Letter from Lizzie Loveday to her daughter Kathleen, dated 17 September 1942, by arcane post
Moderately well warded, sealed to Loveday family members
My darling baby,
I am so so sorry to do this to you, but we don't have any choice. Your Uncle Isaac may not have told you the full story about Bill, but it is part of the curse on our family that your father always suspected. Bill was very very sick and it's going to happen again and again until this thing between your father's family and the Leffoys is settled. And no doubt they will want something from all of us yet, but apparently it is clear to Dr Wilkes at the hospital that we will have to pledge you to Florian Leffoy: it will take more blood from us if it cannot have our lives in any other way and this is the other way.
So you have to do it. I will do everything I can to make this work for you. That's my brave girl,
Love,
Mummy
