with the location scouting crew every time.

Unlike some, I love and live for the details. I like seeing how the actors are trained, how the sets and miniatures are designed, the conceptual drawings (Alan Lee is a god!), all that stuff. It gives me a deeper appreciation for the movie. Although Peter Jackson will burn for killing Haldir, his attention to detail and love of the source material can soothe any ruffled feathers the Tolkien purists might have. for every part he left out or composited, he built up other parts to the point of perfection.

When Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli catch up with Gandalf the White in Fangorn, how is it that Gandalf has the Elvish cloak and pin? He was not in Lothlorien with the Fellowship.

I was watching CGI Legolas jumping on to the horse in front of Gimli at the Wolves of Isengard scene. Just a couple of minutes back you see Gimli trying to get on the horse. That saddle is mighty HIGH!!! Do you think Legolas may have hurt his CGI self??

Sam is totally my favourite character
[info]chrisyeap
2008-07-06 12:54 pm UTC (link)
I absolutely love Samewise Gamgee

1) As comfortable fighting with his skillet as with Frodo's sword
2) Never weighed down by his backpack
3) Paid glowing tribute to Gandalf's fireworks
4) Never forgets his mission of sticking to Frodo even if that means running into the water even tho he can’t swim (Frodo's stalker in QAF terms)
5) Carries the best salt in all the Shire on his journey to parts unknown
6) Always knowing the right things to do at all times e.g. the 2 Nazgul encounters, 'quality' Faramir, Shelob and the list goes on.
7) "The ring drove your brother mad" speech to Faramir
8) At knife point he says sweetly "It's me. Its your Sam. Don’t you know your Sam?"
9) The "there’s some good in this world and it's worth fighting for" speech that makes me cry every time
10) Steadfast to the end of all things "Don’t you let go."
11) And at the end of all things, all he thinks about is Rosie Cotton. sigh...

He seems like a simple character but he's the most matured person we know and he has an understanding of the situation way beyond a gardener's intellect.

If I were ever to be stuck in an impossible situation I want it to be with Samwise (other than Justin of course).
