Sorry for my unannounced absence - things have been pretty stressful for Aus and I of late with being out of work and having poor finances. I'm trying to get back into playing and posting now though- I hope we can get things flowing again in the game.

German surnames from Müller to Keller

The list that follows ranks the 50 most common family names in Germany. It was produced by surveying names found in German telephone books. Attached is the English meaning for each name. The most common German surname is Müller, which means "miller" - it points to their actual occupation. Keller on the other hand belongs to a class of names derived from WHERE someone worked, in this case, possibly a Ratskeller (cellar pub/restaurant) or Weinkeller (wine cellar). Names and their sources can be a tricky thing as they go so far back in Europe. On this list you find likely meanings/orgins of the most common ones.

Generally speaking, most names were based on

- occupations/social status
- location
- a person's physical characteristics

NOTE: German names that include "von" may indicate a member of (former) nobility, like the French "de" or the Dutch "van". At certain times and places, it was illegal for anyone who was not a member of aristocracy to use "von" before their family name. Therefore: Chances are that the person who has it in their name now was somehow related to this social class. (In the Middle Ages the "von" particle was still a common part of names and was widely used also by commoners, e.g. "Hans von Duisburg" meant Hans from [the city of] Duisburg.)

Sorry for my slowness in posting - I had food poisoning, which believe me was NON-fun.

I might not be in full force for another two weeks - I'm in the process of moving.  But I'm BACK.

I'm sorry I said I was back before and then did nothing; I'd thought, at the time, that I'd managed to glue my life back together, but I was immediately hit by a new and different whammy that knocked it all to pieces again.  But things are looking brighter; when there are grey skies, we don't mind grey skies, you make them blue, sonny boy. 

AIM's not been working for me lately, so your best bet is to reply to me here or email me: chikkiboo@sbcglobal.net.  One somewhat shopworn double agent reporting back for duty, ma coneguda.  Tail between legs, perhaps; a bit the worse for wear, perhaps; but in good faith, or at least as much good faith as anyone can expect from a double agent.

Mea culpa mea culpa! I know I've been gone for ages -- really, not much of an excuse except work and life getting in the way.

Anyway, I'm back and trying to be a billion times more active than I have been in the past few weeks. I've got little Victoire who just joined up in the Resistance, so those of you involved in that will probably be meeting her for the first time or seeing her again if they've already met. Plus Lucy here has gotten out of her funk and is out and about looking for some stories!

Jackie-mun: I owe you the biggest apology of all, I feel, for making plans for a thread and then being a terrible player and not getting it done. If you're still interested in doing a Victoire/Jackie thread and possible budding friendship, I am at your whim. *grovels some more*

That being said, I WILL be going away for a few days starting next weekend. I may be able to sneak online during Saturday or Sunday for a few minutes, but from Monday-Thursday I will be camping in the great outdoors, which means no computer access for me. So just a heads up. =)

Hey everyone - the monthly state of the world post is up in the IC community, and I want to take care of a little business here in the OOC.

Currently, I am in three threads that seem pretty important to finish, though they are in a couple cases in particular a bit older. I apologize for any delays on my part. I need to check in more frequently, as I don't always get the emails that tell me I've been tagged, and I've run into IJ being down a few times, too, in recent weeks, but mostly, I just need to really get on the ball, and I know it.

I tend to be online late Friday and Saturday nights (toward midnight) quite regularly, and, less predictably, but with reasonable frequency, throughout the rest of the week. I'm on as Moniquedelacroix@aol.com in IM, and if you see me on, at most times, I'd be thrilled to do a bit of posting (any time I'm able, frankly. There are a few occasions when I may be otherwise engaged, as I also work online, but I can ALWAYS say hi, and try to work out a time, or something), so that we can get threads moving at a better pace.

Anyway, I just wanted to also say that I think you all are pretty terrific, and that I really am enjoying these posts.
