Jill meets Marc
The departure lounge on the Ark Royal was nearly empty of people as Jilleen sat in one of the leather chairs to wait for the next shuttle to the resort liner. It was late in the day according to the clock hanging over the gate door marked with the number 3. She had come to the Ark Royal unintentionally after she missed the cargo shuttle back to Shangri-la after her last session. Instead of waiting till early morning to take the next direct cargo shuttle, she hopped on one that had numerous stops, the last being to the Ark Royal. She had not been sure about the timetable of the civilian shuttle routes, but the Ark Royal was one of the  hub ships.

What she had not counted on was on shuttle cancellations because of the impending departure of the Avalon and the other ships that would take part in the salvage operation.  It indirectly caused a disruption in the time tables. The ticket agent was certain that the last schedule shuttle to Shangri-la from Ark Royal was not cancelled or delayed, it would only be a couple of hours.

Jilleen occupied her time by writing in a notebook she purchased at the small shop near the lounge. She had decided to give writing a try to manage her feelings and memories. She made a few attempts, but the writing was not working out at the moment. She had nothing but a few thoughts written down inside the notebook.

She looked over toward the entrance when she heard the automatic glass doors slide open as someone else came into the lounge.

"So anyway, your regulator should stay fixed after this. If problems start back up, call me and I'll make another trip over." Marcus shook the hand of the Ark Royal's Chief Engineer at the entrance to the lounge and then stepped through. He'd owed the man a favor since the other engineer had helped out with the filtration system rebuild in the Tropical Dome back on Shangri-La.

He noticed the woman sitting in the waiting area, but paid her little attention as he went to the ticket desk and handed in his voucher for the trip back to Shangri-La.

If necessary they would have sent a shuttle to get him, but he preferred to take regular transport when possible.

His accent caught Jilleen’s attention. She would guess that the man who was as at the ticket desk was originally from Ostia, a province of Aerilon. She watched him at the desk as he purchased his ticket.

She did not recognize him, she usually would have recalled a good looking fellow from Aerilon. It was impossible to have meet everybody in the fleet in 3 years. Her eyes turned away when he finished his business at the desk, and she returned to scribble nonsense in her note book again.

Marcus finished his business at the ticket counter and moved over to the seating area. His eyes hadn't missed the pretty blonde sitting there, but he'd just spent the last six hours working in Ark Royal's Engine Room and wasn't feeling particularly chatty. Besides, she was busy scribbling in her notebook about something.

3 years

It was all she could manage to write between the time she started again and when the gentleman took a seat near by her. She looked over his way. “Ostia right?” she asked him.

Once she had his attention. “I’d noticed your accent.” Her lips formed a thin smile. “I grew up in Casperon, and Whidbey Valley.”

"I can tell," Marcus nodded. The woman's accent was uppercrust Aerilon all the way. Marcus hadn't had a lot of dealings with the political elite growing up. His family had been middle to working class and never showed much interest in politics.

He offered a hand. "Marcus Valerius."

Jilleen reached over with a smile and shook his hand. “Marcus, its good to meet you. My name is Jilleen Simmons.” In this particular setting, there was no need for her to give her military rank. It was nice opportunity to speak to someone about normal things. She let go of his hand but kept her eyes on Marcus.

“Its always a pleasure to meet someone new from Aerilon. Are you going to the Shangri-la for a visit? If you do not mind me asking.” Her eyes sparkled as her spirits seem to lift having an opportunity to speak with someone from her home colony. It was a welcomed diversion from her notebook.

He shook his head and chuckled. "No, I work there. I'm her chief engineer, I was over here for a consulting job that turned into a little more hands on than I'd intended."

“Don’t you hate that? Plans never turned out the way they are written.” She shook her head knowing too well how plans she had written were easily discarded because of real-time changes.

“Marcus, I must say your crew has done an excellent job keeping her in top shape. I think people would have gone insane from cabin fever if we didn’t have those fantastic domes to escape to once in a while.”

Her eyes caught a glimpse of the burn scar on his left hand. She wondered how that might have happened.

It had taken him a few minutes to place the name of Simmons as belonging to the fleet officer that had upset Anika so badly. Strange, she didn't look like a raving lunatic.

His expression cooled a bit. "We've worked hard to keep the ship in good condition, but it's been difficult the past year or so. You wouldn't happen to be Major Simmons of the Avalon would you?"

She noticed a slight change in his expression after his question.

“Yes. I’m Major Simmons from Avalon.” She paused for a beat and then with some hesitation. “Something I can help with?” She had hoped that her association with the military would not come up.
