Evening on SL
Philo's eyes were on the ceiling and on his journal, alternately.

The journal was a silly habit. One he'd adopted in med school, mainly to make himself seem more attractive to Mary-Claire, who now in all likelihood lay dead at the bottom of a lake or some such. It didn't matter. His quips and insights hadn't faded with her, but they had faded. He thought often that they had faded with Colette. It was an easy answer, and one to which he clung like driftwood in a storm. It simplified things. Made it all cleaner.

Still, there was a time to reflect, and a time to act. This was neither, but Philo felt it would be in his best interest to leave. Get out. He lived on the most varied ship in the fleet (or so the rumor was. He hadn't been on another) and it was only right he should see it. He stood, tucked the journal into his desk drawer, and stepped into the corridor.

All corridors led to the biodomes, and he could be certain that if he walked along them that was where he would come to. He had no intention of coming out at the biodome though. He veered off, looking for solace in a bottle and in conversation. He made his way through beautifully appointed corridors (Bethany's doing, no doubt) and past lovingly arranged bits of flora (Bethany's doing, no doubt). When Philo finally made his way into his favorite haunt--the lights low, the ambrosia plentiful--he was glad to see his friend manning the bar.

"Hello, Bethany," he said with a smile, not as forced as it could have been, and sidled up to take a seat. "You're looking lovely as always. Where's your staff? You are entirely too beautiful to have to deal with these ruffians."

Bethany laughed as she accepted Philo's compliment, holding out a hand to him as she explained. "One of the girls has just found out she's pregnant, and that's what's been causing her all her upset tummies, so I sent her home as soon as she started to turn green and I'm just filling in till her replacement has had time to get themselves ready and here! And have you heard? Dani will be arriving tomorrow, from Avalon. I have her a cabin near ours and a wheelchair that I will make sure she uses."

She had enjoyed getting the cabin ready for Dani, stocking it with lots of lovely surprises specially for their pregnant friend. From the silk sheets to the aromatherapy oils and scented candles, along with the special moisturiser to ensure the mother-to-be would be saved any stretch marks. The thing she was most proud of was the robe she'd had specially made, the bodice of which had volumes of material that would enable her to feed using the specially concealed openings hidden in the pleats.

"When's her next appointment with you? Can't be too far away."

"Tomorrow," Philo supplied with a grin. "You've taken right good care of her. I have to say thank you." He adjusted his weight on his seat. "People like you make my job easier, Bethany. Thank you for everything you've done."

"Oh it's no bother!" she told him, waving a hand lightly. "I'll make sure she there on time. And in the meanwhile, what can I get you to drink?"

"Something sweet, dark, and highly alcoholic," Philo replied with a wide smile. Though he was by all appearances joking, there was something all too serious in the answer. "Thank you." With a glass in front of him he was far more sociable, even with a woman as pretty and as kind as Bethany.

"In that sort of a mood are we?" Bethany reached for a couple of different spirit bottles and soon had a glass in front of him, a mixture she thought would probably suit him in that sort of a mood. It would vary, and she enjoyed serving him on the rare times she was behind the bar, as she liked to try and match the drink with his mood.

"That sort of mood indeed," he replied lightly, and took a deep draught from the glass. "This is good, Bethany. Very good. If we were back on world I'd say you should market it, but here I believe you have quite a clinch on the market." Philo winked over the glass before setting it back down. "So. I hear your sister was detained onboard the Avalon." It was almost conversational.

She managed to keep her expression the same, despite the small wave of anger that skimmed through her. Anika had told her what had happened of course, but she felt there was something more than just that event that was causing her twin to be so angry, and she felt evasive, about what had happened.

"Yes, for what it seems was a total waste of time," she said, her twin's insistence on Bethany not taking it any further still grating a little on her but her word had been given, and it would not be broken. "I really don't understand what comes over some officers, and from what I know they seem to be rather dropping their standards with regard to their attitude to civilian personnel."

"Not surprising," Philo answered, and downed the remainder of his drink. "The wasting of time that is. It seems that our military can't seem to get its head on straight when dealing with anything. Her detainment was a travesty. It was absurd, and it was--as you say--a waste of time. Who's to say something like this won't happen again?"

"Precisely," she agreed, allowing her curtain of diplomatic elegance to be lifted for just a moment as she spoke to her friend. "One woud be forgiven for believing some of them carry an 'us and them' attitude and that anyone not a part of the military is automtically a 'them' and seemingly the enemy." She sighed, shaking her head for a moment before gathering herself again. "Still, they have a lot of responsibility on their shoulders, and I'm forever grateful they take their role as our guardians as well as they do."

"Still," said Philo, glaring not maliciously, but with an intensity not seen in his eyes since the fall of the colonies. "It is a responsibility. Not an entitlement. A responsibility they have irresponsibly shouldered. It would be good to see something come of the faith we've placed in them."

Seeing the expression in Philo's face surprised Bethany a little, the intensity mystifying her a little and sparking her concern for him. For all the years they'd known each other she'd never heard him speak much of his life before the exodus, his door to the past seeming to be tightly closed. In her years since that time she had met with, talked to, consoled and comforted countless numbers of individuals, and couples, offering an ear, and shoulder, or pair of arms to those who sought it. In some instances it had been a bed, where it had struck her deeply and the solace needed was for the individual to be reminded that indeed loving people still existed, even if loved ones no longer did.

"Indeed, darling, it is," she replied, her hand reaching over and gently patting his forearm. "And it's a heavy burden we all carry, not lessened by the simple lack of a military badge of responsibility."

"Yes," he responded, the muscles in his jaw tight. "We all do carry a burden. I only seek to see those in charge answer to someone else. Don't you, Bethany?" His eyebrow was an angular arch over liquid brown eyes.

She nodded slowly, trying to read the message in his words and eyes as she studied his face. "We all answer to someone, Philo, whether or not they're corporeal," she replied quietly. "Who do you answer to, darling?" she ventured?

"I answer to myself," he answered bitterly, then softened. "And to the memory of my beautiful daughter. I wish you could have known her." For a moment, his eyes misted up, then he shrugged off the emotion. Whether he believed in such fallacies as the Gods notwithstanding, he met her eyes with a cool nonchalance. "Who is going to stand for people like us? It's not right."

She didn't miss the look he had when he spoke of his daughter, albeit briefly. The quick shift away again, back to his regular nonchalance convinced her to let it lie for the moment. "Well being a democratic society we have the peoples' forum, our parliament, and its elected representatives," she stated simply, knowing it wasn't quite as simple as all that. The establishment of the government had given rise to a bit of unrest among some segments of the fleet, the concept one that many were unfamiliar with, and like most people when faced with change there was a lot of resistance. The use of the Marines had been a strongly debated issue when unrest had threatened to swamp some ships to the point of civil disturbances that threatened people's safety.

She tilted her head to the side and studied him for a long moment. "Have you ever considered running for one of the positions of representatve of Shangri-La?"

He laughed, and looked down at the robust styling of the bar. "Me? You've got to be kidding. There's plenty out there would do this fleet a better service than I." He looked up to meet her eye. "Though I appreciate your vote of confidence."

"Don't be so sure about that," she told him, leaning one elbow elegantly on the bar and resting her chin on her softly curled fingers. "People need someone who is passionate about their plight, and not in it for what attention it will get them. And that, Philo, is something I can't ever see you doing!"

"Getting attention, you mean?" He returned her look with a smile of his own, perhaps a bit more pensive than before. "Please, don't be so effusive in your flattery, Miss Jereldsen. It will go to my head, and there'll be no living with me."

A pause, and briefly he considered asking her for another drink. Something in him, however, said no, and he abandoned the idea. "No," he replied. "I can't see myself as a politician. But there is a shifting in the tides. A change is coming, mark my words..." He trailed off, and gave a halfhearted laugh. "Listen to me, spouting poetical nonsense. I suppose that I am seized by the sentimental."

She didn't answer immediately, studying him a little longer before inhaling softly and straightening up. "Who knows? I can't imagine the ones we were dealing with originally did, but from what I've heard these new ones? They're impossible to tell from us, regular humans." She sighed, and shook her head. "Seems strange doesn't it? Something created itself in the perfect likeness of us, yet despises us..."

"Not so strange. Supposedly we are in the likeness of the Lords of Kobol, but not a day goes by that I don't..." he trailed off, suddenly remembering decorum. Not for his sake, but for hers. She had a sterling reputation to maintain and he wasn't about to soil it with his own atheist ramblings.

"Strange indeed," he replied. "I would very much like to see one of these new human-looking Cylons. I suppose like everything else of consequence they are kept in secret on one of the battlestars."

"That's what I've heard, yes," she agreed, nodding as she thought about his earlier, cut-short comments about the gods. Her voice was gentle and caring, the man's pain was obvious, just not quite the source of it. She spoke to him softly, reasuringly.

"Philo, we didn't create ourselves, remember? We really didn't have any say in our fates. That's what makes us different to them. They chose to ... become us."

He sighed, and rubbed a fingertip through the puddle of condensation that had gathered at the base of his glass.

"Do you know why I became a neurosurgeon, Bethany?" He didn't wait for her answer, but continued, "Because my father was a neurosurgeon. No other reason. And yet...and yet the desire, the need got under my skin. It became a defining part of who I was. Who I am. I wanted to be a doctor, I still do--though my reasons now have changed."

He sighed again, and dried his fingers on his sleeve. "I think children become their parents quite by mistake sometimes. I don't know if it's a choice at all."

"It's the sins of the fathers," she replied with a soft laugh as she quoted the old saying, "repeated through the sons. I always wondered about that, and thought it rather intriguing it never referred to the daughters doing the same!" She gave him a small cheeky wink, clearly indicating the tease. "Though when I look at Anika at times I'm left to wonder!"

"Yes, well," he grinned. "Despite sex, I think we all manage to find ourselves in trouble from time to time. I am often amazed at your differences from your sister, though. It's really quite fascinating. From a purely neurological standpoint, there is nothing to suggest that...oh dear. I'm talking about work. I believe that's against some rule somewhere."

She smiled and listened to Philo talk about puzzles, wondering herself not for the first time whether he was ever likely to open up. "I only like puzzles when I've solved them and I have the full picture," she admitted conspirtorially. "Until then? Well, they're rather annoying! And none more than those where you just can't get any of the pieces to fit together!"

He laughed. "I agree. I'm not the man they need solving puzzles for this fleet, anyway. What about you, Bethany?" He raised his glass and smiled at her. "When are you going to run for the House, not that you don't have enough on your plate already?"

She laughed lightly, shaking her head before taking another sip from her glass. "As you just so aptly pointed out I have quite sufficient on my plate at the moment, and I wouldn't know which part of it to relinquish if I were to even consider such a path!" She had been asked, and what confirmed for her that it was definitely something she wasn't willing to even consider was the approaches had been from totally opposite sides of the floor. Her radius contacts was wide and she treated them all in an identical fashion, up to a point.

"I have enough crises to deal with here, on this ship alone, not to mention Anika's and my business interests and keeping an eye on those around the fleet! I will leave that sort of thing to Cedric and his team and remain happily here looking after them all!"

"Is the prime minister a friend of yours?" Philo's eyebrows shot up, and he leaned forward. "I think you're most certainly the most well-connected person in the fleet. It never ceases to amaze me." He shook his head, still smiling.

"Cedric? Yes, we've come to know each other well since... " The exodus. "... he's been leading parliament here on Shangri-La." There was no hesitation in her voice, the delivery smooth, but she was careful to avoid any direct reference to the events that led them all to now being where they were.

"I should introduce you two sometime, and you can let him know what you think!"

Philo laughed. "While it is an idea that I find morbidly fascinating, I doubt that the Prime Minister would want to hear anything I have to say."

He was being polite. He had a few things he wanted to ask Mr. Wyndom, but that was another story altogether. "Anyway. I apologize for boring you with my political diatribe. No doubt you have plenty of other things to consider, and I do not presume to think that I have anything of value to say on the matter."

Entering the lounge it became clear that business was relatively quiet, only half of the lounges that were scattered around the large room were occupied. The dance floor that was positioned toward the centre of the room was being used by only a dozen or so couples and the barstaff were well on top of collecting the empty glasses. It was a point she'd been making to her crews for at least the last 18 months. Glasses were not yet growing on trees and it was a lot easier to serve drinks in them if they were kept intact - which meant making sure they were collected before falling foul of a swinging elbow or careless swipe of a hand.

Bethany glanced up at Philo, at first a little surprised he hadn't at least even come to the bar out of curiosty, but quickly remembering Philo's preference for his own company most times she had seen or talked to him.

"Thank you," she told him happily as they made their way across to the bar where the head bartender was already waiting for Bethany having seen her enter the lounge. "Good evening, Misha," she smiled as they were greeted by the woman. "How are things this evening?" she asked, the other woman giving a quick rundown of an earlier incident involving a young couple who weren't particularly happy at the crew's gentle prompts they might like to take their 'interactions' to a more private location. "They've gone now, but it was only when Seth suggested it that they took any notice," she told Bethany with a roll of her eyes. Seth was enormous and one of the gentlest men Bethany knew but he had an affect on people that usually meant they didn't argue with him.

"Good, good, you did well," she told Misha, turning to Philo. "I'd like you to meet Dr Philo Zoticus, one of our esteemed medical practitioners and a gentleman who has never been to the 'Flight Lounge' before!" Misha greeted the doctor, a small hint of surprise and curiosity flickering across her face. "Welcome to the 'Flight Lounge', Doctor," she told him, indicating the bar with an incline of her head. "Can I get you something to drink?"

"Thank you, erm," he smiled nervously, the emotion tracing his face like a vapor trail. He laughed, even more anxiety evident than before, and ran a hair through his shock of dark brown hair.

"Yes, please, something, a whiskey or ambrosia, just..." he met Bethany's eye with an almost laughing gaze. "Just something. I highly trust you Miss...Misha. Or..." he blushed, anxious under the girl's eye, for whatever reason.

When she'd dashed off, Philo glanced over to Bethany. "Is this some kind of a joke?" he demanded, the good humor never fading from his voice.

"Joke?" Bethany's puzzlement was clear as she looked at Philo. "In what way?" She looked from him to Misha and back again. "I don't understand." And she really didn't, completely bewildered and not at all sure what Philo was referring to.

He laughed, halfhearted but honest, and ran a hand through his inky hair. "Ani," he said, using the nickname he'd heard her most often referred to with. "You're such a darling. You aren't trying to...what is it the children say these days? 'Hook me up?' I'd be extraordinarily scandalized!"

He laughed, but a large part of him hoped for assuaged doubts. If she told him he was being the fool he'd be embarrassed, but skulk easily back to his quarters.
