Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Who: Victoire, the bartender at Le Moulin Noir, and anyone involved in the Resistance
Where: Le Moulin Noir
What: Victoire has heard of the Resistance at Fancy's place and is more than willing to join.
When: July 7, late.

As Victoire moved through the underground passage toward Le Moulin Noir, her thoughts were not on which turn to take and which ones led the wrong way -- she knew this path practically by heart, her feet seeming to move of their own accord as if they recognized a familiar trail. Instead, the redhead's mind was swirling furiously with what she had been told today. A Resistance, someone had whispered to her during her cigarette break. The words had been ringing in her ears since. Along with them came the images of Yuri, somewhere she didn't know or dead. Her husband, the handsome bespectacled Russian who had loved her piano playing and his wife. Part of Victoire wanted to believe that Yuri had escaped the Nazis who had taken him away and that he was hiding in Le Moulin Noir, the genius behind the Resistance Movement. She could almost see him sitting at a table near the back of the club, his face clouded by cigarette smoke, waiting for the day that Victoire would turn up. Because he knows that she would.

The ramifications of getting caught were huge. But that didn't bother little V. No, she was more than willing to lay her life on the line to do something to fight for her missing or dead husband and for those men and women who were in similar situations. Her father was a soldier and so was she. Victoire didn't mind getting her hands dirty and she wasn't afraid of hard work. This Movement was something that she had been waiting for since the beginning of the German occupation. She knew Paris and its people and was convinced they would rise up together. She just didn't realize it would take this long.

Victoire was shaken from her thoughts as she finally reached the door of the club and gave the password. The man at the door recognized her, of course, but you always had to give the password. Once inside, she gave him a small smile before directing her gaze toward the back of the room. It was almost as if she couldn't help it -- she knew Yuri wouldn't be there, but she had to check. "Don't be an idiot," she thought as she moved toward the bar.

"Bonne nuit." She gave the bartender a grin before lighting up a cigarette. "Two things, mon cher -- a dry martini, and I was wondering about some cedar.." Victoire let her words trail off, knowing that this was the key word for getting information about the Resistance. The bartender gave a quick nod and mixed Victoire her drink.

"You'll want to talk to that one over there," the bartender growled lowly as he set the drink on the bar. Victoire turned her head to make sure she knew where she was being directed before thanking the bartender and placing her money next to her drink. She picked up the glass and took a few sips before walking toward a small table near the corner.

The man the bartender directed her to picked the darkest spot in the room, of course. He was hunched a little over a stiff drink. He wasn't normally one for alcohol- for one it did nothing to him because of his metabolism.

But he was hungry. The sickly sting of brandy was usually a good substitute during the rougher patches.

Victoire studied the hunched man for a moment before sitting in the chair across from him. She set her drink down, unsure of what to say. She didn't want to mention the word "resistance" unless he did first, so instead Victoire took another sip of her drink as she chose her words carefully.

"Hello," she started, keeping her voice quiet. "The bartender directed me over here.."

He looked up, the amber light accentuating his gaunt features. She certainly didn't look like the kind of person who would seek him out.

"Cedar?" he intoned in a voice that sounded like he'd put back more than a few shots of the stuff that sat in the glass in front of him.

The man in front of her looked a little worse for wear, but really she couldn't expect anything else given the state of things, especially not of a man who was involved with the Resistance.

"Yes," Victoire replied firmly, nodding a bit.

"Very well," he replied, leaning heavily back in his chair. It creaked as if it empathised with the gravity of their situation.

"You understand the danger? You know why you're getting into this?" He spoke as if she were stumbling down the rabbit hole.

"Of course," Victoire replied, her expression hard. She didn't know if the man talked like this to everyone if it was because she was a woman, but either way she wanted to show him that she could handle it. After all, she practically spent her entire adolescence on the street, giving her good instincts and a cool head.

"I'm willing to do whatever it takes. Believe me."

He held her gaze for several moments before breaking into a smile of contentment, of conspiracy. He could see the determination in her eyes

"I'm Oscar. I can put you in touch with the right people," he said eventually, raising his glass as a toast, "Welcome to the fold."

Victoire was slightly taken aback by his sudden change in mood, but felt a wave of relief wash over her: she was in. "Victoire," she replied. "And let us hope that we shall have victory as well." The woman raised her glass as well, clinking it lightly against his. "Thank you for the welcome."

Vito nodded at the bartender and purchased a bottle of something dusty and Italian. He and the bartender spoke quietly, and Vito nodded and headed to where Oscar and Victoire sat.

"Good evening ... mind some company?" Vito said, and held up the wine bottle. "Good vintage, hints of raisin and cedar."

Victoire looked up at the new man, unsure of who he was. Safe? Her eyes darted toward Oscar, trying to gauge his reaction.

"Good evening," she replied, giving a small smile. No need to be rude, at any rate. She decided to wait for Oscar to accept the invitation; he would know if it would be okay.

Vito nodded amiably to Victoire, and to Oscar as well.

Once Oscar had confirmed that the newcomers were indeed safe to talk to, Victoire warmed up almost immediately. "I'm Victoire," she said to Vito, having never met him before. She moved over to make room for him to pull up a chair and sit with them.

Vito settled and smiled at Victoire. "Good evening," he answered her. "I'm Vittorio. Vito, to my friends. A pleasure to meet you, mademoiselle. We practically share a name."

"The pleasure's mine," Victoire replied. "And perhaps our similar names are a sign of good luck -- Vito and Victoire working for a free France." She raised her glass in a small toast for the third time that evening. "What brings you to Paris, Vito?"

Jackie headed over to the table after her set was over. She smiled to everyone, and was glad to see someone there she hadn't seen in a while.

"It's good to see all of you. Hi, Victorie... I've been keeping that music around for you."

"We have a new friend," Oscar says simply to the newcomers, before sinking slightly back into the gloom.

With this Victoire relaxed. She remembered Jackie from a brief encounter at Le Moulin Noir. Smiling, she moved her chair over to make room for the two newly arrived companions.

"Hello," she said again. "Of course I'd love the music," she replied to Jackie, nodding. To Vito, she held out her hand and said, "I'm Victoire. Lovely to meet you."

"I'll bring it to you after my next set." Jackie glanced towards the stage "It's nice to have you join us."

"Lovely." Victoire smiled. She enjoyed listening to Jackie sing; she had ever since the woman had shown up at the club. There was something different about her voice. Victoire didn't know if it was the Southern accent or the English lyrics, but for some reason her voice just seemed so soulful. Victoire wished she could sound like that.

"I'm thankful for the work you have all been doing, and I'm glad to be a part of it." She took a sip of her drink and a long drag on her cigarette before grinning through the smoke.

"There's a lot more work yet." Jackie said "But we've got victory on our side now, so things are looking good, right?"

Yes, it was a terrible pun, but Jackie was a singer, not a comedian.

Victoire gave a small chuckle and smiled at the other woman. "Hopefully you're right." She offered Jackie a cigarette out of her dented and scratched silver case.
