Please fix the bug that renders many saved IJ pages incorrectly.

IJ's coding still has the bug in it that LJ had for about 6 months last year but has now long since been fixed, wherein many pages when saved to one's hard drive then reopened later, render apostrophes and other non-alphanumeric characters incorrectly, making it a real pain to read things, especially stories, which have a lot of quotation marks.

For example, initial quotation marks render as “ (a circumflex Euro sign oe dipthong), closing quotation marks render as (a circumflex Euro sign square box), and apostrophes render as ’ (a circumflex Euro sign trademark sign).

Fixing this will allow users who save things for later reading to see the text rendered properly.

Shouldn't be too hard for the appropriate tech people to find the problem, but if they can't figure it out, they can ask the guys at LJ.

I was thinking about buying a permanent account here since many of my friends have come here, but I won't seriously consider it until this bug is fixed. Here's hoping you can get it found and fixed soon.

Thanks!

(ETA 6/13/08: I gave in and got a permanent account awhile ago, but here we are 9 months later, and this bug still hasn't been fixed, so I'm more than a bit bummed.)

p.s. I tried to submit this via the "Suggestion Proposal Generator" which was linked to from the Site Map, but that didn't work, so after some hunting around I found this comm, which seems to be the only way to notify you guys of problems or make suggestions. That's fine, but you might want to update the Site Map, Suggestions, and Tech Support info accordingly or fix the Generator (if you intend for it to work).

Comments

We are currently working on updating the source code to the latest LJ engine as well as working on a couple of other enhancements on top of that. We apologize for how long this is taking as I have had to divert my time to getting the site running stable on the new server. I will be diverting my resources very soon back to the task of preparing the new code for launch.

Yay! Glad to hear it. Hopefully that will do it.
Just curious, are we talking days? Weeks? Months?

Probably 2-3 weeks away, but don't hold me to that.

Of course not. Just wanted to get a guestimate. Thanks!

Maybe by the end of the year?
No big pressure, just curious.
Thanks!

Re: fixing the bug that renders characters on many saved IJ pages incorrectly

Hey squeaky,

Sorry to keep bothering you, but it's been awhile, so I'm just curious... any more updated guestimate on an e.t.a. for this one?

I'd really, really love it if I could save discussions, stories, etc. from friends IJs and have them be legible, but so far this problem persists.

Thanks!

That sounds like there is a conflict between the encoding used on the page and whatever you are saving them in. I'd suggest switching to Unicode (UTF-8) if that isn't what you are using.

Yeah, I know. Thanks for taking the time to make the suggestion though. I do appreciate it.

Generally that is what I'm using, and Firefox usually selects the correct encoding automatically regardless. However, the point is that these pages on IJ are somehow forcing Western (ISO-8859-1) encoding to supercede both the default and autoselect encoding when they are better seen with UTF-8. So yes, manually switching the character encoding to UTF-8 helps for a given viewing, but it would be nice not to have to do that every time I open a file.

LJ had the same bug for about 6 months in 2006. They were able to fix it pretty quickly after they found out about it.

As I said, it's clearly a low priority bug, but it would be nice to get it fixed someday nonetheless.
