Future Student Meeting [backdated to earlier this evening]
Once the crowd in the hall had dwindled to a reasonably small size, Albus rose from the high table and made his way to the antechamber off the side of the hall. A few people seemed to take notice, of course, but that could not be helped. Considering all the rumours already surrounding the Future Students, another about their meeting with the Headmaster certainly wouldn't make things that much worse.

He unlocked the door with a wave of his wand, lit the torches within the room, and conjured a table as well as thirteen soft, cushioned armchairs. They were likely be here a while. He saw no need for anyone to be physically uncomfortable, even if what he had to tell them would no doubt cause them considerable emotional discomfort.

Susan had been sitting nervously at the Hufflepuff table through all of dinner. She barely could even eat anything. Being the mild mannered girl she was, she had never had an audience with the Headmaster for disciplinary action. Really, the incident with the DA was the only time she'd ever been close to having broken the rules.

She saw Dumbledore go into the antechamber and figured she should follow. She waited a few seconds before departing, but made her way rather quickly. Somehow this probably had to do with Harry, Hermione, and Ron, but she still felt somewhat guilty.

"Er, Professor?"

"Yes, Miss Emmor?" Albus said, smiling cheerfully at the girl who had just entered the room, wearing a fairly guilty expression. He nodded toward one of the armchairs as he continued toward the table, settling himself in the odd chair at one end. "Is something on your mind?"

Susan sat down, but continued to look nervous. "No, Professor. I mean, yes, because I have to speak to you which usually isn't good, but I didn't do anything wrong... I mean, I don't think I did anything wrong." She usually could carry herself better than this, she chided herself. Being in the past was putting her on edge.

Albus did his best to repress his smile, since he imagined it would not help with the girl's obvious agitation. "Oh no, my dear girl ... I am reasonably certain that you have not, in fact, done anything wrong. Now all of you have assimilated into the school, the time has merely come -- or passed, rather -- for us to begin a discussion with regards to strategy. That is why I have asked you here today." Well, it was not the entire reason, of course, but he saw no clear reason not to calm the girl's nerves.

Hannah had seen Headmaster Dumbledore make his way to the antechamber... and watched as her best friend left her side almost immediately to join him. Perhaps she should wait awhile. She was nervous, unsure of herself and this situation. It was an ongoing problem, being tossed back into the past and all.

Running a hand through her hair, she took a breath, remembering that Draco had said not to be unsure of herself. It wouldn't help matters. Time to be brave.

Standing, she made her way to the antechamber, tucking her hair behind her ear and stepping into the room. It was obvious in the way she fidgeted slightly that she was nervous, but she swallowed it down and made her way to one of the armchairs, sitting straight-backed but with her legs drawn up indian style.

You're in Gryffindor for a reason. Hermione reminded herself as she watched Hannah and Susan leave dinner to meet Dumbledore. Summoning all her bravery, she followed them to the antechamber.

It was her fault that he was calling the meeting--it had to be. She had revealed the truth to Remus, and she was the reason for Dumbledore's disappointment. She could only hope that she would not be expelled.

Hermione ignored her pounding heart and sat down in one of the armchairs. "Good evening, sir." She said softly, looking down at her lap nervously.

Looking at Hermione, she offered the girl a nod. This was one of the ones she really should get to know. Especially if she wanted to be included in the whole figuring out what to do now that they were here thing. It felt like she hadn't done anything since she got here, but she had a sneaking suspicion that the Gryffindor girl had. Hermione Granger never was the type to leave things unsettled... or at least, not that Hannah had seen.

Albus nodded to both girls in succession as they took their seats. Miss Puckle, he noticed, seemed to be having trouble looking him in the eye. On the other hand, he didn't exactly need Legilimency to determine that she was the source of the leak. Only nine more of them to arrive, and he could begin the meeting. In the meantime, a bit of chit chat might not go amiss. If nothing else, it might serve to put them at ease.

"How are your lessons?" he asked pleasantly, smiling at the three girls in turn.

OOC: Bleh! Forgot to reply instead of comment.

Ron grumbled as he set eyes on Hermione, but smiled weakly at Hannah and Susan.

He flopped on to a chair ungracefully and pretended not to be listening.

Hermione glared at Ron as he entered, and then turned to Dumbledore.

Finally, a discussion she liked.

"They're great, Professor. Have you ever sat through one of Professor McGonagall's classes? No matter what year it is, she is fascinating." Talking about her favorite teacher put a smile on her face.

"And the library has so many books that are out of print in the future...oh, I'm sorry." She said nervously, covering her mouth. "I shouldn't discuss it."

It was a bit too late for that, really.

Hannah smiled slightly, scratching the back of her neck. Apparently she wasn't the only one having issues with the future, past thing. The fact that Hermione Granger was having her own issues with it was oddly comforting.

"They're fine. A lot like the ones back home," she offered, trying to help out Hermione. "I mean, like she said, a lot of books that are out of print, but some that are still around. I mean, in our time. And things are still different... people here that weren't."

She looked down at her hands, memories of her mother running through her head. Tucking her hair behind her ear, she looked back up and smiled a little.

There was far too much tension in the room for Harry's tastes. Though, he couldn't say that he was not to blame. He smiled slightly at the professor, mostly out of respect and took a seat near Ron. It seemed like they both were a little at odds with Hermione.

Ron shot a look at Harry and knew Hermione was being a pain to him as well.

As Hannah began speaking Ron crossed both of his legs and attempted to scrunch down and blend in to his chair. Maybe he could just listen and get out of there.

Susan looked on with puzzlement as Hermione, Ron, and Harry all seemed to be at odds with each other. She felt a momentary pang of panic as she wondered how they were going to get anything done if those three couldn't get along, but then she remembered that Dumbledore intended to give a plan of action.

"The classes are going well. The material is slightly different but not as different as I thought it would be."

"It certainly helps that I'm not alone in this. I don't know what I'd have done if it were just me that had been tossed back here like this."

Hannah scratched the back of her neck, pulling her hair over her shoulder. It was sometimes a nervous habit to begin braiding the strands, and that was exactly what she was doing now.

Albus nodded to Harry as the boy entered, listening intently to each student's account of how they had been getting on in this time. Pity Miss Puckle had let something about out of print books slip before he had a chance to cast the proper concealment and protection charms. Then again, the newt was effectively out of the cauldron now regardless, so a little more damage control on top of this was likely negligible.

Neville had forgotten all about this meeting. So, when he had seen everyone else getting up, he couldn't figure out why. Then it hit him! OH YEAH!

Jumping up, he ran toward the door, stopping right outside to calm himself. He hoped he wasn't the last one. As he walked in, he saw that he was really among the first and made his way to one of the armchairs hoping to stay out of trouble. After all, when the Headmaster called a meeting it always meant trouble right?

Pansy wondered what was going on, but figured it was more of Dumbledore's stupid ideas. Since it was his fault, she was stuck in this time, she hated him even more than before.

She had practically stormed to the table before plopping down with a huge, dramatic sigh.

Seeing Neville and Pansy come in, Hannah's fingers went to her hair, toying with the ends of it. Pansy made her nervous, but Neville, he was sweet to her. She offerend them both a smile and a nod. She was steadfast in her decision to try to become friends with all of them. Maybe she'd succeed.

Five left.

Only a few more and then Dumbledore could start talking about the truth. He had to know that Hermione had told Remus--but would he tell the others?

Or would he just say that certain students from the past knew the truth, without naming anyone?

Bugger. She hadn't even told some of them, and she was going to get the full punishment.

Luna had a spring in her step as she followed the crowd into an out-of-the-way room. Hermione had never bothered to get back to her on the subject of restarting the DA, but it appeared she and Harry must have worked out the details and secured Dumbledore's assistance. She couldn't wait to get started.

When she entered, all her peers looked distressed. As they seemed to be focused more on Dumbledore than on her, Luna didn't dwell on it. She took a seat on the flagstone, folding her legs under her.

Vincent wasn't going let his guard down. He kept looking over his shoulders, lest Parvati ambush him. Having made it safely inside, he sat down near Pansy. Naturally, he didn't sit right next to her, but intended that spot for Draco.

He wondered what this meeting was all about. Did Dumbledore have a strategy for them? Would he remind them that they all had the right to exist? Vincent was still in knots over being marked for death. Even if Parvati intended to merely kill one or both of his parents, he wasn't so daft as to not realise that would mean he'd never be born. And of course, he knew he couldn't bear the death of yet another person he cared about.

Draco had left supper and followed the other students into the meeting with Dumbledore. He caught sight of the empty seat beside Vincent, realizing that the boy had been undoubtedly quiet over the past few days. Sliding into it gracefully, Draco reached across and placed a gentle hand on Vincent's shoulder, inclining his head in greeting. "You're safe for now, Vince," Draco murmured quietly, catching the glimpses of fear on his friend's face every now and then.

[OOC: In the interest of time, I'm going to just pretend that Theodore and Padma wandered in at some point and get on with it, already. Oh, and this will be in two parts, 'cause Dumbly's got a lot to say. ;-)]

Albus thought momentarily of asking Miss Lamb if she wouldn't prefer to join them at the table, but something about the dreaminess in her expression told him that the suggestion might not be welcome. Smiling to himself, he pointed his wand at the door, closing and locking it, and added several protection charms -- including a Silencing Charm -- as well as silent alarms design to let him, and only him, know if someone attempted to listen at the door. When all that was taken care of, Albus cleared his throat and turned to all of those assembled.

"I am pleased that you could all join me this evening," he began, smiling around the table. "I can tell that some of you are concerned, shall we say, as to why I have called you here. First, let me assure you that no one is in trouble, as it were." He avoided letting his gaze linger too long on Hermione, although the temptation was great. "Or at least not any more trouble than you would normally be in, otherwise.

"However..." Albus sighed softly and clasped his hands together on the table in front of him. "I chanced to overhear a conversation recently that gave me pause. When the twelve of you first awoke, I believe I tried to impress upon you the seriousness of your predicament, but after hearing this conversation, I am not certain the message soaked in -- or at least not to the degree I would have preferred. In light of that, let me speak more plainly, in the hopes that none of you will misunderstand me this time.

"The twelve of you are in very grave danger, merely by virtue of residing in a time that is not your own. As much as I wish that I had the power to do so, I cannot eradicate that danger entirely, although I can make every effort to mitigate and delay the threat as much and as long as possible. It is unfortunate, however, that some amongst you have decided that either the situation is not all that dire, or it is, but you have nonetheless wittingly placed others in as much danger, as well, for -- as you see it -- their own good.

"You have mentioned the Death Eaters to me previously. I would have thought your prior knowledge of that organization made it quite clear what sort of people we are dealing with. There is not a single person in this room that Lord Voldemort--" He tried not to lose his patience at the collective shudder that made its way 'round the table. "--would not torture and kill for foreknowledge of the upcoming war. And yet, some of you have still chosen to visit that fate upon others. At this point, however, I have little choice but to say, 'Very well. The die is cast.'

[info]dumbledore_or

"James Potter and Remus Lupin and others like them -- because I am sure that there are others, by now -- are in every bit as much danger as yourselves. I can only hope that being able look into the eyes of those you have endangered will make the situation seem less abstact. And some of you may now be thinking that I should simply Obliviate them all, but I fear that is no lasting solution. Memory Charms can be broken by a powerful enough wizard -- and make no mistake, Voldemort is powerful enough to do so. The mind in question is also usually damaged beyond repair in the process, and so the result is the same: your family and friends are no safer, and Voldemort still learns all that he wishes to know.

"But I can, and will, make every effort to protect them, as I am protecting you. They do not need to know the full tale, but they -- like you -- will need to be prepared. Therefore, first of all, I would suggest that you do not tell anyone else. We will do better to concentrate our efforts on helping those in the most immediate peril. Second, I will need a list of who all knows and who all suspects that you are not who we have said you are. If you are hesitant to tell me in front of your peers, please contact me with that information via Legens. I will speak to all of them myself. Third, I believe the time has come for each of you to tell me what, if anything, you wish to change, and how you propose to go about it. From there, we can develop more a detailed plan of action for each of you. I should also like to continue meeting weekly to discuss your progress, as well as any problems that may have arisen.

"And finally, I would ask that each of you join the Duelling Club without delay, if you have not already done so, and I will encourage the others to do the same. At the end of the year, when Professor Crouch retires, I myself will be taking over sponsorship of the club. That will likely boost the membership to a small degree, as well. We will work on individual duelling skills in addition to co-ordinated combat tactics. For those of you who show exceptional aptitude, we will develop something of a quasi-prefect structure, in which you will work with your peers in smaller groups to give them more personalised guidance.

"Now ... are there any questions?" Albus finished with a cheerful smile that belied the gravity of what he had said before, but he saw no reason to wallow in it. Things could always be done to correct the oversights of the past. No reason to get bogged down in sorrow -- especially when there was work to be done.

So James did know. Lily hadn't confirmed that, but it didn't surprise her. That meant that Sirius knew, too.

Fortunately, Dumbledore hadn't mentioned her part in this.

Hermione sighed, rubbing her head as she took in what the Headmaster was saying.

My way of thinking only leads to death...perhaps a new approach is what we need. She tried to focus on Dumbledore's words.

"You mean like the DA, Professor? That's what I was hoping we would do." Luna blurted the words out instead of raising her hand for Dumbldore to call on her. Social etiquette was a little beyond her grasp. "Though I can say I did not tell anyone. Not even my mother. I've been so keen to follow your rules from the day in the hospital wing, I've only had one conversation with her, and I didn't allow myself to so much as warn her to be careful with her experimental potions."

Hearing Luna speak of the DA, Hannah smiled. "The Duelling Club..." Hannah mused softly, toying with the ends of her hair as she pursed her lips slightly. "I think... I think that's a good idea. And... perhaps... meetings, like the DA used to do. If we've put these people in danger, I think they deserve to know the ins and outs of whatever it is we decide to do when we do it. Keep them up to date?"

Hannah wasn't sure she should be offering up the idea, but it was there on the tip of her tongue, and she was deciding to take Draco up on his advice. No second guessing and no backing down anymore. She may be a Hufflepuff, but that didn't mean she didn't have a spine... somewhere.

Harry had plans of reforming the DA, that was what he had thought to bring up to Dumbledore after this meeting. The Duelling Club was unnecessary but he wanted to speak to Dumbledore about that particularly, not in front of everyone.

"How are we supposed to correct what has happened?" he questioned, "Considering the fact that the truth has been spilled, what can we do to correct that. It doesn't bode well if the current students know that we're their friends' kids and whatnot."

He couldn't help but looking at Hermione when he said it, he wasn't over it yet.

[info]dumbledore_or

"I do not think it can be corrected, Harry," Albus said then, heavily. "Not in any meaningful way, that is. And by that I mean not in such a way as to take those who already know out of danger. Judging by the conversation I overheard, however, they are aware that their children and their friends' children are attending lessons with them. Whether or not that bodes well for our efforts, they are in fact aware.

"Those who do not suspect anything have likely been taken in by my previous excuses and gave the matter no further thought, so I do not think we need concern ourselves with them. Those who do know or suspect must now be taken into our confidence. At the very least, knowing that their surmises were correct will stop them comparing notes with and bouncing ideas off their friends and acquaintances in the meantime.

"Therefore, I would suggest also making them aware of the danger they are in, if nothing else; teaching them to protect themselves, as well; and hoping against hope that they do not see fit to spread the rumours any further, and in turn endanger others," he concluded, allowing himself a small, mischievous smile aimed at no one in particular.

Well, how fair was it that Harry's parents got to know?! Well, as far as Neville was concerned, it wasn't fair at all. Since all these other people knew, he didn't see what the problem would be in telling his parents that he was...who he was. Pondering that, he leaned back in his seat, mumbling to himself.

"I could leave them a note...or send an owl..." Ignoring everyone around him, he continued to think about how he could tell them. If there was any one thing that he could change, it would be how his parents turned out. If by telling them what happened he could protect them, it might be worth it.

Neville knew that he couldn't really tell anyone else of his plans. But well, it was worth a shot, right?

Hermione ignored Harry's glare, once more focusing on Dumbledore's words. He was probably right--since some of the students from the past already knew, they needed to learn to defend themselves.

She then heard Neville muttering. She frowned at him. She hadn't told anyone's parents--she had avoided it, in fact. James was just a bit too clever for his own good. Telling others would not be wise...not at this point.

In fact, it wasn't wise earlier, when she did it, either. Hermione sighed heavily, sinking into her seat. She really could use a time-turner now...why had she convinced herself that telling Remus was a good idea?

Bloody time travel.

"Professor," Harry began, "I had wanted to talk to you about this later, when it was something that we could mull over but it seems like now is just as good a time as ever. A year ago we started a club, sort of a defense club specifically aimed at learning to fight off Death Eaters and Voldemort. Perhaps now would be the best time to reform it?"

It had been what everyone had wanted to hear, hadn't it? That the DA would be reformed and once more they would be able to learn to fight properly. The problem was, however, that Harry wasn't certain that this Voldemort played the same games that the Voldemort that Harry had faced annually did.

Albus nodded thoughtfully. "That is essentially what I was proposing earlier with the Duelling Club, Harry. I am, of course, open to suggestions in this regard, but I feel compelled to caution you against forming a more exclusive organisation amongst yourselves, for two very good reasons.

"In the first place, this club -- however secretive you may think yourselves -- will eventually be discovered and targeted. Practising defence out in the open, under the guise of a larger Duelling Club, will draw less attention to the group, allowing you to hide in plain sight, as it were. At the moment, we have the element of surprise on our side. I have no wish to squander it by arousing more suspicions than simple teaching and learning of defensive magic warrants.

"Secondly, I know the twelve of you are here to perform various well-defined functions and to save specific members of your families or circle of friends. On the other hand, I am certain that many more people will perish in the upcoming war than merely your relations and acquaintances. These people should also be afforded the opportunity to learn to protect themselves. Wouldn't you agree?"
