So far, so good. It wasn't even as cold as usual, which was a nice change, even if it was still a little bit chillier than she'd hoped it would be. They had spent the last couple of hours digging through a gated community, and not only had Rae found the cookie cutters and baby clothes that she was looking for, she'd somehow managed to find a box full of baby toys that would keep EJ satisfied until he was out of diapers, and a couple of things for herself, too. As well as a gift for each of her cousins—a soundboard for Luke and a full Kindle Fire for April—and a new-used pair of work boots and a bottle of vodka for Topher. It had taken multiple trips to the truck that she and Bea had taken, but finally, Rae was on her way out with the last bag of things. "Sorry," she mused with a bit of a laugh. "It's been awhile since I've been out looting for regular things, so maybe I went a little bit overboard." If her trip around Christmastime had lasted much longer, maybe she'd have taken the chance and gathered a couple of things, but it had been cut short, and she hadn't gotten the chance. Now, it seemed, she was making up for lost time. She hoped Bea wasn't angry, or annoyed, or whatever else, that she was taking her time. But really, why should she be? They were on the opposite side of town from where that group of crazy people had set up shop—as much as Rae really wanted to put and end to whatever it was they were doing—and there actually weren't too many infected in the area, either, so all in all, it wasn't that dangerous a trip. "I figure," she mused, "if I get it all out of the way now, I won't have to go out for awhile. Which means, I won't have to deal with people telling me that I need to be treated like a butterfly in glass for awhile." She knew that they had their reasons. She was a mom now, of course, and she was looking out for more than herself. But she lived in Rory's example. Rory was a mom; a single mom, but she provided for her own son. She still took the occasional looting trip, still did what she needed to do. Rae figured, as long as she wasn't being outwardly reckless, looking for trouble, everything would be fine. "Did you get everything you need?" she asked as she leaned against the front door of the condo. |
