FIC: "From Half to Whole" for alisanne
Recipient: Alisanne
Author: [info]chibitoaster / [info]littleblackbow
Title: From Half to Whole
Rating: NC-17
Pairing: Viktor/George
Word Count: 15,991
Warnings/Content Information (Highlight to View): * Canon character deaths, dark themes.*
Summary: Viktor is coach of a community-league Quidditch team. George is half a person without his brother. When Ron and his friends take George to a Quidditch game. George begins to understand what’s really missing in his life.
Author's Notes: When I read your request, I knew I wanted to write something with George, and the more I thought about it, the more Quidditch kept creeping back into my thoughts. So here is it, a very Weasley-heavy H/C story about survival, recovery, and love.

Thanks to my wonderful betas...and to the chatroom that cheered me on and helped me get through this short little story that turned into an epic.

"From Half to Whole"

Oh my goodness! *exhales*
Thank you so much for this wonderfully detailed story!
First, I am thrilled that you got the idea for this from my signup. :) George/Viktor is a pairing I'd never have come up with and yet they work so well!
Second, the plot was great, I love all the details you put into it. The accident, George's trauma, the way the Weasleys all handled him with kid gloves, Ron's reaction...everything rang very true. When Viktor entered the picture I was so happy for him, for them.
The belt magic that George came up with (with Hermione's help) to cure Viktor's problem was fascinating, and Alexander was utterly adorable *cuddles him*, no wonder the Weasleys all fell in love with him. :)
What a fabulous gift! Thanks again, mystery author! I really enjoyed this.

Yay! I'm so happy! When I was given you to write for, I was thrilled! I know you like the Weasley boys... okay, you like it all, don't you? But then I know what a sucker you are for h/c, too.

Anyway, I'm glad you liked it. And yeah, somehow two Quidditch players were just meant to be, right? :D

This was genuinely moving. There's a sweetness here that lurks in the HP series but rarely shines forth this tenderly. I enjoyed the slow unfolding of George's interest in Quidditch, in Viktor, in life itself, his gradual emergence from the numb despair following Fred's death. I thought you handled the fresh hope and the occasional horrible pang of memories that will always hurt, of absences that will always be felt, with great persuasiveness and quiet emotion. The descriptions of flying are lovely, and Viktor is a very appealing character. I also smiled at the chaos of the Weasley clan (which, frankly, in real life would drive me up a wall), although poor Ron! He's so often chosen to play the prat.

A very engaging story with a lot of heart.

Thanks. I wanted to write something that showed how broken George was at the beginning, and how, with the help of Viktor, he's able to build up a new life for himself.

And sometimes family, in their attempts to make things better, deny a person what they need to get themselves out of depression like that.

Anyway, thank you very much for your comments and observations. I'm so glad you were able to get out of it so much of what I put into it. ^_^ Your comment really made my day.

That was wonderful! I liked all the main relationships, and the added touches of things like Viktor taking custody of little Alexander were just lovely. But what really hooked me was the magic! Great premise, and of course both George and Hermione would be the first to try to invent something to help. (The very thought that Viktor could be using that charm in the first place is fascinating to me! Great use of magic in ways we Muggles just can't do). :)

Thanks so much! Yeah, I love stories that use a lot of magic. Especially ones that use magic as a problem-solving device. And I figured since the Weasley twins were so clever at inventing new things, what George really needed was an opportunity to realize he can still do it without his brother.

Plus, I just love Quidditch. Needed to write something Quidditch-heavy. ^_^

Thanks for your kind comment!

This has left me wonderfully teary. Fred/Viktor is a pairing I never would have thought of, but they're perfect together. The detail about magic is exquisite. Also, you treated Fred and Viktor and their tragedies with such compassion, that I couldn't help but feel for them and fall in love with them.

Thank you so much! I'm really glad you liked it. I wanted to have someone else in the story who'd suffered a tragedy - perhaps not as badly as George had - but who was able to come out of it and make something of himself. In the case of Viktor, he lost his mentor, took responsibility for Alexander, lost his career, and had to live very simply, but was able to come out of all of that with a good attitude, still.

Anyway, thank you so much for your comment!

I am now loving writing Viktor. I want to see what else I can do with him... but first I've got two other fics I'm working on, and LMOM. :P

Thanks for your comment!

This is very sweet. Alexander is a great original character, and I really liked your creative use of magic in this fic - not to mention the healing power of Quidditch.

Yay Quidditch!!

I figured if there was anything that could snap George back to what he used to be, it would be something he loved. And the way the twins used to be about Quidditch, I figured it was a good device.

Thank you so much for your comment. I'm glad you liked the story.

AWW. Gee, this was really awesome. I never really felt that bad for George. I mean, I know he lost his twin, but they were different people, even if they spent a lot of time together. And this made me really see how hurt he could be. He was so broken, and it just took that bit of opportunity and pushing to make him whole again, as well as a new someone to spend time with.

Alexander was super sweet. Of course Molly would fall in love with him.

This was fantastic and made me so happy. Victor was super dependable and respectful and gentle, the family was as nosy as you'd expect, and I believed that the belt fit the universe and made sense.

Yeah, Viktor/George wasn't something I thought of until I read the prompt, and then after that, it just seemed like the perfect pair. George being depressed and unable to cope, and then an old almost-friend comes back and things get better. :D

“I can only try to do what is best. Not everyone is a hero who does big things like Mr. Potter. Some of us do little things and that’s all we can do.”

That's one of my favourite lines EVER. And those "little things" are so big, aren't they? Reading it made my gut twitch.

I love your characterisations of George and Viktor, and little Alexander! And the way the rest of the family really does walk on eggshells around George... Viktor's forcing the issue of George getting to be him-self is such a gift to everyone.

Also, one of the things I've always loved about the twins is that they are really creative inventors, so I adore how you worked that into the story.

(This story reminds me a little of annafugazzi's Leave Out All the Rest, though perhaps taking place later. I mean, clearly, it's NOT the same 'verse, but there's a similar tragic, broken feel to both stories. I say this as a huge compliment; LOATR made me cry in almost every chapter, and I know that having read that one coloured my reading of this. If you haven't read it yet, you really ought to.)

Um, so that link I left goes back to anna's userinfo page, because she's still in the middle of a rewrite of it (though it was posted at the hp_georgecentric comm on LJ a year ago). So, this is the link to the first part of the imperfect version: http://hpgeorgecentric.livejournal.com/15904.html. For, to paraphrase your story, it's the imperfections that make something/someone perfect.

I'm also off to rec this on hp_georgecentric, because it's just.that.good.

Thank you so much! And thanks for the rec!!

I'm very glad you liked that line. I thought it was the most poignant line in the story, and really told of what both Viktor and George were about. Viktor saving Alexander and taking him on as his son. George making the belt for Viktor. They're both heroes who are just doing what they can do.

Little things in the grand scheme, but for the person that benefits, it means everything in the world.

I haven't been able to bring myself to read "Leave Out All the Rest" yet. I know it's going to be fantastic. I'm a big fan of hers in general, and I know I have to read that. But I have two more fics I'm writing just now, and I have three more days of LMOM. :D

I promise I'll let you know what I think when I read it.

Oh, that was too, too sweet. :) I love stories where love slowly builds and I love damaged characters finding the power within themselves to heal again, so this story is quite the rare treat. Alexander is adorable and your Viktor is very believable. Imagining a powerful, athlete like him undergoing such a horrible injury and finding the will to recover as much as is possible presents us with just such a proud and humbled man.

I've read many George fics since DH was published, but I like the tack you took here in giving him a problem to solve, one that touches him personally and allows him to work past his losses. Including everyone in his family, even the extended family, was a nice touch and it was good to see a coming-out scene where not everyone instantly understands and is supportive. More realistic, despite what one might wish for the world in general.

I thoroughly enjoyed this and you did a bang-up job. Brava!

Thanks! I'm really glad you got that much out of it. :D And you know I'm not usually a writer, so this really means a lot to me.

Yeah, George seemed broken to me at the end of the books, and I wanted him to have someone who was also broken with whom he could resonate. And h/c had to happen. They both start out being hurt, and end up comforting in their own ways.

and yeah, Coming out scenes... I figured there would be one or two who would be somewhat supportive (Ginny and Charlie in this case), and the rest of the family either in denial, or upset about it.

When the bunny she bites, it is very strong, indeed!

Wonderful story! I think broken!George is something that is to be expected after losing Fred and George speaking in half-sentences, well, that just about broke my heart. I love that Viktor understood what losing a part of yourself means. Also, I love this pairing now. :D
