Letter from Emmeline Wilkes to her cousin Endymion Dashwood, 17 Sept 1942...
In reply to his previous letter, written on the parchment he sent her which is warded so that only he can read it:
Dear Endymion,
Mother has been alternating between looking like the cat who caught the canary and the canary itself. I don't know what you told her, but I approve. She didn't even object when I picked dance for my extra subject instead of tennis. Alas, chemistry is not one of the options for my year but I am quite certain that with your help I could do interesting things with cookery.
I'm sure you were very heroic during the siege. Just don't make too much of a habit of it - it can be rather dangerous, you know, and I'd miss you terribly.
Love, Emmy
