“It all fits in the back of the truck, so it’s cool,” Bea replied, shrugging off Rae’s apology about the things she had picked up. It had been a couple months since Bea had been out and brought back that many things. Actually, she hadn’t been out much at all, not on serious trips. She missed it a little.
But her list of partners was rapidly dwindling. Charlie hadn’t been going out much since she brought that kid back, and now not at all with the group that was camped out in the city. There were still a handful of guys that she trusted to watch her back though, but it just hadn’t been a high priority. She had other shit to try and accomplish.
At least she and Rae had been fortunate enough to not see many infected or any unpleasant surprises. Gated communities were usually good for that; the infected seemed to have a harder time weaseling their way into those neighborhoods. Though, she’d put down a Shuffler or two in the street on previous trips, she hadn’t seen anything more serious than that.
Didn’t mean that she didn’t stay on her toes though, Climbers, Runners or Leapers could always find their way in, given an opportunity. Same with Smashers, but Bea still hadn’t seen one of those in person and she didn’t want that changing any time soon.
“They’re just being concerned or whatever,” she pointed out, not taking a side by any means. She wasn’t going to tell anyone what they could and couldn’t do, because she didn’t like it when people told her what to do. “But I’m not defending them,” she tacked on, just to make herself clear.
Hitching her duffel bag higher on her shoulder, and checking the back of her jeans for her gun, Bea nodded. “I wasn’t going out for much.” Just some new boots for Ledger and a new collar for Ada, since she was growing out of the one Bea had found a few months earlier. Bea had also picked up another handgun she’d found in the drawer of one of the bedrooms they had sifted through, and a can of pepper spray. She could probably use the latter against wild dogs or something, the non-infected ones at least.
“I think we’re good to go, unless you want to do a sweep of a couple more of these places, just in case.” Sometimes it was useful to find things for the compound, but it wasn’t always something Bea did.
