TREE DECORATING PARTY

TREE DECORATING PARTY

Bright and early in the morning, Outdoor Exploration and Equestrian Club have breakfast and pack up camp, so they can make it back in time for the annual Tree Decorating Party. Fir and pine trees are hitched to sleighs or the strongest horses, and the campers make good time through the forest, arriving back at school in the early afternoon.

At 6 PM, the whole school gathers in the huge, maze-like Gardens for the party. The winding paths have been swept free of snow, and the leafless trees and hedges have been dressed with magical lights. Dinner is set up on long tables in the courtyard at the center of the Gardens, and charmed lamps bathe the area with warmth, so students can enjoy an outdoor winter buffet featuring all kinds of holiday favourites. Vegan and kosher options are provided. Choir Club mounts the risers to sing carols for their classmates, and there's enthusiastic applause when Antonia Papadakis performs a stunning solo of Silent Night.

At 7 PM, tree decorating officially begins. The courtyard is the only safe area. At the north, east, south and west ends of the Gardens, four trees have been raised for the four houses. Scattered throughout the Gardens' maze-like paths are waterproof boxes containing various tree ornaments, and everyone is given the go-ahead to rush out and claim boxes for their house. Houses are allowed one hour to create the Best Christmas Tree in Gooseberry.

At 8 PM, the teachers will vote on a winning tree, and that house will be rewarded with bragging rights and a wizard cracker for every member of the house.

TREE DECORATING RULES
  1. Anything goes for tree decorations, so long as no one gets hurt. Over the years, the "anything goes" rule has translated into students staging raids to steal ornaments from rival houses, but you are no longer allowed to destroy anything, after the calamitous Tree Decorating Party of 2008. (Mr. Elmasry could tell you stories, but he's afraid of giving you ideas.)

  2. Prefects will be trusted to maintain order and judge what is or isn't an acceptable tree ornament. Staff is present in the courtyard, although ever since the disastrous Tree Decorating Party of 2010 when Ms. Rhee and Mr. Merrill got way too competitive, teachers are strictly forbidden from contributing or telling students what to do.

  3. Anything that makes sense as a Christmas tree decoration can plausibly be found in the supply boxes, e.g. magical lights, tinsel of every colour, ornaments shaped like corgi dogs. With caveats: there won't be any electricity, and the boxes were filled by the teachers, so you're not going to find NSFW things either. However...

  4. Students are permitted to bring or craft their own tree decorations. Please use your best judgment on what is actually practical for your character to bring to school with them.

  5. Magical ladders are provided to help people reach the topmost branches of the trees. What does magical mean? It means ladders which are magically less likely to let you fall and break your neck. Please, children, don't die.

  6. People who currently have detention will served it in the hours before dinner, so everyone can be present for Tree Decorating! The event isn't mandatory, but if you want an excuse for your character to take part, you can say their Head of House urged them to join.

  7. How is the winner calculated? When a participating character posts to their house's tree, a mod will RNG a score between 1–50 for each character. A house’s score is the total score of all their participating members, and the highest house score wins. You have until Monday, December 12 at 11:59 PM MT to post to your house's tree and have your character be counted.

» Dinner: Everyone gathers in the garden courtyard for a delicious feast and a performance by Choir.

» South Tree: Ebonhide

» West Tree: Ribbonfin

» North Tree: Azurcrest

» East Tree: Coppertale

» Gardens: The winding paths of the Gardens create a maze, and boxes of Christmas ornaments have been hidden all over.

» Courtyard: In the center of the Gardens is the courtyard. During Tree Decorating, this is the only safe zone, i.e. no one can throw snowballs at you or steal your ornaments.

» OOC - Questions, comments, concerns!

OH MY GOD, as if Mina is going to allow Ebonhide to be upstaged in a decorating competition. As if ANY of the senior Ebonhide ladies are going to be upstaged when it comes to decorating. Mina brings to the table years of bossing people around in Event Committee for holiday events.

Unfortunately, this also means Mina is going to be try to boss Ebonhides around when they decorate their tree instead of, you know, focusing on just putting shit on the tree. BUT COME ON. DO NONE OF YOU HAVE A SENSE OF VISUAL BALANCE OR COLOUR COORDINATION.

Casper doesn't like to be pushed around and any order that Mina attempts to give him will be met with a dismissive bitch, please look. If she pushes, he'll push back. She's probably better off just leaving him alone.

Casper Kim, shockingly, isn't big on decorating Christmas trees. He'll hang around, but devotes most of his energy to finding (and fighting for) ornaments and scoping out the area around the Ebonhide tree with his eyes open for saboteurs. He doesn't really care about winning this competition, but the idea of Coppertales or Azurcrests slipping in here just to be assholes and mess things up...irritates him. He'll try to take them down.

Clementine sticks around for the first 10 minutes to try to help decorate the tree but quickly finds that there is an OVERABUNDANCE of strong personalities already jockeying to be on point in the process. After severely over-decorating a square foot of the Ebonhide tree, she wanders off to try to mess with the other houses' trees.

Vee is ALL ABOUT decorating. She does have a good eye, she can govern herself and get things done, giving out direction if people need help but also good at taking it too (if Mina asks for something)

She will be propositioning people to lift her, or let her sit on their shoulders, where needed. So feel free to take the fall on that one ;) (Stacking her squad is not out of the realm of possibility though)

2016-12-10 08:21 pm UTC (link)
Secret; of all the many competitions in the year, this is possibly the one Leo is most content sitting back and letting others lead them to victory. He will still trash talk everyone because that's how he was born, but he is not a creator of pretty things. And he's pretty sure no other tree site would let him within reach of any of their decorations because they know him. So INSTEAD, he probably spends the time helping Casper guard the decorations and helping decorate when the actual artistic minds here ask. He will also coach freshmen and less suspicious looking sophomores into finding the weak spots in the other trees' security.

He will also flirt with Rafael and catch him stealing tinsel. That's important.

Pine tree decorating was not something Kele's family ever did, they celebrated Makahiki over other winter holidays. He watched the others go all-in in their competition. While keeping with the direction the girls seemed to want to go, Kele brought out a few things that added a personal touch for him, to represent the diversity.

Kele adds paper flowers he had cut to look like flowers from Hawaii and small couch shell ornaments scattered throughout their tree.

Cameron takes a run through the maze, to see if he can snag any boxes of ornaments that are hidden up high, but he's a lover not a fighter, so he doesn't stick with this intense undertaking for long.

He makes exactly one ornament (but with his own photo, of course - the only "craft" supply he brought).

Then, being the giant he is, he goes where he is truly needed - helping to decorate the tree. If you put him on the ladder, he can nearly touch the moon.

Magdalen doesn't need to fuss with the maze. She's been pumping out her own Christmas decorations and has taken a few from her personal mini-tree (okay, lbr, she probably shares it with Cricket and they probably have two) in her cabin.

(Sorry, super scatterbrained tonight but I wanted to get this in. I'll prob write a better description after the roll.)

Cricket the Crybaby
[info]cricketq
2016-12-11 03:57 am UTC (link)
This is Cricket's favorite Gooseberry event, by far, and she prepares for it all year. Each year she picks a new theme and, this year, it's a sort of Farewell to Gooseberry. She arrives with a large, neatly packed box of handmade ornaments, similar to this. Except, instead of stationary little dolls, inside each snowglobe is a different 3D moving scene (sort of like a hologram). They're all charmed from magical pictures of Gooseberry students and staff that Cricket has collected over the years. Students from every house are represented, though most globes feature Ebonhide upperclassmen (she had to work with the pictures she had)! Feel free to comment what your character's lil snowglobe might have contained. (Y'know, because they're essentially gifs). I know there is DEFINITELY one of Mina cuddling Pancake.

She worked really hard on these and they're extremely sentimental artifacts, so when the Ebonhide tree catches fire, gets doused with water, and dumps a bunch of her ornaments onto the ground (shattering them into a million little pieces), Cricket starts to tear up. She tries to brush it off and regroup, but it's a lost cause. Her chin is trembling and her breathing is shaky by the time she makes a hasty exit out into the maze to hide and collect herself.

Bailey stole a lot of the decorations that she brought back, mostly by throwing things so that the bushes on the opposite side from where she was began to ruffle and then, when the people she was stealing from looked that way or came closer to her to avoid imaginary her, ambushing them with tickles until they dropped their decoration and she could run.

So basically, she came back with leaves in her hair, panting, and carrying a decoration about 30% of the time. Mostly it was tinsel, but at one point she got a few gold baubles. She also personally had candy canes to put on the tree, in various flavors.

Antonia.
[info]pageantry
2016-12-12 10:31 pm UTC (link)
Antonia was HORRIFIED when the tree caught fire but also super grateful that at that point she had only been monitoring and following the lead of other people who wanted help decorating. Since it seemed they would have to start over is when Antonia pulled out her case of ornaments that she had been working on. Unfortunately no one else could help her put said ornaments on the tree because they were all charmed to BITE and CLAW anyone who wasn't Antonia when touched.

All of the ornaments were bears that had something about them that represented each of the students. Sometimes they were subtle things that people would have to guess. Other things were much more obvious. When they weren't being touched, they were engaging in activities. Some of the bears were reading, some of the bears were chasing each other, some of the bears were dancing, and so on.

Other ornaments she made said BERRY CHRISTMAS and those could be stolen, though she doesn't know why anyone would want to. EVERYONE in Ebonhide was warned not to touch the bears unless they asked Antonia first to which she would alter the charm that she put them. Anyone who didn't asked had to have her remove the bear or see a staff member. Who likely came to hunt Antonia down because it's her handy charm work.
