Owl from Nicodemo Malaspina to his daughter Valeria Malaspina, dated 17 September 1942...
Warded, blood-sealed, and written in Italian:
Dear Valeria,
We should've discussed your cover before you left, and it was remiss of us to forget. However, the story you've worked out is excellent, and it seems wholly, entirely believable. People would much rather believe you did something unpleasant but noble in order to get out of Italy than having done it through unknowing accident. Stories of sacrifice and secrecy in wartime are always well received, and you've hit that square on the head.
Regardless, we will stick to the version you've settled on, absolutely, and we'll do our level best to make this thing come out for the best for you if it does hit the papers. I'm fairly sure that will depend on if anything more interesting comes along, so we'll just have to see. I'm very, very proud of you, Valeria. You're handling all of this with poise and you've found the best spin possible for everything that's happened. That keen cleverness will serve you well in Avalon.
Don't hesitate to write if there is anything you need, and I look forward to hearing about your accomplishments there. I know this is not at all the kind of schooling you're used to, and you probably won't enjoy it very much, but I'm sure you'll find some use for it.
Yours,
your father
P.S: Also, Dracaena says--forgive the paraphrasing, but--she loves you, she's proud of you, best regards and the same to your brothers and sisters.
