Summary: Shera has her methods to deal with waiting.
I only do housework when he's gone. Somehow all that silence makes my hands itch for something to do, but I can't concentrate on my real work - microchips elude me, formulas swim around in my head like slippery little fish. So I resort to drudgery, tasks that don't take a lot of thinking.
The house is spotless and gleaming now, and I'm half-sprawled at the kitchen table, thoroughly exhausted. The air smells like clean linen and lemon - chemical lemon from the furniture polish, anyway. Somehow with all the dust gone, the colors in here seem brighter, warmer. It's times like this I see how lovely our little house truly is.
I want to mess it up again and start all over, because he's not home yet.
Then the door opens and the lemons are dashed away by engine grease and cigarettes, and I'm in his arms and he's murmuring gruffly in my ear. "About damn time I saw you again."
The house, I decide, will simply have to take care of itself for a while.
