Who: Neville Longbottom and OPEN to all.
What: Raking leaves. Sort of.
When: Monday after school.
Where: Outside, one the castle grounds.

Neville returned from school that afternoon, and took his sweet time heading back up to the castle. There were brightly colored leaves falling all about, and he crunched them noisily under his admittedly clumsy feet--but at the moment, he didn't mind the clumsiness. He was deliberately walking heavily, just to hear the the crunch. An Idea came to him, and he ran to the grounds keeper's tool shed to see if he could procure a rake. Or two.

He wasn't sure if he would be able to charm them to rake the courtyard by magic, but he was determined to have a pile of leaves to jump in, even if he had to do the raking himself. Though, if he could get one of the others to help him, maybe blisters wouldn't be an issue...

Lily was not feeling in the best of spirits. The grown-ups arguing did not sit well with her. She didn't like the idea that she would grow up into someone who would be so unhappy, plus, her parents never argued like this. She didn't know how to handle it. Neville was starting to become something of an older brother to Lily and she liked spending time with him, she needed something cheerful and the idea of basking in a very autumn tradition sounded grand.

She changed out of her school clothes hastily, throwing them on the bed rather than putting them away. She then threw on a pair of jeans and a sweater before heading down to the castle grounds to play in the leaves with Neville.

She saw the spare rake immediately and picked it up to assist the other boy in making a larger pile. "How big do you want it, Nev?"

Sirius hadn't bothered changing out of his school clothes before Reg had grabbed him and all but dragged him out the door. So he was still dressed in his dark trousers and sweater and white shirt as they hurried down the corridor and out the main door onto the grounds. The pair arrived one straight after another, as always, and Sirius stopped long enough to scrub his hand through his long hair and frown thoughtfully at the children building the pile of fallen leaves.

"You need some help?" he finally asked them. This was the kind of thing, he decided, you really needed House Elves for. Even if they were horrible.

Regulus had all but dragged his brother down, though he had changed first. That was the first thing he did when he got home, he'd noticed the adults around him, the ones he was growing to admire, they always had clean clothes. And while it had only struck him to keep his school clothes clean, anything else was fair game and saw there share of mud, sand, water and anything else grimy the boys could dig up, he was becoming rather prompt about the clothes he chose to take care of.

"Nev said he would charm the rakes," Regulus said a bit longingly, not thinking at all about House Elves. He really wished he had his own wand, but you didn't get one of those until you went to Hogwarts. That made him wonder if he would ever get a wand himself. "Did it work, Nev?"

Neville had raked a few smallish piles, and was now sitting, contemplating his wand, his remembral, and one rake, while Lily continued to consolidate the piles using the other. They wanted as big a pile as they could manage--and he thought it would be nice it it would rake itself back together after they had jumped. He thought he had the basic idea, but he was a bit anxious about actually trying it out.

He glanced up, smiling a nervous smile at the brothers Black. "If you want to," he said, "I haven't tried the charm yet." Though now he was wishing he had done it before he had an audience.

Daniel got changed just as quickly as Reg did, but that was because he hated wearing his uniform. Once he was in his normal clothes, he shouted where he was going to Eames, even as he was running out of the flat. There was homework, but it could wait until later.

He arrived outside not long after Reg and Sirius did, skidding on a few wet leaves and landing on his arse with a thud. Blinking, he looked over at Reg, then at Nev, and then burst out laughing. "...Hello!" he finally managed to say, before getting to his feet again.

Lily smiled at the newcomers, even giggled a bit when Daniel showed up and landed on his rear end, but only because he laughed at himself first. She continued to rake the leaves into a pile, even while no one else did anything, though, she supposed it wasn't as if Reg or Sirius or Daniel could do anything while Neville was thinking about what charm to put on the rake.

"Go on, Neville," Lily said encouragingly, she had nothing but belief that the other boy could make the rake move, he was so much older than her (only a few years actually, but to Lily's ten year old mind that was quite enough to make someone mature). And he already knew so much magic, how could he not achieve what he planned? "The pile needs more leaves."

Simon had finished work early and was on his way back to his quarters when his attention was taken by the sounds of laughter. He frowned and grinned, checking the latter when he realised he was doing it. Then, after a moment's hesitation, he decided to follow the sound.

It didn't take him long to find the source of the merriment and he stood for a moment watching the kids throwing themselves around in leaves. Checking himself again, he flushed crimson at the thought that anyone seeing him watching might think him a pervert... which he most definitely wasn't, after all... and he turned to leave again. But there was nobody around to cast judgement and so, after hesitating once more, he turned back in the direction of the playing children and got closer.

With Ickle Tabby in tow!

Kurt was being a babysitter but he didn't mind in the least. Tabby wasn't the nicest girl but she was like him and Jamie and he thought he owed to her to at least give her a chance. Even if she cursed like a sailor, he didn't have that right to judge. So when Tabby asked Kurt to watch the little version of her Monday afternoon he agreed, glad that maybe this would give him a chance to influence the younger Tabby for good.

He appeared in a cloud of smoke several feet away with Tabby clinging to his body and laughing madly. She was wearing her school clothes because she had just been picked up from after school where she had to serve a small detention. Kurt uncurled his tail from around her and let her down from where he held her up.

"Okay?" he asked.

Tabby made a small, happy sigh, and nodded once as she stepped back.

"Boy that's quicker than the trolly! Don't wait up Kurt!" she turned and went running toward the others and stopped dead beside Lily.

"What the hell are you all-" she turned to look at Kurt over her shoulder and he arched an eyebrow.

"I mean, what are you all waiting on??"

Regulus knew of the blue man, but he didn't know the dark haired man that had come up. In either case they made Regulus freeze. They were adults, adults he didn't know like Andromeda or Severus or Eames or Al. They made him uneasy because of Her. Back home, his mother was so strict on everything, it tainted his view of adults. He just didn't want to anger any of them and his general response to strange adults was to go very, very quiet. Which he was doing now, while sidling closer to his brother.

Tabby waited for someone to explain why they were waiting when she glanced at Regulus. She knew her older self was somehow friends with Regulus the older too but didn't know any details. She almost felt like she had to be real friendly to this Regulus just because of that alone but it wasn't really forced. She liked him because he wasn't mean so much and he didn't talk as much as Sirius did.

Sometimes Tabby just wanted to tell Sirius to put a sock in it.

She glanced at the other man and made a face, scratched her elbow and then moved over to stand beside Regulus and she jerked a thumb over her shoulder at Kurt.

"That's Kurt. You know Kurt? Watch what he can do, HEY KURT! C'mere!"

Kurt was eying Simon as well but he wondered if Simon was just supposed to be watching the kids. Before he could ask he got summoned by Tabby so he stepped toward her and the kids.

"No need to shout, liebling. 'Allo, kids," he greeted.

"Kurt, can you do that thing? With your tail??"

"I suppose.." he rubbed his chin and looked like he might not.

"PLEAAAASE?"

"All right, all right," he chuckled. His tail curled around his narrow waist and wrapped around Tabby's tiny ankles before he quickly edged it up until she was hanging upside down. Tabby squealed and he lifted her as high as he could go before beginning to count.

"Eins.. zwei.. drei!"

He hefted her high with a flick of his tail and Tabby went flying pretty high into the air, laughing all the way. He flipped backward twice and landed just as she came down the few feet over so he could catch her in his arms. Her face was red as a cherry and her hair was all a mess.

"Reg, you gotta try it!"

Sirius shoved his hands in his pockets, tilting his head and waiting for Neville to do something. Then there was a weird noise of someone apparating behind him, and he turned to see Tabby arrive with that blue man. Sirius grinned brightly, a smile that wavered and fell a little as he felt his brother shift nearer to him.

Sirius wasn't quite as reserved around adults as his brother - if anything he tried to divert as much attention as possible in his direction. But no'one seemed angry about the leaves... Still, it didn't mean no'one could start screaming at any moment. Sirius didn't leave Regulus' side as Tabby approached, just chewed down on his bottom lip.

As Tabby and Kurt began to play, Sirius turned back to glance at the Lily and Kurt, before reaching out to wrap his fingers protectively around his younger brother's wrist. When he turned back, he couldn't help the slightly amused smirk that coiled around his mouth. That Kurt person was really cool. When she addressed Regulus, Sirius glanced across at his sibling, giving his wrist a light, reassuring squeeze. "You want a go?"

Neville smiled at Lily. Everyone seemed distracted by the newcomers, so while he thought they weren't looking h drew a deep breath, and flicked his wand at the rake, murmuring the magic word with an effort of will. Then he started jumping up and down as the rake hopped up and started sweeping the lawn.

"It worked! It worked!" he crowed, though there was no telling how long it would last, or how effective the raking would be. He was just ridiculously pleased that it had moved at all.

Simon had initially felt relieved at Nightcrawler's sudden arrival - even if it WAS Nightcrawler and Simon couldn't help but jump at his appearance - and he'd been about to relax a little when he noticed the other man didn't seem too happy about Simon being there.

Simon geared himself to reply when Nightcrawler approached him, but closed his mouth with a snap as the fuzzy elf was distracted by one of the kids and allowed himself to be moved away by her. Well... that wasn't a bad sign. After all, if he'd considered Simon a real threat surely he wouldn't have been so amenable...

His attention was further taken by a yell of triumph and he looked to its source to see Neville Longbottom full of proud glee at his raking achievement. Simon grinned - J.K. Rowling never managed to write the boy being successful at much at all, plus Simon would never tire at seeing magic - REAL magic - in action.

He moved closer and even risked a short burst of applause. Then he caught sight of Nightcrawler and turned to him. "I'm staying here," he opened in explanation. "I share a room with Selene... my name's Simon. I was just watching." His voice dropped a little. "I'm not a per... I was just watching," he trailed off, dropping his gaze to the floor.

Lily, too, was aware of the adults who had arrived. She really was glad to see Tabby, the other girl was the only girl Lily's age here at the castle and sometimes it just wasn't as fun to play with a hoard of boys all the time. She knew who Kurt was, he'd watched Tabby on occasion, and Lily gave him a smile. But the other adult, Lily did not recognize him. It was true she didn't know all the adults in the castle but they didn't stand around watching them play.

And that made Lily very uneasy.

Lily was torn, she wanted to spend time with her friends but she didn't want to be watched by someone she didn't know.

Neville's triumph made Lily smile at her friend and she offered encouragement and congratulations to help him.

"Nev," she said, looking down and not wanting to disappoint her friend, "I'm ah- I'm gonna go find Sev, okay?" That seemed like a good excuse, Sev wasn't here and if the strange man was still around when she and Sev came out they could go off and play on their own.

Severus the younger had gotten Neville's note as well, but had taken longer to get down to the yard, because he'd knocked over a few things in his haste to change clothes, and had to tidy up before the professor would let him go. He'd done it without grumbling, because he knew if he grumbled, he would be made to wait longer, and ran out to meet his friends as fast as he could.

He came up behind Lily, just as she was about to come and look for him. "I'm right here. Good job, Neville."

Lily whirled around, looking very lost and even somewhat afraid. Sev had been her ticket to slip away from something uncomfortable without offending any of her friends and now it seemed like that way out had been pulled out from under her. She cast her eyes about, mentally searching for a new excuse.

"I-" she looked from Neville to Severus, "I need- I forgot... that I need to change my shoes." She knew it was a poor reason, but she dropped the rake and dashed off back towards the castle before anyone could ask for details.

Simon didn't know what to do. The girl ran off before he could try to stop her, and he didn't even know if that would have been anywhere approaching a good idea, although he suspected not. In his own mind, and just for a second, he was back to 11 years old and on his own in the school playground...

... but that was ridiculous. It was years ago, and he was only watching them. He wasn't even going too close, and the one person he HAD risked going anywhere near was Nightcrawler, who was another adult and could have kicked Simon's arse into the middle of next week without breaking a sweat if he so wanted.

He looked back to the ground again. "I'm sorry," he murmured to nobody in particular, then looked back up at the remaining children and started to back away.

Kurt sighed and shook his head at the use of magic, clearly impressed. "That is truly amazing Herr Neville!"

That was when he noticed Simon looking uncomfortable as if he did something wrong. Maybe he did not know the kids but he could have just been curious... Kurt stepped toward Simon.

Simon paused in his retreat and looked to his left and right when Nightcrawler spoke, trying to work out who the lucky sod was to be getting a welcome.

Himself? Really?

He turned back with a nervous smile and a brief nod then glanced down so he wasn't looking Nightcrawler in the eye and extended a hand after he'd wiped it against his jeans leg. "Hello Ni... Mr. Wagner," he offered. "I'm Simon Bellamy. I do live here, yes. In the west tower. I didn't mean any harm. I was just watching them, and then Neville did magic and I love to watch it."

After giving a firm handshake Kurt tilted his head at Simon. Why was he not looking at him? Did his appearance startle him? He rocked back on his heels and his tail twitched anxiously.

"Ja, the magic is spectacular. It is nice to meet you Simon. How long have you been here at the castle? I would change my appearance if it bothers you but I am not wearing the device that does that."

Regulus liked Tabby too, she was always so energetic and that was a good compliment for Regulus as he tended to be a bit lost when someone wasn't taking the lead. It was probably why things worked so well when his brother was around. And while Regulus was happy that Tabby was talking to him he still was unsure about the blue-skinned adult and the dark haired man. It might be fun to be tossed in the air by the man's tail - that was something to wonder at, the man had a tail - but his reserve and fear of unknown adults held him back. He looked at Tabby and Sirius, and a very small, fleeting glance at Kurt before mumbling, "Mmm, uh-huh," and shaking his head, casting his eyes back down.

He eyed the rake that was moving on its own, pulling more leaves into the great pile, with longing. No one was yelling yet, but he knew one of the best defenses against an angry adult was a lot of space between him and that adult. He stepped to the other side of Sirius, inching closer to the objective he had in mind when he and his brother had come down in the first place.

Simon's head snapped up at Nightcrawler's suggestion, his eyes widening. "Oh no... no, not at all," he said firmly, shaking his head for emphasis. Dear God, this man had been one of his childhood heroes... and still was, if Simon was honest. Offended? Sod that for a lark.

"No, I just... seem to have frightened some of the children a bit, and I didn't mean to. I didn't realise I was watching them so intently. I'd never hurt them... ever. I've got a younger sister at home."

Simon knew all the crap about bullied children turning into bullies themselves, but his own experiences had only made him determined never to inflict what he'd suffered on another living being and he'd kept to that. Actually, he'd kept to it so well that he'd forgotten how to interact almost completely. He was trying though, and God at least was supposed to love a trier.

"Ah, I was unsure but it is common for my appearance to make some uncomfortable. I am trying to be.." he frowned from the lack of words and muttered something in German under his breath. "Trying not to care what others may think."

He shrugged and glanced over to the children, eyes briefly falling to the young Regulus. He seemed so painfully shy but Tabby was having none of it. She marched back over to Regulus and put her hands on her hips.

"Hey Regulus," she said, a hand of hers gesturing to the moving rake. "Is that the kinda stuff you're gonna be able to do?? Man, I wish I was a wizard!"

Kurt smiled at that and looked back at Simon.

"You frightened only some of the children, they are simply taught to be cautious around those they do not know. That is Tabby just there, my friend's younger self, and I know of the rest even if I have not spoken with them much myself."

Simon had no idea what the fuzzy elf was talking about, languages never having been his strong point, but he got the gist of it. "It doesn't bother me at all," he assured him with a small smile, "and even if it did it'd be my problem, not yours."

His gaze followed Nightcrawler's back over to the children. "I suppose I'm lucky I was only watching them," he said. "I'm prone to film a lot of what I see. Now even I know that's not a good thing where children are concerned, no matter how innocent the motive... and it would have been innocent, I swear." He punctuated his avowal with a solemn gaze at Nightcrawler. "It's just something I always do. I've got hundreds of hours of film back at home. They're just having so much fun. I don't think I ever had that much fun when I was little."

"Is it a hobby?" he inquired, genuinely interested. Kurt was not an unkind soul and he found it hard to see the absolute worst in people. Even those that he thought might hate and curse him got his sympathy on some level.

"Or is it a job as well? I know many people have been looking for jobs here and some are lucky enough to be part of something they love. I am thinking I will be lucky as well, my friend Jamie is starting a business that will be useful to those such as myself."

"Sort of?" Simon replied, warming to the conversation. "I mean... it is, but it's more than that. It's become what I do. Like keeping a diary, I suppose only I do it more often during the day. It's not a job... it's far more personal than that. I don't show my films to anyone, but then I suppose nobody's really asked." Sally had asked, of course, but Sally was using him to find out about their Probation Worker so she didn't count.

"I do have a job, but it's not much. It's just cleaning the streets," he told Nightcrawler, anxious in a way for the other man to understand that he WAS working and not just spending all day every day messing around with a phone camera. "What sort of a business is your friend starting?"

"A diary, ja, ja that makes sense. I know some people do things called blogs and I keep a prayer journal sometimes," he admitted. Kurt wasn't too worried about Simon. He wasn't getting any sort of odd vibe from him and with Kurt around he was positive the children were safe. He gave the kids another side glance to be sure certain someones were in fact being safe though and not trying to blow things up.

"Hm? Ah, he is calling it 'Heroes for Hire' for as you can see, I am gifted in certain aspects of my... mutation, as if my friend Jamie, and we intend on using these gifts to do tasks for local residents. I suppose it sounds a bit much but then where I came from I was part of a group that did such a similar thing but for free. We hope to be useful and make a living... and if we find anyone able to be useful to our cause then perhaps expanding to more than just us three."

He rolled his shoulders and resisted the urge to settle in a crouch.

"I mean Jamie, myself, and Thor, though I believe Thor's time is spent doing other important things as well so mostly Jamie and myself."

Simon nodded a little more enthusiastically, relieved beyond measure that Nightcrawler was actually getting it and not even suggesting that Simon move along. "Sort of a diary, yeah," he agreed. "I've got shelves full of dvds at home that I've made. It'd be really good if I can get my films home from here, but I'm not holding my breath about it. I got sent back a few weeks ago and I didn't have any with me."

He smiled a little, feeling a small sense of camaraderie. "I can do stuff, too," he told him shyly. "I can turn invisible. It's not much, compare to some, but it's handy for finding things out." He shrugged at the end, a little defensively. After all, he knew what Nightcrawler could do and it was considerably more laudable than his own achievements.

Simon frowned, considering. "No, not a mutant exactly," he finally decided. "I wasn't born this way. We got caught in an electrical storm and struck by lightning. This was the result for me. The others got different abilities." He didn't go into detail since it wasn't for him to discuss the others in their absence.

"I don't know how I could help," he continued. "I'm no good for fighting. I mean, I can spy and steal, but that's it. Anything I'm holding goes invisible as well as me so it's not like you'd see a bunch of keys floating in the air all on their own or anything like that."

He was actually warming to the subject now, and the children's recent rejection of his presence was fading a little in his mind.

"Thank you!" Neville's chest swelled with pride at the praise, though his cheeks flamed, and he looked a little sheepish. He and Sevy both moved a little closer to their friends, Neville attempting to get out of the center of attention, and Severus just puzzled as to why Lily had run away home.

"What's wrong?" Sev whispered. "Why are we letting Neville's hard work go to waste?"
