So by Christmas we could have a new Prime Minister, without another election. Somewhat unsure of how I feel about this, yes I did vote Liberal in the last election, but there is several mixed points in a coalition government.
Under the current agreement, Dion would become PM till May when the leadership convention would be held, and while the Bloc wouldn't be apart of the government officially, they will back in, and basically control the country as without their support the government would fall. The cabinet would be 1/4th NDP, and the rest would be Liberal, with a Liberal PM and deputy PM.
The Governor General, doesn't really have much say as to what happens, if she is given a coalition that is supported and gains a majority, she really can't stop it. And the government can't afford to hold an election, costing $330million dollars, and most of the other parties are broke. The Conservatives are really the only ones that have money to run an election, Liberals don't even have a leader. Otherwise, the GG does hold the power to call another election, which would see turn out fall even lower....
Given how the economy is slowly going into a recession, its not smart that they are making the government seem so instable, when we need a stable one. I do in part understand why the Opposition is doing this, it does go beyond the legislation to take away the vote allowance that gives money to each party for the number of votes they receive. There is also the government's lack action with the economic crisis, and not changing the fiscal update to reflect the worsening economy. Also, the 'economic crisis advisory' team also looks good, with Paul Martin, long time finance and later PM, an other Liberal Premiers and an NDP one as well, that looks promising.
Still I'm mixed on the whole thing... Canada didn't vote them in, but will they act better than the Tories?
