Carter had been bouncing off the walls since Madison had given him the finished CGI for The Forever Tale. All he had to do was put in the fancy transitions and sync the sound up and he'd have his polished copy done. After hours of just watching it over and over again and making a minor change here and there with the timing, he finally had it done. In his hand was the fine cut of his movie. All he had to do was figure out what he wanted to do with the credits, make them fancy or simple, maybe have his sketches appear in the background or have bloopers...whatever...he'd figure it out later.
With the copy in his hand he made his way over to Madison's. He knew she'd appreciate it and he did owe her a giant hug for all her work. Carter rang the doorbell and waited. After ringing it a few more times and no answer he realized he probably should have called before coming over. Normally Carter would have left or pulled out his phone to shoot her a text, but he was just that excited. He tried the door and was pleasantly surprised that it opened. Maybe she was home and just wrapped up in her testing or a video game?
"Ms. Moriarty?" He called out...no answer. She must have just stepped out. He knew he couldn't wait for her, he had homework to do. So he decided that he'd just leave the copy somewhere where she'd see it. Her desk was probably the best decision and he made his way into her office. Leaving a note would be good too so he grabbed a pen and looked around for a piece of paper. There was a stack of post-it notes next to her file cabinet.
Carter grabbed for the notes and he doesn't know what made him do it, must have been divine intervention, but he glanced over at the open drawer in her cabinet. He turned away and was about to write his note when he stopped. Something he had seen. Now invading privacy like this wasn't normal for Carter but...he had to be sure...it couldn't be what he thought it was. He reached in and pulled out a few photos. All of them were of his parents. From the same night as the picture he had. All different angles, them laughing hugging, and one that stuck out to him was the first time he got a good look of his mom's face. Not weird angle or hat blocking it. A full straight on image. And she looked...well beautiful...but also....familiar. He glanced back to the desk and saw a picture of Madison with Mr. Turner. It clicked and he felt all color leave his face. It wasn't possible...it couldn't be...no...she wouldn't do this...she wouldn't lie to him like this....all this time...getting close to him...she wouldn't...be lying the whole time. Carter started to hyperventilate at the realization and fumbled for his inhaler. He tried to take in a few puffs of the inhaler which was a feat all it's own with his hands trembling like they were. His breathing returned to normal. No, he was just over reacting. His mom and Madison probably just closely resembled each other or he was projecting his mother onto Madison. She was the kind of person he'd want for a mother. But...why did Madison have these photos to begin with? Did she know his mother? Was that why she became friends with him, she felt guilty for what her friend did? Maybe Madison was the one who took those photos all those years ago?
Carter shook his head, he'd ask her about it later. He went to put the photos back and pushed some papers back to fit them in. He was about to pull back when the paper he pushed back caught his eye. That sense of dread filled him again. He pulled it out and started to read it. He knew the handwriting immediately...it was his grandmother's. It was a letter to his mother he unfolded the letter completely not really able to read the letter anymore and a picture of fell out. It was a photo of him. It was his school photo from his freshman year. He clenched the letter in his hand as tears started to pour. He couldn't deny it anymore, the proof was right there in front of him. Forgetting about leaving a note forgetting about his movie all together Carter raced out of her house. He didn't bother to close the door or anything. He couldn't think he just ran and ran and ran. Carter only stopped when he found himself at the beach. Collapsing to his knees he buried his fingers in the sand as he sobbed. It was true...all of it...all this time she had lied to him...the cool adult who he had trusted more than anything had been lying to him all this time...Madison...Madison Moriarty was really Gloria Manning. Madison...was his mother.
