The committee had really gone out of their way this year to make the annual Masquerade Ball an event to remember. Their theme this year was "Frost" (even though it was only the end of August), and they had done an absolutely brilliant job decorating the huge ballroom. The entry way was beautifully decorated with trees, as well as chairs for those who needed a rest. The rest of the ballroom was equally as beautiful, decorated in whites and soft blues, with candles hanging from a mirrored ceiling to look like starlight. The dining area held beautiful tables, as well as gorgeous ice sculptures, and makeshift chandeliers made out of frosted branches. It was beyond magical. In a corner of the dance floor, a small string ensemble gathered around a world renowned concert pianist to set the mood with soft waltzes and other such music.

There is a separate room that contains the items for the silent auction. There are several sculptures, some paintings from the local gallery, and some package trips to the spa.

It was impressive how enraged her sister s could make her. Cynthia only decided to attend the ball because someone needed to watch the people from her school as they attended. Being a student, she figured why not? She wasn't going with anyone and had never really been to a ball before anyway. Not one she did not work, of course. She had attended the last three balls as one of the servers. Now she was a guest and the caretaker of the young girls who were rich and entitled like her sisters. Now, she had no money for some designer dress and, indeed, had saved up for a long time to afford the one she had on top of her other expenses. She liked it, and it was her favorite shade of blue. Better, was her cat mask That ensured she did not have to do much make up other than lipstick. It was perfect for someone who hadn't even attended prom in school. But her sisters, the Purple Hazed Bahama Mama and the I Skinned a Snow Leopard For This, decided to make her feel like she had shown up for a black tie event wearing a dinner party dress. After informing them that they looked like they came off the reject pile of a toddler's drawings, she walked into the ball, huffing and really not in the mood to be there. At least the mask covered her entire face so no one would see who she was.

She didn't even know anyone who was going to be there aside from Nieve, Hunter, Calla and, of course, the snobby duo of the century Luca and Caius. The latter pair she planned on ignoring if possible. She figured they would both have some fancy, dumb lady on their arms hoping to become their trophy wife. So Cyn went to the corner after showing her over-21 ticket to the bar and getting herself a whiskey sour and sat in the back of the room, far from the ballroom floor. She had no desire to dance that night, especially not after a good portion of the guest list heard her sisters insulting her.

Luca was bored out of his mind, and that was putting it mildly. He didn't really like these kinds of events, but with his family being one of the most prominent donators, he was obligated to attend. He'd chosen his outfit and gotten fitted one afternoon a couple of weeks ago with Royce, and he was still pretty happy with his decision. A fox mask adorned his face, and he'd ditched his brown contacts for the evening; they had been bugging his eyes for the last couple of days, and it was nice to not wear them for once. Sure, it meant that his miscolored eyes were visible to everyone, but that was the beauty of having the mask on; no one knew who he was anyway, with the exception of his father, Royce, and Caius.

He'd been cornered by his least favorite person on earth; one of Cyn's sisters (the dumber of the two), and was about to rip his eyes out when her sister finally pulled her away. He honestly didn't know who on earth let them pick out their clothes, because they both looked absolutely ridiculous. Finally free, Luca headed straight to the bar, ordering himself a whiskey and coke, and looking for an escape route. He found the darkest corner he could, far away from the bulk of the people, only to find he wasn't alone. "I didn't realize this corner was occupied." He said, smirking a little beneath the mask.

In comparison to her sisters, Cyn thought she looked rather lovely. First of all, her color scheme was not an assault on the eyes and the dress was classy and did not have a slip so high up a game of "Color of the Day" could be played. She had spent a good long while picking out a dress because she honestly did not know how to look for something like this. She settled on her favorite color- blue. It always looked good against her skin and, if nothing else, her eyes would be the same color and match the cat mask. She thought she was clever with it, but now she sat grumbling to herself as she realized maybe this had been a stupid idea. Sure her stepmother was in with this group, but she was nothing more than a high school teacher who had put herself through college and still worked two jobs. She shouldn't have come, she decided.

It was when company arrived by accident that Cynthia was close to just getting up and leaving. Sure, no one knew who she was, but she had been utterly embarrassed. And she did not put it past her lovely step sisters to announce to the world what an embarrassment it was to have her as a sibling in public, as they often did. She looked up at the man with a rather smooth voice and could not help but stare. Sure, his face was hidden, but he looked pretty good from what she could see. And he sounded just as excited as she was to be there. "You sound about as excited as I am," she replied, sipping her drink. "Don't worry, I'm about to leave the ballroom and hide in the entry way when that clears out." Her night had been ruined, but she had to be in the building until it was time to collect the children. The entryway had a lot of alcoves to hide in. Her plan was pretty much set.

Luca let out a little bit of a chuckle. There was something familiar about her voice, and he couldn't help but wonder who it was beneath that mask. "But, my dear, didn't you know? This is the party of parties we're at. How could I be anything but excited to be here?" His voice was dripping with sarcasm. He took a long drink from his whiskey and coke before turning to look at the girl. "No, please. Stay. Misery loves company, after all."

From what he could see of her, she was pretty; blonde, slight, and pretty much exactly what he liked in a woman. Not that he'd been trolling the market as of late. Perhaps that had to do with a certain blonde history teacher he happened to know. She looked amazing in that dress she was wearing; the blue was a perfect shade for her skin tone. His curious nature, however, was kicking in. "So, what has a pretty girl like you hiding in a dark corner with dark and mysterious strangers?"

She gave a hollow laugh to his comment, hearing the sarcasm. It was off the charts, even for her, and for some reason it tickled her to no end to hear it. She eyed the masked man beside her, slightly happy to know that this conversation was hidden from everyone out in the center of the room. "Oh, right, that's why I came. Because this will be the best one ever. Until next year." She knew how the last ones had been, and the venue looked nicer, but it was more rich people rubbing elbows and feeling very important indeed. She was shocked when the guy asked her to stay, but considering she had nothing else to do, keeping him company would be better than suffering this alone. "A partner in cynicism? I guess I'll suffer this with you," she replied, leaning back slightly in her chair and crossing her ankles as she sipped her drink.

Cyn found herself continuously trying to make eye contact with him. Maybe it was the light, but his eyes seemed to keep changing color and she wanted to see what it was she was actually looking at. Of course, the woman had taken her time in sizing her new associate up. He was at least healthy, but not scrawny. And a sharp dresser, but she found herself enjoying the way his voice rolled wit such playful confidence. It made her smile. When he asked what she was doing hiding, Cynthia remembered her sisters and audibly groaned. "Well at least some people missed it," she said more to herself than anything. "Let's just say there is a pair of tacky twits and their half-wit mother I am avoiding for the rest of the night." She did not feel like telling the guy, even if they would leave this not knowing who the other person was, about her embarrassing moment. He;d hear it soon enough. "How about yourself? No ladies pining to hang off the arm of someone who looks so-" Cynthia found she couldn't help it, and continued with a smirk. "Foxy?"

Royce + Anyone!

Royce didn't roll in (ha) until the ball was well underway and this was, in a way, deliberately done. For one, he was one of those people who didn't mind a dramatic entrance when he could afford it. For another, it had never been in his habit to be the first in many gatherings as doing so will make him have to wait for his friends and how boring is that?

After his Rolls-Royce Phantom was taken away by valet, he strutted into the venue dressed as a hussar, a popular masquerade costume with thanks to a certain classic musical and he was not at all worried that he would find a duplicate. And if he did, he at least would be the better Raoul de Chagny than the other, the costume having been customized to highlight his good features such as his shoulders and his shape.

And though it was not in the "original costume", Royce couldn't bear to go without a mask, one that came straight from Venice at that. Boy knew how to use his money well.

After paying the coat keeper a visit to see who had availed of the ranch's 5% discount (and being surprised that as much as two people had done so), he finally immersed himself with the crowd to start to blend in. Not a minute would pass and he would already have a glass of champagne in hand, looking for a friend.

Normally, hearing that Thora dressed up for an occasion meant she left the mud-stained boots at home and did something other than her usual sloppy excuse of a bun for a hair style. The only time that was not the case was for the annual ball. She had been attending them since she was 16 because her mother's side of the family was a big benefactor. The only reason she looked forward to going was the fact that she was able to hang out with Caius, Luca and Royce while watching them get looked at by the woman. She, of course, was never one for the whole anonymous appeal with her outfits. Everyone knew who she was immediately when she started talking, so trying to be mysterious lasted until she opened her mouth. Still, the girl cleaned up exceptionally well when she needed to. Most of the people in her age group (which she was explained still included the high school kids even though she was 21) dressed like it was a high school dance. Sometimes, even the adult wore outfits that left the girl who had little clue about the current fashions scratching her head. But she was not here to judge. Entirely. She was here to mingle and find people to spend time with before getting dragged into glad-handing people or fixing something.

Of course, spotting the people she knew was never a hard task. Look for those who looked like their ensemble looked like it cost more than the entire event and it was a fair bet it was someone she knew. So, when she saw a rather stunningly-dressed man with a mask that she was sure had legitimate gold guilt paint on it, she watched him walk and turn to see what his hair color was. Lighter shade of brown and there was no dumb bimbo clinging to his arm- definitely wasn't Caius. Thora smirked to herself and walked over with a small smirk on her lips. "These balls always have constants- a few bad wardrobe choices, good food and my favorite Courtright showing up fashionably late."

With the mask over his face, it was a little harder to make out Royce's reaction but it was one of good cheer, with a smile on his face as he moved his champagne-holding hand to one side with a dramatic slight toss of his head and shoulders back. Not seen: him rolling his eyes because it just seemed to be the thing to do.

"Vous avez déjoué mon plan," said he in French before he offered his elbow to Thora, the one which did not have a jacket slung over it. "But it's always a relief to find a bright girl in the crowd. I thought my intentions would be misunderstood. You're certainly a sight for the bored, Thora."

Thora smirked when he replied and happily took his arm. "Mon apologie," she replied lightly before looking around at the room. His mask did a much better job at hiding his face- the point of a mask, to be sure. Still, she knew Royce too well, as he was more or less yet another person in the ever-growing number of extended family, to think he was actually displeased at her for knowing who he was in an instant. "Be warned, that is the extent of my party tricks until you need me to change the music and lighting scheme.," she added with a small laugh. She was all-too used to these events by now and it hardly bothered her that she was still not the perfect person at these gatherings. At least she always looked the part.

"Well I'm glad, I can't seem to figure out where Luca and the Hallorans wandered off to," she replied. "How have you been? I've seen some horses wandering around if you haven't spotted them."

"No, I haven't." And frankly, all pride for the ranch aside, Royce wasn't sure how he'd feel about seeing the horse costumes, exactly. Either he hadn't been back home long enough to figure out the trend, or, some people are just desperate to get on a horse. "How did they look like? Were they actually at least ingenious?" This last question, he sort of whispered as he leaned towards Thora in a manner that was almost conspiratorial. Royce couldn't help but put a smile on his face as if he and the girl were sharing an inside joke, too. "I must say, I'm a little disappointed you're not dressed as a unicorn."

He started to walk around the ball, making sure Thora matched up with his pace as he proceeded to survey the event. Royce does love parties, very much so.

Nieve & Hunter.

Attending the ball with Hunter brought her back memories of high school, when Hunter took her to the private school's prom when her boyfriend of that time dumped her only days before their junior prom. She had had such a fantastic time with Hunter that night, and she knew tonight was going to be no different. She smiled up at him, this time not having to lift her chin so much thanks to the heels she as wearing, and squeezed his arm. "We're going to enjoy this night," she told him. No that there was even a doubt about it. She had promised him she would make sure he didn't hate the night and that was what she was going to do. They would dance, they would drink, and the could possible even get a little drunk, who knows? But at the end of the night they'd be both smiling. Nieve would make sure of that.

"What shall we do first? Drinks or a dance?" It really didn't matter which one he chose because they would be doing both, dancing in particular. Nieve really enjoyed dancing with Hunter.

It was amazing how much they thought alike- it reminded him of junior prom, as well. The one where Luca swept in and, well, did what Luca always did to Hunter and ruined that special ending he was hoping for. No kisses for him that night. And then his best friend and the guy who was always that much better than him started dating. Fun. Oh well, this time it was not going to be like that because he was determined to hide behind his absolutely gorgeous partner in this fancy big to-do. He hated the fact that the aquarium wanted some of staff, the real staff, to attend as well. He looked down at her, though not as much as he normally had to, and smirked under his wolf mask and nodded. "Oh, I have no doubt about that."

The room was pretty well decorated, he liked it better than the year before, that was for sure. Then again, it was also not hard. He had not been a fan of the last color scheme and was glad he was only dropping people off and picking them up. When Nieve asked what they were going to do first, he shrugged a little. "I think we'll save combining the two until later in the night. Maybe a drink and check out the table with food? I know you love your food," he teased, offering his arm to her.

Nieve grinned and lightly tapped the nose of his mask. "I like it. You look very handsome tonight." Not that he didn't look handsome all the time. He did. Hunter was a very handsome guy, and more than once had Nieve found herself staring at him and thinking about him in ways that she shouldn't.

She shook her head lightly and smiled, taking his arm and squeezing it a little. "You know me too well it's scary sometimes," she joked, chuckling softly. But he did know her well. He knew her probably better than she knew herself. And yes, Nieve loved her food. For being such a small girl, she could eat almost her own weight and still feel fine. "But I still wanna dance with you, you're not getting away."

"When don't I," he asked with false confidence. Sure he was not ugly, but he was never thought of as the show-stopper. Or so he thought. The football guys got the attention. He was the science kid who was more interested in the water. He was oblivious to most of the attention people gave him, regardless, especially when it was Nieve. As far as he knew, there were always mosquitoes and stuff on him when she was around. Odd.

"Almost two decades will do that," he told her with a smirk. Years had taught him a lot about her, to the point where it really was scary, but he liked it all the same. It was nice to see that little had changed over the years, too. Then again, he loved to eat as much as she did, which made their time together look more like a teenage boy party than two friends. "You'll get your dances, I promise," he told her with a smirk. "I just need some liquid courage before heading out there."

"Never," she replied with a smile. Regardless of her having feelings she shouldn't have whenever he took his shirt off, Nieve had always thought Hunter was a very handsome guy, which is why she never understood why he didn't date that much. Girls were crazy about him! Sure when he smelled of fish he wasn't that attractive, but when he cleaned up he looked very good -- though she never minded the smell when she went to visit him at work.

"Almost 20 years? My God, we're old," she laughed. It didn't seem like that long, though. She still remembered the first time they met at the park like it was yesterday. She was sure things had changed over the years, but to her they were changes for the better. "Alright. Just don't get too drunk because I can't carry you to the car. You're too big," she teased lightly.

Lana had not been planning on attending the ball. She found them stupid and a waste of time and money. Both of which she did not feel like wasting on a night around the riches of society staring at her. She had important things to do, like drink her own alcohol, listen to her own music and then bug her brother. That was what she thought, until Nico came over, begging her to go to the ball with him because he was being forced to go. And he already had a dress for her. Lana didn't bother wondering how her brother knew the right size, she just could not stand seeing him look so exasperated and flustered. Neither twin wanted to go, but it looked like that was yet another thing Fate didn't care about. She rolled her eyes and told him she would be ready in a half hour.

And forty five minutes later, the pair was off to the ball. She hated dressing up for no reason, but she couldn't say no to her brother. So she would suffer this with him. She knew he did not want to be there, either. She was used to feeling a bit weird with this group of people around her. Anyone who had ever seen her before would know it was her with her tattoos alone, so she did not like wearing the mask. Nico had already given her "the look" the first few times she fussed with it. "So, it's an open bar, yes?" she asked, knowing the only thing that would make this worthwhile is being drunk.

This was the last place that Nico wanted to be. His boss, however, had different plans. Apparently, because he didn't feel like going, it made sense for him to make Nico go in his place, to represent the business and keep an eye on the two customized computers they had donated for the silent auction. Considering Nico had built both of the machines himself, he wasn't looking forward to them going to dumb, rich, housewife who spent too much money on fake tans and did nothing but play Farmville.

He was glad that his sister had agreed to come with him. When his boss had shoved the tickets into his hand and told him he was going, Nico had worried that Lana wouldn't agree. He figured, though, if he showed up with a dress and mask for her to wear, she couldn't really say no. He'd had to stop off and get a suitable outfit for himself, since he never really wore this fancy crap. He sighed a little at Lana, but nodded anyway. He had been quite relieved to find out it there was an open bar himself. "Yes, thank god."

Really, he was lucky Lana loved him more than anything. She hated people. She hated rich people. She hated watching rich people throw around their money because they could. It infuriated her and she grumbled knowing that they all end up in the morgue with her working on them at the end of the day. Why these people were privileged and her family was not, she would never know. All she did now was that if anyone was too good to be here with them, it was her brother. His hard work was too good for some rich bitch who would not even need be able to appreciate it.

Lana had to say, her brother did look sharp. Granted, she was not at all blind to the fact that he was always handsome, even if he scowled all the time. The thing was, he never really dressed up. Ever. Then again, neither did she. At least it was a long dress so she could wear her boots. She smirked and looked over at him. "Well, it'd be a shame if we did not get a chance to enjoy it, now would it?" She nudged him toward the bar. "Maybe some girl will try and steal you away. Wouldn't that be cute?"

He was lucky, and he knew it. There were about a thousand things he could think of that he would rather be doing. Getting a root canal was on that list, as was actually being at work. Instead, however, he was here, being forced to 'rub elbows' with people that tended to look down on him and his sister because of their upbringing. Like it was there fault, and there was something they could have done to change things.

It was nice to see his sister wearing something other than her work clothes, or jeans. They never had much of an excuse to dress up like this, so Nico would have to commit this sight to memory. "A terrible shame." He followed her nudging and headed towards the bar. He huffed a little at her comment. "Don't be ridiculous, Lana."

They had no ability to control their life growing up. All things considered, the pair came out far better than most who were even slightly privileged. She was proud of that. If no one else could, she would have to be the one to make sure her brother knew he was a great guy. Neither of them were smiles and cupcakes, but all things considered, they could be worse off. Regardless, they were both very successful on their own, even if she made a point to turn a blind eye to how her brother was able to afford some of the shit he got her.

No, they did not dress up much. She did not like to wear over-the-top gowns. She did not know how many of her jeans were still in one piece, come to think of it. And she lived out of boots and converse. Of course, she had already made a memory of this-in case she ever had to tease him about. She smirked and followed him to the bar, knowing that this was at least the best part of the night. She did want to see him with someone some day, even if she would only admit to herself that she was afraid that meant he would leave her for good. "Come on, mister macho man like you will catch someone's attention." Lana gave a small laugh. She liked to tease her brother because he seemed so oblivious to the hoards of women who looked at him and pined over him.

Mica Danvers was surprised that her father let her come to the ball this year. He was usually so very against her doing anything that wasn't swim team, or gymnastics, or track, even if it was just for an evening. She knew that he just wanted to keep her focused, so she could get into a good school and all, but she wished desperately that she could have some of the freedoms that the other people her age had.

The Gallery had given her a ticket to go, since they had donated a couple of her paintings for the silent auction. They felt it was only fair, since she wouldn't really be receiving any of the proceeds from the sales. It didn't bother Mica, though. The money would go to benefit the schools, and she couldn't think of a worthier cause. She knew a lot of schools throughout the country were losing their art and music programs, and even some of their sports. She didn't want to see that happen to her school.

Somehow, she managed to give her father the slip. She wanted to go see what else was up for auction, and maybe even bid on a few things herself. She had quite a bit of money set aside thanks to her art sales from the gallery, and she wanted to spend it on something worth while. As she browsed the rows of items, her eyes fell on one of her paintings. She remembered it fondly; it was based off of a photograph her father had taken of one of her sisters, walking along the water's edge on the beach, her hair blowing elegantly in the wind and her sandals in her hand. Her eyes scanned the list of bidders, and was surprised to see how high the amounts were. She smirked a little when she saw that the highest bidder was her father.

Leo Had been attended the annual ball for years, and this year was no different. He enjoyed the music, the food, and specially the auction. His mother was the one that got him interested in it, and now it had become a tradition between the two of them. He tried to at least bring one thing home in every Ball; first because he loved art, and second because he knew the money went to a very good cause. The school needed the money so they wouldn't have to cut the art and music programe -- and so he wouldn't lose his job.

Leo had been walking around the room for a while, checking all the items and then going back to bid on the few he was interested in. One of them was a painting of a girl walking along the shore. There was something very beautiful in that painting; the brush strokes, the colors the artist chose... Yes, he wanted that painting.

"Beautiful, isn't it?" he said as he approached the painting and saw a beautiful redhead looking at it too. His eyes quickly scanned the list and he added his name with a bid that topped the highest bidder. He wasn't the richest person there, but he was a very good saver and always saved money to spend of the auction each year. If the piece was unique or beautiful enough, it was worth every penny he spent on it. And this one was. "I love the colors the artist chose and how he or she made them harmonize so perfectly with the brush strokes."

The voice behind her suddenly startled her a little, and Mica gave a little jump. Realizing how silly she probably seemed, she gave a slight laugh. "Yes, it is rather beautiful." She gave the painting another glance and moved out of his way so he could add his name to the list of bidders.

She could feel her cheeks growing slightly red beneath her mask, and was glad that he could not see it. Not many people outside the gallery knew that the paintings were hers. She never signed them with her real name, and the gallery owners would never rat her out. "There is quite a bit of emotion in this painting. I feel like there's a sense of longing here."

She wasn't joking, either. There was a sense of longing from the artist; a longing for a life free of the restrictions her father put on her. "So, Mr -" She glanced down at the bidders sheet to get his name. "Franklin, you seem to know a bit about art."

Leo looked at her as she spoke, and then his eyes moved to the painting. He studied it and nodded after a few moments. "Yes, you are very right. Freedom. The artist wants to show us this is where she or he wants to be. I feel this place gives the artist some calmness, there's barely any pression in the brush strokes."

He smiled and chuckled. "Well, I should. I'm the Art teacher at Newport high school. I would have to rethink my job if I didn't know about art." And it was certainly nice to be able to speak to someone who also knew about art. "And you seem to know a bit about art, Miss..." he hoped he'd get her name as he would like to continue the conversation and it was a little strange when you didn't know the name of the person you were speaking to.

She let out a little sigh. "Yes. Freedom." He was far too right. She would give anything to be free like her oldest sister. It was an impossible dream, though.

Mica raised her eyebrow slightly. So this was the new art teacher. He seemed kind, and he definitely knew what he was talking about. Mica wasn't enrolled in the classes, but she'd heard things about their previous teacher that left much to be desired. "Danvers." She said, tucking her hair behind her ear. "I love art. It's a beautiful form of expression."
