Owl from Juliana Malfoy to Michel Rosenthal, dated 15 September 1942...
Strongly warded and sealed, in reply to his owl:
Dear Michel (since that is how you signed yourself),
I understand. I just wish I’d known. I did some stupid things when I thought you were dead. Actually I’m fairly sure you have more than one of my ribbons, I always lost more in your lessons than in anyone else’s. But it’s all right for you to keep them, I don’t need them any more. I’m too old to wear my hair like that even by your mother’s standards. (I still remember when she made me wash the rouge off my face!)
Anyhow, be careful, there’s no-one else in the world I’d trust with those. Not even Sevvie. Assuming we’re ever reunited and live like sisters again, who knows when she may feel the need to jinx me over something stupid! I’m sure you know exactly what I mean. We were very put-upon once upon a time, do you remember? Vincent and she were so awful together sometimes! She asked me once how I would feel if she married him and made us brother and sister. This was when I pointed out that I was actually her cousin not her sister, and that there wasn’t a power on earth that could make me your sister! (Don’t think I don’t care for you enough! I care for you just as much as I would a brother, possibly more—but I do not really think of you as one, I don’t know why but I just can’t—perhaps because you were my teacher so long, which is funny because you were hers just as long.) She laughed at me for weeks. Mean old Sevvie. I miss her so.
Maybe almost as much as I miss you. Don’t ever learn to spell, you’ll make me cry.
Devotedly,
Liane
PS: Domitian is dead to me.
