Severus rose up over him, a single rose caught between this thumb and forefinger. The bud was perfect - fresh and open, the red deep and the green of the stem looking like life itself.
It still paled next to Severus' sleek body reflecting candlelight off a sheen of perspiration.
They were both naked and Severus was straddling his thighs, looking proud of himself. Remus laid back on blue silk, feeling warm and safe and content to wait for Severus' next move. Rose petals drifted down from the canopy over Severus' bed, two and three at a time like the falling of leaves in autumn.
Severus placed the rose against Remus' forehead and then traced it very slowly down the slope of his nose, across his parted lips, over his chin and under to the skin of his neck. His stubble grazed the fragile bud, creating a burst of fragrance. Severus continued, and Remus could see the rose making a path down his chest, the tip of it curled and jumping over the contours of him.
Remus could taste the rose, his senses were so filled by it.
Severus circled the rose over each of his nipples, making Remus' breath catch, and then he leaned further over him, brushing the flower along each of his ribs carefully, as if he were painting and Remus was the canvas. Remus thought the texture of the rose on his skin felt different than the tickle of the feather - this touch was firmer, like the gentlest of massages.
Such a comfort, this quiet, soft attention focused solely on him. A petal fell from the canopy and Remus tracked its path as it floated down alongside Severus' body. Remus was dimly aware that neither of them were hard, but it didn't matter as long as Severus was willing to continue touching him, even if only through the conduit of the rose. It had been so long since anyone-
Suddenly Severus pulled back and settled on his knees again, the rose resting between both hands. Remus tried to speak, but found he couldn't. He was pinned by the skeptical look in Severus' eyes. He reached up toward Severus' face, but Severus was too tall. Remus tried to pour all of his questions into one desperate look. Why did Severus stop? Why was his face filled with such doubt?
Severus looked down at the rose, brought it up before his eyes and plucked one large, perfect petal from the bud. He placed the petal in the middle of Remus' chest and put the pad of his finger in the center of its bowled shape, all without touching Remus' skin. Watching his finger intently, Severus dragged the petal across Remus' chest to his nipple again, circling it once before leaving the petal sitting over Remus' heart.
It sat there a moment, rising and falling with Remus' breath before Severus waved his hand over it, the petal appearing to dissolve and sink into Remus.
With a mild sense of panic, Remus looked up, determined to say something, to ask what the devil Severus was playing at, but no sound would come from his throat. Severus had a look of challenge on his face, one eye brow raised and lips pressed firmly together and his arms crossed over his chest.
Well?
Remus looked around for the rose, but it was nowhere to be seen. The sheets, however, were still littered with petals. He took one between his fingers and lifted it toward Severus' heart, although he was not quite sure why he felt compelled to so. Again, Severus was just out of reach, although surely his arms were long enough. His fingers were an inch from Severus' chest, but Remus continued to lay flat until his arm trembled and the petal slipped from his grasp, dropping down between them.
It seemed to fall into forever.
As one, all the petals in the room rose and flew into Severus' chest in never-ending streaks of red until a single blood rose with a stem of life stabbed through Severus, who threw back his head and screamed and Remus woke with the sound still echoing in his ears:
Is this what you want?
