Letter from Rosalind Clutterbuck to Jerome Device, 17 September 1942...
Well warded and sealed, in reply to his earlier letter:
Dear Jerome,
It’s always good to hear from you. I may just do that—write to Thecla, that is, and see how she’s doing. I’ll pass your congratulations on to Yvon as soon as I see him again. He and Alessio have moved into the Leffoy townhouse on Widdershins Court, or rather, they are in the process of moving.
I just might take you up on that other offer too. This place could use a higher class of drama. Although I do have the most entertaining thing to tell you.
Corinne Allison met someone named Raphael Trevelyan over the weekend. I’m suspicious, aren’t you? Is that really the name of one of Lanval’s horrid cousins? The uncle who died and left everything to his son and the awful second wife and her daughter who do séances? I’m never sure how that story goes. Next time one of us sees Madoc or Lanval, we should ask them about it. That can’t be right, can it? It’s got to be the other side of the family, too. None of the Trevelyans in the direct line ever has a Christian “Christian name.”
I’ve always wondered why Thecla never made friends with Tristan. Of course Tristan is in Pelby which is humorous in and of itself. And there’s really no point in wondering anyway—Aunt Dorothy used to make noises like that about Madoc and me, and I hadn’t the heart to tell her that Madoc always did prefer you, at least by the time the two of us were of an age to be as interesting as we were interested.
