Between the failed attempts at defending the egg and the search and destroy team not being particularly great at either thing, Rooster was doing horribly. They'd won the first challenge and beat Swan in a kickball; the team was used to operating at a certain level of excellence. Rooster wasn't just getting beat by Swan, they were amongst the bottom three teams. Mason Laughlin thought this was unacceptable. They still had a few days to go--five to be exact--before the end of the challenge, it was possible to turn things around. Mason was sure going to try his damndest to make it happen for his team. He was in charge of the Search and Destroy team so he threw all his effort into trying to pick up the slack for those team members that were letting the eggs get cracked. He wasn't about to get shown up by the egg that Devon broke on Monday. Mason had a particular interest in knocking Swan down a couple pegs. He kept track of who carried an egg what day to narrow down what people would be carrying eggs. As the week went on it got increasingly easier, thankfully. Once he found out who Swan's egg holder for the day was (Ethan Young), Mason set about putting together a plan. He kept an eye out for Ethan at breakfast and tailed him after exiting the cafeteria the long way around. He followed the boy back to the dorms, hanging back and doing his best to look inconspicuous. Mason arrived on the fourth floor a good ten minutes after Ethan did. He smiled to himself, proud of not getting caught by any of the Swans. He took a seat in the 4th floor lounge so that he wouldn't be easily seen when Ethan inevitably exited 4A for his first class. Waiting around was boring, but he had his phone so he could do some reading. Ethan had been up and about since six, thanks to Jack's new workout regimen. It was almost enough to make him regret the grilled cheese prank -- almost. He went to breakfast after their run, and he had just enough time to go back to his dorm and gather his things before Science, his first and only formal class of the day. Just his luck that he couldn't even go back for a shower and nap. On the other hand, it was lucky for him that Jack hadn't figured out he'd had Swan's egg while running, kept squirreled away in the pocket of a windbreaker he really didn't need to be wearing. He kept the windbreaker on even after he left his room again to head to the academic building, backpack hoisted over one shoulder. The egg made a small bulge in the pocket, and Ethan felt self-conscious of it, even as he tried to rationalize that his phone would have made a similar shape. Mason grinned when he saw Ethan walk past the lounge. The kid had unfortunate taste in wardrobe, but wearing a windbreaker in 100 degree heat was just plain strange. Mason slipped into the elevator just before the doors were about to close. He stood a few feet away from Ethan. "Wow. Almost missed it. That would've sucked." He took a breath, feigning like he ran from the other side of the hallway to catch the elevator. Mason looked over at Ethan, examining him with a quick flick of the eyes behind the sunglasses that he slipped on for protection against the hypnotist's eyes. Young had already used his powers on one of Mason's teammates, he didn't want to follow in Jack's grilled cheese-mongering ways. Mace noticed the telltale bulge in the front of Ethan's jacket. This should be easy. "Jeez. Aren't you dying? It's hella hot outside." Ethan tensed when he heard Mason's voice, and he glanced over and saw that he was wearing dark glasses. Nobody from Team Rooster aside from his roommate lived on his floor, which meant that he'd been followed, and it was all too easy for Mason to avoid eye contact. It must have been planned. The bottom of Ethan's stomach dropped. He'd be meeting up with other Swans later, but he needed them now. Javier might be able to catch the egg before Mason broke, and even Benjie, whose powers of suggestion weren't quite as reliable as his, at least didn't need to make eye contact before asking an attacker to halt. Alone, in this enclosed space, he was doomed. He stared at the elevator buttons, as if he could hypnotize them into making the doors open faster. He usually took the stairs. Why hadn't he taken the stairs? Ethan's hand lowered subconsciously, covering the pocket where he kept the egg, no doubt a useless gesture. "I was out real early when it was still a little chilly," he explained, praying his voice wouldn't crack and give him away. Anyway, it was kind of true. It had been below 70 degrees F (20 C) before the sun came up that morning. Still not quite windbreaker weather, but at least it hadn't been useless. All he'd wanted was something with zip pockets. "I just haven't changed yet." "Ahhh." The grin never left Mason's face. He'd felt good about this inevitable point he was about to make. They both knew that Mason was going to do something, but when, how? His eyes focused on the display, letting the pair know they had passed floor 3, then 2. Just before the doors open, Mason turned to look at Ethan again, more specifically the hand over the egg. He reached out with his telekinesis and pushed Ethan's hand against his pocket. Mason heard the egg crack and split and let Young's hand go as soon as it sat flush against his body, signaling that the egg was thoroughly broken. "You might want to do that, man," he said as the doors opened and Mason stepped out, leaving Ethan--and by extension Team Swan--to his mess. Ethan stood in shock for a moment. Of all the things he had expected Mason to do, pushing his body hadn't even been on the list. He sighed. Team Swan would be alright. They had a pretty healthy lead, and even if they didn't, it wasn't as though anybody on Swan was the type to hold a single lost point in the competition against him. A trip to the beach just wasn't worth the stress. That didn't mean Ethan wasn't irritated, though. Mason following him back to the dorms had been low. Ethan debated for a second whether he should say anything. The cracked bits of egg seeped through his jacket and onto his hand. He shook them off and called after Mason, in an uncharacteristic taunt, "That get you out of the negatives?" |
