HP Beholder 2012 - Sign-up Post!
This is the sign-up post for the 5th round of [info]hp_beholder: the Harry Potter Fic & Art exchange featuring those characters who are generally overlooked when it comes to romantic/erotic relationships.

Sign-ups will remain open until noon (NYC time) on Friday, February 3 (as you can see on this schedule), and assignments will go out soon after.

Generally I like plotty stories that explore the darker side of human nature. Flawed characters, gritty realism, unhappy endings, wizarding politics, strong women.

Petunia/Snape – After Lily's death Snape and Petunia are drawn to each other in an attempt to find something of Lily in the other.

Eileen Prince/Walburga Black – Two Slytherins and their struggle with tradition, wizarding marriage politics, and the powerlessness of witches in pure-blood society.

Petunia Dursley/Rita Skeeter – Rita interviews Petunia for her new project and uses every trick in her book to get her to talk. Petunia discovers her sexuality.

No “prettying up” the characters. I’d like to see them find happiness just as they are. I prefer adult characters or characters shown during the adult phase of their lives. I prefer plot over no plot and always enjoy seeing light shown into the nooks and crannies of canon that weren’t explored in the books.

I like banter and humor. Angst is okay, but I’d like a reasonably happy ending. My favorite non-listed characters are Severus Snape and Remus Lupin, and I'm always glad to see either of them in a fic. I dislike the Marauders as a group as well as fic set in that era. I’m not a big fan of the trio, Death Eaters as a group, or the next gen characters, either.

I like stories about secret admirers, first times, “what if?”, slice of life, and stories that show that reality and what’s commonly known and believed about someone or something aren’t necessarily the same thing. AUs are okay as are missing scene fics. I love stories that take place at Hogwarts and involve the teachers and staff as they are outside the prying eyes of the students.

I like a wide variety of things, really. I prefer a focus on character or relationship rather than plot/action. I really like: romance that isn't fluffy, and happy endings, disguises of all kinds as a device to bring characters together (letters where they don't know who the other is, masked ball, polyjuice, glory holes), cross-gen relationships, spells-gone-awry, UST build up and lust, kink of almost all kinds (not foot fetish or scat, but that about it) – favorites include dirty talk and manhandling, Hogwarts as a setting, small and everyday uses of magic or magic devices, AU/ARs welcome too. Prefer new relationship over established relationship (presuming there is any relationship involved). Other characters I like, and really wouldn't mind seeing with my top 10 above, include: harry, snape, any of the weasley brothers, neville, lucius.
I tend to dislike: excessive fluff or angst, long/big magic rituals... I can't think of anything else.

I tend to be very open to different pairings (slash, het, femslash, it's all good) and I don't really do OTPs, so feel free to break up canon ships. I like most kink and don't squick easily, nor do I get upset by dark fic or unhappy endings, but I won't be disappointed by a lighter or more vanilla fic either. Beyond that, here are some ideas for the characters I've picked, if you feel the need for a prompt:

Petunia- I would love to see her in a relationship with a magical person, either as a teenager or when she's older (or both), and to explore what that would mean to her. Petunia/Snape seems like a natural choice, but if you have a great idea for her with a different wizard or witch, go for it. (If you enjoy writing incest, I would happily read Petunia/Lily, but please don't feel obligated if that's not your thing.) If the story takes place after her marriage, please acknowledge Vernon's existence.

Firenze- How did he come to be so trusting of humans? Does he ever regret leaving the other centaurs behind? What kind of relationships might he have with humans now that he's part of their world? I'd be happy to read a relationship between him and a human, romantic or sexual or both (but please be realistic about what's physically possible given his size!). If interspecies stuff doesn't work for you, it'd be just fine to have a relationship between him and another centaur before his banishment.

The Grey Lady and/or the Bloody Baron- Since these two are incorporeal, I think it would be amazing to write something where either of them has a relationship with a living person, and it all happens in words -- I *love* dirty talk. Remember they've both heard how English has evolved for over 1000 years!

Septima Vector- The only student who seems to like Arithmancy is Hermione; maybe she likes the teacher as much as the subject? I think it would be cool to see something between these two, either when Hermione is a student or when she's older. If that pairing doesn't float your boat, maybe something between Vector and another professor? McGonagall?

The sweet butterflies and angst that comes with the beginning of a relationship, how they get together, why it took so long (or such a short amount of time) - I love stories about the chase, with the right build up a first kiss can be a truly amazing thing.

I like dark, creepy and sometimes scary stuff (torture/humiliation) with a bit of stockholm syndrome or (for a real twist) the dominant character developing feelings for the captive.

I like a glimpse into the last few Hogwarts years of canon adults, especially if it involves "forbidden" relationships (slytherin/any other house, homosexuality.) Or on the flip side of that, what the staff do behind closed doors once the students are asleep.

I like lost moments from canon, plots which run parallel to and reference canon, or completely AU fics (magic or non-magic), past explanations for canon, future results of canon, clever inventions of non-canon magic. I prefer well Brit picked fic (I'm British) but it doesn't ruin it for me if there are slips. I like schoolboys, sibling incest, infidelity, angst, romance-against-the-odds, the triumph of the underdog, bullies getting their come-uppance, secret semi-public sex. I like male anuses to get attention, but female anuses to be ignored. I'm not keen on facial hair, but I do like adults to have body hair (and all the sex has to happen to those old enough to grow body hair). The only thing which will make me actually stop reading is Ron!bashing. If Ron makes an appearance then please be nice to him. I'm a bit bored of Harry's POV because that's what we get in canon and fanfic is about exploring the unexplored and inventing additions to JKR's world for me. I'd like to see inside the mind of someone I haven't seen inside before.
