10:14PM - the epic tale

Having heard a recent radio program about Wagner's The Ring Cycle (what could be more epic?), it got me to thinking. In this day and age of textmessages and drabbles, is there any room left for the epic story in fanfiction?

I'm not disparaging the short story writer (heck, I am a short story writer) but once upon a time, the epic story was something that a a lot more writers worked on. Now we get short tales, episodes of stories given to us over long stretches of time that may fall in the same universe but don't necessarily follow an overall arc. There are a lot of drabbles, maybe not so many ficlets? Is it enough to give us an acorn of an idea, a thought, a laughline, a snippet of a scene, or do we need the epic tale to tell us something?

Readers in this and other fandoms: is the epic story still thriving elsewhere? Do you have time to read the epics? Or do the short ones fit your busy lifestyle better?

Writers: do your fingers itch to write long tales, or do the short, succinct ones hold you better in thrall? Have you changed what you write over time? Do the stories grow longer? Or have they tightened up to only the most essential pieces? Do the long stories just tend to linger on your harddrives, unfinished?

What do you think about the epic tale?

What are the true Highlander epics? Not just a novel sized story, but something so extensive that it deserves the description?

6:29PM - OTP 4-ever?

Someone pointed out all the crossovers that have been prominent in posting in the Highlander fandom lately, which got me to wondering about our OTP of Methos/Duncan.

Is our OTP (One True Pairing) still hardcore and untouchable, or has it weakened?

Who's getting to spend more time in other sandboxes getting nookie from other characters? It's been said by wiser folks than I that Methos is fandom's little black dress. Does this mean that he's been giving Duncan the slip and going off to have fun?

Is it more acceptable that Methos gets paired with someone outside the HL fandom than within it? Is it time to establish a new OTP? (Can one even do that?)

Or does the burning bright flame of Duncan/Methos still light up our minds like in the days of old?

Have you found that you still prefer DM/M over all other pairings in the fandom, or has it been done to death and you're excited to see authors stretching out and finding other partners for the characters to dilly-dally with?

10:30AM - Fic: 'I Am Going To The West' (01/??)

When we last left Duncan, Methos, and Charlotte at Mac’s new winery, Duncan was insanely curious as to just how the two knew each other. While I’d intended this to be that story, instead it’s the story of the last time they met. I hope you’ll enjoy it regardless! On the upside, it isn’t a crossover!

Rating: PG13
Notes: A sequel to ‘He’s a Pirate’.
Characters: Methos, Duncan MacLeod, Original Characters.
Summary: It’s been a century and a half since Methos and Charlotte last met, and Duncan wants to know all the details.

9:15PM - Big Dreams Fic Check In

I've noticed a drop off in the number of entries of writers keeping readers notified of how their current projects are going, so I though maybe a central post for everyone to do a Check-In might be kind of fun. Sort of a See It All In One Place post.

So, tell us what you're working on. Is it fic? A vid? A crossover? Long, short, a drabble? Gen, het, slash? What are your goals for the next week, the next month, the next sixth months?

Then, at some point in the undetermined future, there'll be another check-in with a link to this post so you can see what you accomplished, what you thought you were going to work on but didn't, or what story came out of the ether and blindsided you and took up all your free time and will. *grin*

Leave your laundry lists in the comments!

7:41PM - There Can Only Be One!

No...I didn't get that wrong. That's the new slogan for the NBA playoffs. There are some wicked nifty commercials that go along with it (available on youtube with a search for 'there can only be one') and a SNL spoof skit about the Democratic primaries.

Hee! I mean, it's two words transposed! So now I have images of the players running about the court with swords instead of a basketball. Plus, the commericals are very intense, very philosophical, so they fit right in with all the angsty Highlander stuff. (Except that in Highlander the loser is dead, in basketball, they just go home and try again next season.)

Add in that some minor league baseball mascot's head came off last week....

I sense a trend.

Here's a link to an article that's very positive about the new slogan:
NBA: There Can Only Be One

You know, it's a real habit to want to write "be only" instead of "only be".

Yes, I know it's the wrong basketball in the icon. It's what I had.

5:49PM - Highlander Remake.

Summit takes on 'Highlander' redo. Has anyone else seen this? I can't say that I'm too thrilled. The "Highlander" franchise is very near and dear to my heart venom pumper, and I don't like the idea of someone else coming in to do stuff with it. Ok, The Source and The Final Dimension weren't that great, but I like to pretend that they don't exist. It helps me sleep a little better at night. lol

Current mood: predatory

8:44PM - Highlander: The Animated Series

First, to make sure it was real and I wasn't imagining it, I made sure it existed at imdb: Highlander The Animated Series.

But other than a fuzzy jpeg here or there, I've never seen it. Has anyone seen it? Is it available anywhere for rent or purchase? (Is it worth it if it is?) I'm just having a curious phase at the moment about a series in my numero uno fandom that I know nothing about. It's kind of a weird feeling.

What were the episodes about, even? Was it aimed at adults or children? Was there actual head-chopping-off?

9:52PM - fic link: Genus Immortalis

[info]elmyraemilie wrote a hot new little crossover between Highlander and Blood Ties.

The summary: In the genus Immortalis, there are a number of species, among them Immortalis vampirus and Immortalis immortalis.

It's very adult, hot and lusty, very angsty, and awesome slashy. If you will even consider Methos with someone else, then you should go and read this. Plus, lots of swordplay. And a Joe with a gun, and he knows how to use it!

Ah, full disclosure--I did some beta work on it. But even as I was beta'ing it, I was enjoying it!

It's finally finished, and just at its first anniversary too :)

Rating: R for violence & non-consensual sex.
Notes: A story in the Bloodties series, set in the Star Trek future/time line, but no ST characters, just the 'Mirror, Mirror' concept. Crossover with Forever Knight.
Characters: Methos, Duncan MacLeod, MirrorMethos, Kronos, Silas, Lucien LaCroix, Original Characters
Summary: When Methos' past becomes part of the present, the consequences could be deadly for those close to him.

9:59AM - Mothers, in Highlander

Seeing as how it is Mother's Day here (though not everywhere, it is a card-company created holiday) I thought it might be interesting to have a discussion about the concept of mother in the Highlander universe. It's a big concept.

For one, Immortals seem to have no parents -- they show up as babies and if they're lucky they get adopted. No one has ever explained where Immortals come from, although there are a couple fanfic stories out there that have posed certain theories. Anyone remember links to those? Gosh, it's been a long time since I ran across them. One had it that Immortal mothers had their babies and then forgot. Another had it that the mortal mother just sort of burned up. Ick.

Duncan MacLeod certainly was given a big dose of it in his backstory -- his father ousted him, but his mother accepted him back into the clan, which is the acceptance that he hangs his "of the clan MacLeod" upon. So he's sort of reminded of his mom everytime he says his name--maybe a reason why he won't change it? It's that powerful of an acceptance for him.

Anne named her daughter after Duncan's mother -- those were some pretty interesting episodes.

Methos appears to have no memory of his parents, so no memory of a mother. I'm sure he'd protest it, but I'd think that'd have to have an effect on a body.

Richie went from fosterhome to foster home, and he had some dim memory of his mom that absolutely spurred him on to investigate.

Rebecca was a powerful mother figure for a lot of Immortals -- is it different because she was a woman and a teacher than from other teachers who are men? Or is it her personality that makes it so?

Amanda had some mothering instincts -- she took Kenny in, and even several hundred years later, she still felt protective of him. He had completely other ideas about his relationship with Amanda, though. Ooogie.

What else? There's got to be tons more stuff in the universe. Cassandra? Least mother-figure woman in the whole show? Tessa? She would have made an awesome mom, and yet she chose her love for Duncan over that. (Assuming they wouldn't have adopted or gone some other route later on if she had lived.)

How do you see mom, mothers, motherhood as a concept dealt with in Highlander?

Please, bring the discussion!

12:24PM - Images/objects as story prompts?

Things have been pretty quiet story-wise in Highlander, except for crossovers.

Any interest in a loose challenge for stories based on images or objects? Prompts (links or pictures themselves) could be posted within a certain time period or at random. I just posted something like this on my journals, and I have others rattling around (one fascinating image of elephants (real ones) buried in a Neolithic era Chinese tomb. Anything fascinating, curious, or provoking would do. Mystery history? Clothing... ?

Anyone interested at all?

10:53AM - vid rec: Life Among the Watchers

Keerawa did a fantastic vid all about Joe Dawson and his life and his life in the Watchers.

Set to "All Along the Watchtowers" by Jimi Hendrix, she does some great perspective work as she moves through 'early Joe' to 'Joe that watches MacLeod' to 'Joe that becomes involved with Immortals'. It's really worth a watch.

10:06AM - admin post, topic: tags

I spent a few moments reviewing the tag situation for the asylum and found they were pretty skimpy overall. I think it's a bad idea to have too many tags because then you end up with tags that are for only one entry and it creates tag-clutter (these can grow to enormous size and eat small cities in a single swallow). But I think there should be more useful tags, so I'm open for suggestions. Drop me an e-mail (elistaire at yahoo dot come) or leave a comment here. Many thanks!

9:38PM - April is National Poetry Month

I only know this because people at the college I go to have put up poems in the women's rest room. Very entertaining.

National Poetry Month is almost over, but we've still got a few days left.

Feel like trying your hand at a bit of poetry?
Maybe a rec?
An essay on how difficult it is to write poetry?
Why you write fic instead of poetry?
Is there still an audience out there *for* poetry? Fanfic poetry?

Please remember to link it here if you feel inspired!
