Eloise was coping.
She'd set up a corner in the library to stash what few items she'd brought with her into the safehouse -- a backpack with a notebook in it that detailed her former research, a length of rope, and the machete that had been her companion for years now. A good companion, surely, but -- not appropriate here. End of the world or not, Ellie felt funny with a weapon in full sight; the library was supposed to be a quiet place. A sacred place, full of knowledge. ...Dead knowledge. And she was respectful of that, even if she could hardly fathom the people she shared this space with.
Trying to interact with them exhausted her. She knew it was good -- that this was where she should be, that she needed to experience some semblance of society again before she lost it completely -- but people were undoubtedly strange. She was beginning to suspect that they'd always been; she'd just been less able to see it, once upon a time.
Now I see everything.
I'm the strange one.
She sat with eyes closed, her backpack open next to her. There was an mp3 player she'd apparently found sometime in the last couple of years; she couldn't remember where it had come from, or what had prompted the ritual, but Ellie allowed herself one song a day. The idea was to make the battery last, but it was also somewhat amusing to see what might come up next; whoever had owned the device had varied taste.
Today it was a song she'd actually heard before, and Eloise couldn't hear a thing -- none of the overwhelming chatter and noise that echoed through the library now that the world had ended.
Four minutes of loneliness was a perfect respite.
