Mission Briefing - The Black Hydras
Captain Tarix had a reputation for strict authoritarianism and discispline, well beyond bein ga stickler for dress code. She disliked non-regulation tactics and spontaneous bursts of enthusiasm, although, in private, admit that such things possibly had their place, every now and then. Even so, even she seemed to be acting a little more serious than usual, as her squadron was convened for the briefing.

"Everyone here? Good... I'm sure you've all heard the Admiral's speech. Seems it's time you be informed what's so important to potentially risk half our military assets, if not more."

Cole offered his trademark cocky smile as he sat in the front row of the briefing room. He was wearing his flight suit and had a clipboard in one hand while he twirled a pen between his fingers with the other.

"I thought that's what Black Hydras did, Captain - risked our assets!" he called out with a slight smirk at his simple pun.

He knew it would probably get little more than a scowl from Tarix, but still he had to stave the tension off somehow. If this was big enough to risk half the military resources of the fleet, it was bigger than him, her, or the Hydras. For the Admiral to get on the comm like that, Cole recognized how life-or-death things had to be - there was just no way anyone was going to see him sweat.

His suspicions were right. Vosca was none too impressed. Nonetheless, it was difficult to describe what one of her looks could convey. She just had a... Way of making someone feel insignificant. Even so, just this once, she would let it slide without passing comment. Her responding silence was enough.

"The Black Hydras follow orders to the letter and kill the enemy... Anything less and you should have joined the Marines."

Clarifying matters with a measure of black humour at least proved Tarix did not find the concept of a joke as alien as her reputation might suggest. Even so, this was serious business. If they had good fortune, things would jsut be boring. If they did not, then it might bea percentage game of how many would survive.

"Our mission is to provide covering escort for a strategic insertion of the following targets," she continued, clicking the first graphic up on the board. A representation of old-style battlestar and basestar, merged together like the victims of some ill-advised mating ritual. "This is technology harking back to the first machine war. As such, we have good estimates of what the Cylon ship's layout is likely to be. Estimates report the two collided immediately before a random FTL. There'll be no knowing what's awake or dead. The only guarantee is, if anything wakes up, it won't be human. Not after all this time. To that end, we might be called upon to provide orbital bombardment support or, possibly, to engage flying hostiles. I want you to mark the known weapons emplacements on both ships... The fleet needs to break them up and use the raw materials. Marines will be inserted to sweep through both structures, but if we're calle dupon to neutralise any activated weapon systems, you need to know where to hit."

Cole smirked and shook his head before returning to business. He scrutinized the images of the basestar, taking particular note of the weapon emplacements as Capt. Tarix mentioned them. His eyes absorbed images of the maps, charts and schematics of the archaic catastrophe. Despite his own casual demeanor, the seriousness in his eyes showed that he knew how much was at stake.
