SENIOR MONTHLY BONDING: January

SENIOR BONDING

January’s senior monthly bonding is being hosted by a very (very, very) reluctant Mr. Chettri. He’s smiling, but there’s something behind his eyes that suggests that this is his nightmare.

He’s reserved the atrium, which has been filled with small tables and chairs. Students are assigned a partner, and are asked to sit at a table together. There are pastries, coffee and tea available if you want them. (Vegan options are offered.) You’re also provided with a piece of paper. The goal of the game is to sit and talk quietly so he doesn’t have to, and try to find as many things as possible that you and the other person have in common.

THE RULES
  • Your characters have an hour and a half.
  • They must write down every item that the two of them have in common.
  • These things must be discovered by playing out the scene to qualify for a win.
    • Clarification: This means that you must roleplay the discussion and discovery of items in order to have them be counted. Simply listing them without your characters talking out their similarities will not count. This event is meant to reward a pair who plays out a scene with a lot of dialogue.
  • If you come up with something that breaks the game, Mr. Chettri will be amused but he’ll discount your inflated numbers. (For instance, saying you have 206 bones in common.) This is about getting to know one another, not trying to outsmart your teacher.
    • Clarification: Any time a category of very similar things (friends in common, classes in common, hookups in common) exceeds 4, Chettri is going to count them as one single item when we calculate the winners.
  • You have until 11:59 PM, Sunday Jan 8, after which we’ll count up how many things each pair came up with.
  • The winners will receive a pair of old little drawstring pouches, which are revealed to be bottomless. They can fit any number of (nonliving) items inside of them, assuming what you put inside can fit through the 5” opening.
  • Edit: There will be a hidden RNG element during final selection.

The senior pairings are as follows:

Magdalen & Jeremiah
Irene & Anuhea
Cressida & Ivy
Nathaniel & Wesley
Leonardo & Ty
Tabitha & Jesse
Zoey & Isaiah Levi & Beatrix Theresa & Dahlia
Rafael & Wilhelmina Ravinder & Cecil Asher & Robin
Quinn & Penelope Henrietta & Christopher Laurel & Ryan
Diego & Marilyn*

* As the assignments are handed out, Mr. Chettri realizes the numbers have come up odd. Someone must be out sick. This doesn’t immediately worry him, as he figures he can sit with the spare student and do the activity with them. Mr. Chettri is imagining one of the shy, introverted students, or perhaps one of his Divination prodigies. That would be nice. But when he looks up from his papers to see who’s standing alone, he immediately recognizes Cecil’s extremely chatty best friend with the glasses, Diego Morales. Oh no. This is not happening. In desperation, Mr. Chettri grabs Marilyn, and before they know it they’ve joined Senior Bonding!

Bonding was bad enough without having to physically sit down and talk about himself. As soon as Mr Chettri explained the exercise, Ryan tried his hardest not to visibly react. There was probably a good amount of 'going pale', however. Although the one saving grace in this equation was getting paired with Laurel. Sure, she wasn't Zoey, but at least he knew her.

"So um. I'm sorry. I'm really a shit partner to get for this," Ryan decided diving right in was the best course of action. Hopefully Laurel wasn't really into winning. "Were you born in this country?" Maybe if they had an exotic thing in common they could work down to the mundane things.

"Psh!! Don't say that."

Laurel is kinda into this activity. She doesn't care much about winning, but it's still going to be fun maybe? Plus, Ryan's in her house and she thinks of him as a friend by default, so to her it feels like a happy experience with someone she likes.

"Yes! Okay. So -- one? Unless you weren't?" Laurel's eyebrows go up. "Do you like to read? Do you have siblings? Um!"

This icon is basically what Ryan's face looks like internally. He's hiding it well lol

Ryan can't help but smile at her reassurance, knowing she's not at all prepared for how awful he's going to be at this. At least it's someone he knows and therefore it won't be as awkward. Hopefully.

"No. No I wasn't just asking to see if it was something unique we shared?" He looks sheepish. "I was born in France," he explains apologetically. "But I do like to read. Although I'm an only child." Wow, did they really only have one thing so far? He was so pathetic.

"I know how to play hockey but I'm not super athletic. How about you?"

"What! Where in France?" Laurel's been on exactly one vacation in Europe, which means she'll totally know about the place.

"Okay okay. We have ... one. Oh! We're both blonde." She gestures semi-clumsily at both their heads, blue nails glinting. "And noooo. Not really athletic either? I mean -- dance? I like to dance. That's kinda athletic? Oh!! And I am in hockey. So that's like... Four?"

"Azurcrest seniors!" occurs to her after another second. "Oh my god. Duh."

"Versailles," he said, figuring if she'd ever been to France then she might have been here. Although he hadn't been back there since they'd moved, unfortunately, but that specific seemed more personal. "Have you ever been?"

Smiling at the blonde comment, he chuckles a bit. "Yes. Blondes have more fun." Now that they're both talking more, a few things come to mind which make it a bit easier to talk. "Four is definitely better than one," he says once they sort those out, nodding as if that is really good progress. "Azurcrest definitely counts, I don't care if it is really easy." Ryan wasn't giving any of these things up.

"I have an unhealthy obsession with coffee? And I can play an instrument?"

"Ohhhh okay. Cool! I saw Versaille a little when my parents took me and Ivy to Europe." She wants to ask more about this, but is easily distracted as Ryan continues.

"Coffee! I doooo like coffee. Can't play any instruments, though? I mean, kind of. What counts? Sometimes at LARP I play these tiny bells when I'm Celestine. But not super great."

Thinking. "We're both in Gaming? And we have classes in common."

Now they were getting somewhere. Despite his misgivings about his home life, any mention of where he's from brings a smile to his face. "That's cool. Where else did you go?" Ryan doesn't consider that he's inviting more questions about himself. He's just happy to talk to someone about it for a few moments.

A light laugh leaves his lips at her comment about the instruments, though it's obviously not a mocking or malicious one. "I mean, bells are still an instrument. I'm sure we can put it on there," he assures her. "Or at the very least we can just put 'likes music'."

"Yes, definitely. We need every little thing we can get, so they definitely get included." He taps a finger to his chin as he thinks. "How do you feel about croissants?"
