Saiyuki Gaiden (Shien/Nataku)
Title: The Battlefield Within
Author: GuiltyRed
Rating: R for dark themes
Warnings: hint of pseudo-shota (centuries-old, but looks like a child)
Word count: 355
Summary: Nataku, the War Prince, only looks like a child. He is centuries old, doomed to serve Heaven as its unwavering executioner. There is at least one in Heaven who believes that this façade and forced service are not in Nataku’s best interest.
Prompt: September 11 – #24. Saiyuki Gaiden, Shien/Nataku: Forbidden love – "Who will erase the ruthlessness hidden in innocent blood?" (Pablo Neruda)
You are so small, only a child to some eyes.
Am I the only one who sees the scars?
A true child would smell of lilacs and mud, milk and bruised grass. But you, Nataku, you smell of blood and steel, smoke and leather: a warrior’s scent. You carry the battlefield with you, unable to leave it behind when you finally crawl into your small, small bed.
I know this, because I hear you dreaming.
If it were allowed, I would hold you through those nights, the dark hours punctuated with your cries as your sacred duty erodes another day of innocence. I would hold you, but not as a child, for to do that would be to turn a blind eye to truth, and though my eyes are closed they have never been that blind.
No, I would hold you as a warrior, a wounded, brave heart covered in sinew and calluses. I would even dare to kiss you, to offer you whatever comfort you desired that I had in my power to provide.
Am I the only one who sees a man within the shell of a child?
Nataku, you are doomed to remain eternally small, eternally childlike in all but the most important way. Innocence has never been your birthright, my dear War Prince, but guarding you has ever been mine. Do you understand what that means? Have they left you that much of a child’s heart, to not recognize the assassin at your side?
I strongly doubt that. You must know as well as I that my purpose in guarding you is not to protect, but to anticipate, and so to strike you down the moment you show too much independence. It has been my duty through the cycles of time to keep the War Prince in line, in chains, though of all the ones who went before, you I would see free.
Sleep, my little love. Sleep, and know that day by day my heart speaks ever louder in treason.
I pray only that, when the time does come as it surely must, I am strong enough to hear it.
